Wrigley Field chosen to host 2027 All-Star Game. Manfred downplays spat with Phillies' Harper
Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred made it official, announcing during a news conference Friday at home plate that the 2027 All-Star Game will be held at Wrigley Field.
Baseball's second-oldest ballpark hasn't hosted an All-Star Game since 1990. Chicago Cubs great Ryne Sandberg — who died Monday of cancer — won the Home Run Derby that year. Wrigley also hosted All-Star Games in 1947 and 1962.
Manfred, who was joined by Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, cited the 'amazing transformation' of the ballpark and surrounding streets in the past decade as part of a massive renovation by the Ricketts family.
The Cubs first approached the league about hosting an All-Star Game eight years ago. But for a variety of reasons, including competition from other cities and safety concerns with the ballpark in a bustling neighborhood, they weren't awarded one until now. Chicago cleared a big hurdle in June, when the city passed an ordinance allowing sidewalks along Addison Street to be widened and removable bollards to be installed around the ballpark.
'I think we're probably overdue in terms of being at Wrigley,' Manfred said. 'The Ricketts family, city of Chicago and state of Illinois made a tremendous investment not just in the ballpark but the area around it. I think it'll be a fantastic venue for our All-Star celebration.'
Wrigley Field is set to join Cleveland's Municipal Stadium and the old Yankee Stadium as the only ballparks to host four All-Star Games. The city of Chicago will host the event for the eighth time, second only to New York with nine.
Pritzker, a Cubs fan, called Wrigley Field 'the perfect place to host the All-Star Game.'
'For over 100 years, this has been the beating heart of the baseball world and a shining emblem of our nation's favorite pastime,' he said. 'There's no place like it.'
Ricketts lived in the neighborhood the last time the Cubs hosted the All-Star Game. But he wasn't able to attend.
'I didn't have dough,' he said.
Ricketts figures to have an up-close view this time, assuming the game is played as scheduled. There is some doubt with baseball's collective bargaining agreement set to expire following the 2026 season, though Manfred expressed confidence the owners and players will avoid a lengthy work stoppage.
Asked about a potential contingency plan if there is a strike or lockout, he said: 'My contingency plan is to make an agreement with the players and play the 2027 season.'

Manfred and Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper had a spirited exchange last week during a question-and-answer session between the commissioner and the team. In that meeting, Manfred spoke about the media landscape and working together to grow the sport, according to a person with knowledge of the conversation. At some point, Harper told Manfred if he was there to talk about a salary cap, he could 'get the (expletive) out' of the clubhouse.
'I think more has been made out of this than needs to be made out of it,' Manfred said Friday. 'Bryce expressed his views. At the end of the meeting, we shook hands and went our separate ways. Not all that significant.'
Philadelphia hosts the 2026 All-Star Game.

Jorge Costa, Champions League winning captain of Porto, dies at 53
PORTO, Portugal (AP) — Jorge Costa, who captained Porto to the 2004 Champions League title, died Tuesday of cardiac arrest, the club said. He was 53. Costa, a central defender who made 50 international appearances for Portugal, was Porto's director of football at the time of his death. A year earlier, he lifted the second-tier UEFA Cup. Costa also helped Porto win eight Portuguese league titles. He spent a short period on loan at English team Charlton in the 2001-02 season. 'To hear of a life taken at 53 is never nice to hear, but he's a former teammate who had such a great standing in the game and captained a Champions League winning side,' said Steve Brown, chair of Charlton's ex-players' association. Teddy Bridgewater set to return to the NFL with the Buccaneers to back up Baker Mayfield
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Teddy Bridgewater is nearing a return to the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said Bridgewater is visiting the team and the Bucs plan to sign him. The Buccaneers will be the eighth team in 12 seasons for the 32-year-old Bridgewater. Bridgewater coached his former high school in Miami to a Class 3A state championship last fall and then returned to the NFL in late December to serve as a backup to Jared Goff for the playoff-bound Lions. He would provide insurance for the four-time defending NFC South champions behind Baker Mayfield. The Buccaneers also have veteran Kyle Trask, who has thrown 11 passes in four seasons since he was a second-round pick in 2021. Mayfield returned to practice Tuesday after missing a couple of days because of a hand contusion. Bridgewater said last month that he was suspended from coaching Miami Northwestern High School because he provided players with financial benefits that he says he reported to the school. 'I'm not going anywhere,' Bridgewater said on social media post. 'And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.' Bridgewater, a first-round pick by Minnesota in 2014, is 33-32 as a starter and made the Pro Bowl after his second season when he led the Vikings to an 11-5 record. He also spent time with the Jets, Saints, Panthers, Broncos and Dolphins. Bridgewater has completed 66.4% of his passes for 15,120 yards, 75 touchdowns, 47 interceptions and a 90.5 passer rating. Jets' Mason Taylor out at least a week with high ankle sprain; Tyrod Taylor dealing with knee injury
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets rookie tight end Mason Taylor has a high ankle sprain that will keep him sidelined for at least a week. Taylor, a second-round pick out of LSU, had been one of the bright spots on offense for the Jets during the first few weeks of training camp. The son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor didn't practice Monday or Tuesday after a day off Sunday. High ankle sprains often take several weeks to heal. But Coach Aaron Glenn, who announced the nature of the injury after practice Tuesday, doesn't believe Taylor's progress will be hampered by missing some practice time this summer. 'He's a damn good player,' Glenn said. 'He has the pedigree of being an NFL player because of his dad. I think he's going to be just fine. I'm not worried about that player at all.' Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor has a knee injury that is being evaluated. The 36-year-old Taylor is expected to back up starter Justin Fields this season. 'Listen, we all know he's an older player and obviously when you get to that point, there's some wear and tear,' Glenn said. 'So we wanted to make sure we get it taken care of so he can be ready for us when the season starts.' Glenn added that the knee issue isn't expected to keep Taylor sidelined for long. 'I don't see it as a long-term (thing),' the coach said. 'But I don't want to just stamp that right now, but I am sure it is not.' It was a busy day for the trainers, who had to handle a few other injuries at practice as the Jets prepare for their preseason opener at Green Bay on Saturday. Defensive tackle Byron Cowart injured an ankle during individual drills and rode the cart in the passenger seat from the field into the facility. Rookie cornerback Azareye'h Thomas injured his right shoulder when he fell on it while trying to break up a pass.
