Virginia man sentenced to 30 years in ISIS crypto scheme
Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, 36, collected and sent money to female ISIS members between 2019 and 2022 to help finance their escape from prison camps, and also to fund ISIS fighters, the Justice Department said in a statement.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said Chhipa's sentencing is evidence of the United States' effort to prosecute those who support terrorist groups.
Court documents show that Chhipa would raise money in various ways, including by using social media accounts to raise at least $185,000 to fund his operation.
"He would receive electronic transfers of funds and travel hundreds of miles to collect funds by hand," the Justice Department release said. "He would then convert the money to cryptocurrency and send it to Turkey, where it was smuggled to ISIS members in Syria."
The Justice Department said Chhipa's primary co-conspirator was a Syria-based ISIS member who also raised financing for prison escapes, terror attacks and ISIS fighters.
A federal jury in December 2024, convicted Chhipa of one count of conspiracy to provide material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization and four counts of providing and attempting to provide material support or resources to a foreign terrorist organization.
The FBI Field Office in Washington investigated the case.

The report, commissioned by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the Secret Service received tips on the attempted assassination at least 10 days prior to the incident in Butler County, Penn., "but failed to relay the information to federal and local law enforcement personnel responsible for securing and staffing the event," a report released by the Senate Judiciary Committee said. The report said the Secret Service had no process in place to share the information. "As an important step, I allocated $1.17 billion in the One Big Beautiful Bill to provide the Secret Service with additional funding," Grassley said in a release regarding the report. "I'm hopeful this significant injection of resources will go a long way in bringing the agency up to speed." Former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheadle had said there was no information made available leading up to the attack one year ago, but Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said that was not true. "She did not tell the truth," Paul said during an appearance on the NBC News program Face the Nation. "She said there were no assets that were requested in advance. We found at least four occasions, actually, maybe five occasions, where requests were made. The primary request that was made by both Trump's Secret Service detail, as well as his campaign was for counter-snipers." Paul contended that there was "plenty of time to take him off the stage" based on the information that was available. He said a report of a suspicious person with a range-finder equipped weapon turned out to be the shooter who made the attempt on Trump's life. The GAO report said the site agent responsible for identifying vulnerabilities was new to her job and that the Butler County rally was the first time she had planned and secured a large, outdoor event.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk blasted President Trump on Saturday over his defense of Attorney General Pam Bondi and her handling of the case related to the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. Musk, in a late Saturday post on the social platform X, which he owns, responded to another X user who had attached a screenshot of Trump's Truth Social statement earlier that day and wrote, 'This is in the running for worst post ever made.' 'Seriously,' Musk said, agreeing with that sentiment about Trump's post. 'He said 'Epstein' half a dozen times while telling everyone to stop talking about Epstein.' Justice Dept fires more prosecutors support staff involved in Trump prosecutions AP sources say
Washington, Jul 13 (AP) The Justice Department has fired additional lawyers and support staff who worked on special counsel Jack Smith's prosecutions of President Donald Trump, according to two people familiar with the matter. The overall number of terminations was not immediately clear but they cut across both the classified documents and election interference prosecutions brought by Smith, and included a handful of prosecutors who were detailed to the probe as well as Justice Department support staff and other non-lawyer personnel who aided them, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss personnel moves that have not been publicly announced. The firings are part of a broader wave of terminations that have roiled the department for months and that have targeted staff who worked on cases involving Trump and his supporters. In January, the Justice Department said that it had fired more than a dozen prosecutors who worked on prosecutions of Trump, and last month fired at least three prosecutors involved in US Capitol riot criminal cases, Smith's team in 2023 brought separate indictments accusing Trump of hoarding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida as well as conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the run-up to the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol. Neither case reached trial. The Supreme Court significantly narrowed the election interference case in a ruling that said former presidents were immune from prosecution for official acts, and a Trump-appointed judge dismissed the classified documents case by holding that Smith's appointment as special counsel was illegal. Smith ultimately withdrew both cases in November 2024 after Trump's victory, citing a Justice Department legal opinion that protects sitting presidents from federal prosecution.
