Harry Potter fans divided over first look at Nick Frost as Hagrid in TV reboot

Daily Mirror3 days ago
The first look at Nick Frost as Hagrid in the new Harry Potter TV series has been released as filming gets under way - with the actor sporting the gamekeeper's trademark wild hair and beard
The first glimpse of actor Nick Frost embodying the character Hagrid has been unveiled as filming commences for the new Harry Potter television series. However, not everyone is convinced with the new look.

The HBO adaptation of the beloved fantasy novels is currently being shot at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden in Watford, Hertfordshire. On Tuesday, the organisation shared a snapshot of Frost in full Rubeus Hagrid attire, complete with a wild, wavy brown mane and beard. He's seen sporting a long, dark green coat, with a hint of a striped green shirt peeking out from underneath.

Frost, renowned for his roles in British comedy films Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead, will be stepping into the shoes of the affable groundskeeper, a role previously brought to life by the late Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane in the film adaptations.

But not all fans online were buying the appearance. While some gushed they were "loving" the release, others said his costume looked like 'cosplaying'.
Taking to Twitter /X, one user questioned: "Who exactly asked for this?'. And another said: "Love Nick Frost, but no chance of out-Hagrid-ing Hagrid.'

A third added: "I'm so sorry this already looks like a parody show." But it wasn't all negative, with another saying: "Ok this does earn you an up from me. I am so pleased how Nick Frost looks as Hagrid. Think he's going to be my favourite."
The latest reveal follows HBO's announcement that young actor Rory Wilmot will portray Harry's schoolmate Neville Longbottom, while Amos Kitson has been cast as his cousin Dudley Dursley. In addition, Sherlock actress Louise Brealey will take on the role of Hogwarts Quidditch coach Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Game Of Thrones star Anton Lesser will portray wandmaker Garrick Ollivander.
Other notable cast members include award-winning American actor John Lithgow as Hogwarts headmaster Professor Albus Dumbledore, Welsh comedian and actor Paul Whitehouse as caretaker Argus Filch, and Rivals actress Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley.

Each season of the show promises to faithfully adapt the Harry Potter books, under the guidance of author and executive producer JK Rowling. The series comes after the successful film adaptations featuring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the lead roles.
In addition to the new cast, HBO has also confirmed several new department heads for the series, including Director of Photography Adriano Goldman, Hair and Makeup Designer Cate Hall, Stunt Coordinator Paul Herbert and SFX Supervisor Mark Holt.
Mara LePere-Schloop has joined as Production Designer, Naomi Moore is Set Decorator, John Nolan is handling Creature Effects, Alexis Wajsbrot is VFX Supervisor with Dom Sidoli as VFX Producer. They're joining the previously announced Holly Waddington as the series' costume designer, while the series will be written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner.
The show is slated to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2027.

Over a thousand flock to Swingathon as village hosts UK's biggest taboo festival

The annual three-day 'Swingathon' event in Allington, Lincolnshire is going ahead despite local concerns about the quiet village becoming the 'swingers capital of England' Thousands of people are set to descend on a sleepy British village this weekend - but they won't be there to enjoy the charms of country life. ‌ The annual ' Swingathon ' event got underway in the village of Allington, near Grantham, Lincolnshire last night, attracting people from across the country for a three-day celebration of non-monogamous relationships. Its organisers insist that the weekend is not a ' sex festival' but instead an 'adult alternative lifestyle event', offering an array of adult-themed entertainment including play tents, pole dancing performances, hot tubs, foam parties, mobile dungeons, and games. The estimated 1,000 attendees - who have the option of camping or paying extra for a glamping spot - are charged £210 each if arriving on their own, or £250 total as a couple. ‌ ‌ But not everyone will be welcoming the hordes of swingers with open arms, as residents of Allington, a village with a population of just 7,900, have repeatedly voiced their grievances about noise and disruption caused by the event. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told Lincolnshire Live: "We're becoming known as the swinger's capital of England just because of this festival and that's not a title we want. Its mostly elderly people and families here so you can imagine them spitting their tea out when they learned we were to be the home of Swingathon. "It's usually the talk of the village, some say let consenting adults do whatever they want to do, but I know many are not pleased they have chosen here for such activities. It's just a bit seedy and sleazy isn't it? Not for me I'm afraid." ‌ To deal with the local concerns, for its fifth year the festival has moved to a more secluded spot to accommodate its growing popularity, and to head off any noise complaints. Organisers are keen to dispel some of negative perceptions about what goes on at the event, and Matthew Cole, organiser of Swingathon, said: "Contrary to some beliefs, there are no keys in bowls, seedy music, lecherous individuals or a high level of STIs amongst this community. ‌ "In fact, individuals within this community are respectful, conscientious, and more likely to practise safe sex or be regularly tested than the average person you might meet on a night out in a club. "The team are passionate about normalising the sexual freedom that alternative lifestyles provide and continue to strive against prejudice and adversity to bring the community a safe and inclusive social, play and learning space." Festivalgoers have already flocked to social media to share pictures and clips of their experiences, with many looking like they're camping at any other festival, grilling bacon after a busy first night. Others have posted pictures and videos in their outfits, some of which leave little to the imagination. Other posts from vendors show off their wares for sale, including many intended for the bedroom. In a question and answer on their social media, Swingathon explained that there is a "good mix of couples, single male and females". They add that: "Every single person is checked and verified and has provided ID to ensure the safety of all festivalgoers."

Stephen Colbert's The Late Show cancelled after 8 years as fans fume at decision

The popular US late night talk show host previously comically "backed" Scottish independence in one of his 2014 skits The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will disappear from TV screens in a year's time after being cancelled. Stephen rose to fame presenting the satirical news show The Colbert Report on Comedy Central from 2005 until 2014. ‌ He succeeded David Letterman as presenter of The Late Show on CBS, a subsidiary of Paramount Global. On July 17, CBS announced that The Late Show will end its " historic run" in May 2026 at the end of the broadcast season. ‌ "We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire the 'THE LATE SHOW' franchise at that time," a CBS spokesperson said. ‌ "We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late-night television." The broadcaster explained the reasoning behind the move, stating: "This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. ‌ "It is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount." Colbert himself delivered the news to his viewers during Thursday's programme, announcing: "Before we start the show, I want to let you know something I found out just last night. Next year will be our last season. "The network will be ending 'The Late Show' in May." ‌ Supporters flocked to social media to voice their outrage over the programme's axing. "I'm absolutely not ready to NOT have Stephen Colbert on my TV at night," one fumed on X, previously Twitter, while another said: "CBS letting Stephen Colbert go is BS! Boycott CBS," reports the Mirror. Back in 2014, Colbert comically backed Scottish independence and even played out the famous scene from Braveheart of Mel Gibson on his programme - with a minor edit to the dialogue. ‌ "Folks, any time people are angrily demanding something and I don't entirely understand why, I am with them," Colbert said in a night segment on The Colbert Report. "I stand with my secessionist brothers... Today, I, Stephen Colbert, am a proud Scotsman. Ich bin ein Edinburgher." ‌ He added: "They may take our lives, but they will never take our freedom to calculate pension benefits, rates of inflation or earnings. Whichever is higher." Multiple viewers have speculated that the programme's termination could be connected to the broadcaster's recent legal agreement with President Trump, considering Stephen's vocal condemnation of the President. Paramount Global is presently combining with Skydance Media, a transaction that needs approval from the Federal Communications Commission. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! "Just days after Paramount announces it settles the lawsuit Trump brought against them, they announce they are cancelling Stephen Colbert. Can't help but think the cancelling of Stephen Colbert's show was part of the settlement that Paramount agreed to. It's so obvious," one viewer remarked. Another expressed their unease: "I'm not going to pretend that Stephen Colbert is perfect or anything, but it really does not sit right with me that this news comes just after Paramount settled with Trump and in the midst of merging with Skydance Media. This just feels like textbook censorship, plain and simple."

Holly Hagan blasts Geordie Shore and shares show regret 15 years after debut

The reality star has opened up about her regrets, years on from her MTV days, and how she thinks the show's creators could have taken better care of her on set at just 18 years old Holly Hagan was just 18 years old when she first joined the cast of Geordie Shore on MTV, and after her recent lifestyle changes and transformation, she has reflected on what she thinks could have been done differently. ‌ This week the TV star turned influencer took to Instagram to answer questions from her fans and got pretty candid with her millions of followers. Now 33 years old, Holly admits that at the time, she was "very young and naive" when first starring in the show. ‌ It was 2011 when she first appeared on our screens in what was the British version of the American hit show Jersey Shore before leaving in 2016. The MTW series was notorious for being rather messy, as it followed the daily life of youngsters living in Newcastle, partying, sleeping together and having plenty of fun. ‌ One follower asked Holly: "Do you have any regrets from Geordie Shore?" to which she responded in an open and honest Instagram story. She said: "I do regret the first night and wish someone had stepped in to stop the lads egging me on to keep downing shots." The reality star went on to explain: "I'd never even drank a Jägerbomb before that. Of course, I had my own mind and take responsibility for that, but I was very young and naive at 18 and probably could have done with some duty of care/welfare in that moment." ‌ In light of opening up to her followers, Holly answered another fan question, but this time about her family plans. Since 2022 she has been happily married to her footballer husband Jacob Blyth, with whom she shares a son, Alpha-Jax. Candid as ever, Holly shared that she had plans to expand her family with more children this year but revealed the tragic news that she suffered a miscarriage. She added: "And just because 90% of the questions are about when we're having another, and I do get constant comments like 'AJ needs a sibling', and I'm like, I KNOWW!!" Holly added that she did want to speak about it at the time of the loss but wasn't sure how to and that she didn't "want any sympathy". She added: "Just a reminder to be mindful when commenting, saying, 'When's the next?' Because how on earth would we know that?" After years of chaos on our screens, Holly found her happily ever after with her husband, whom she met back in 2017, a year after her Geordie Shore departure. The couple got engaged in 2019 during a special trip to Ibiza and tied the knot in a ceremony that featured on MTV three years ago, the very channel that helped to launch her career.
