Unveiling of Lemmy statue in Burslem was sea of love

BBC News12-05-2025
The sculptor who created the statue of heavy metal legend Lemmy Kilmister has praised the hundreds of fans who turned out for its unveiling, describing the crowd as a "sea of love".The 2.25m bronze-cast statue of the Motörhead frontman was uncovered in the singer's hometown of Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, during a ceremony on Friday. The memorial, which stands on a plinth on Market Place, was designed by Andy Edwards to commemorate 10 years since the rocker's death and 50 years since the band was formed. The local artist told BBC Radio Stoke the event had a "festival vibe" but was more intimate.
"It was just a sea of love. The atmosphere was great... everybody was lovely," he said.As well as guest speakers, including Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell, the ceremony also saw a procession of motorbikes arrive with a portion of Lemmy's ashes, which were placed in the statue.
Edwards, whose previous work includes a famous Beatles statue at Pier Head in Liverpool, said he was thinking of organising another event in Burslem in July to mark Motörhead's 50th anniversary."We need this statue in our area, we need something to bring people together and to show what kind of people we actually are," he added."I don't think it [the ceremony] can be topped, which is why we're thinking of doing it again."
Bloodstock festival organiser Vicky Hungerford, who was friends with Lemmy, said she has been "on a high" since attending the event."You had to be there to appreciate how incredible the feeling, the vibe and the day was," she said.Lemmy, real name Ian Fraser Kilmister, was born in Burslem in 1945 and later lived in nearby Newcastle-under-Lyme and Madeley. He joined Hawkwind as a bassist and vocalist in 1971 before forming Motörhead four years later. The band went on to release 23 studio albums in a career spanning 40 years until Lemmy's death on 28 December 2015, which came after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Inside Mel B's 'spiritual' second wedding to Rory McPhee in Morocco with non-traditional dress - but which Spice Girl was in attendance?

Mel B shunned tradition as she tied the knot with husband Rory McPhee in 'spiritual' second wedding in Morocco over the weekend. The couple previously walked down the aisle in London's St Paul's Cathedral last month, followed by an evening reception at the Shangri-La hotel at The Shard. But while their first celebration was the picture of tradition with the Spice Girl donning a pearl-adorned white gown and arriving in a classic Bentley, this time around, the multi-day occasion was a much more glamorous affair that paid homage to Mel's individual style. Meanwhile, the guest list saw one person that couldn't make the London do in attendance - non other than Mel's fellow Spice Girl Melanie C, with the star being the only Spice Girl to make it. The second wedding celebration saw one notable difference in the form of Mel's dress, with the singer ditching her conventional white gown for a sparkly red strapless number with a thigh-high split. As with her Josephine Scott-designed gown, Mel was guided in her choice of outfit by wedding dress guru Caroline Black from London-based Evelie Bridal, who helped her choose the perfect dress to celebrate her and Rory's day. Just as Josephine Scott's dress proudly reflected her British roots, Mel and Caroline chose Justin Alexander, a US-based designer, to reflect her life in America where she is currently a judge on America's Got Talent. Caroline said of the dress: 'For Mel's Morocco wedding dress, we focused on trying Justin Alexander gowns with a little extra sparkle. Mel loved the idea of a red dress—something bold, with lots and lots of shimmer—but it also had to feel light and easy to move in. 'We drew inspiration from a variety of dresses she tried on at Evelie South Kensington, then went back and forth brainstorming with Justin Alexander and his design team. After several conversations and sketches, the first design took shape. Mel gave us clear feedback on what she liked and what she didn't, and the final result was beautiful. 'Mel had such a strong sense of what she wanted—it was a joy working with her and Justin Alexander to bring her vision to life.' The silhouette was entirely hand-beaded with rich red crystals and bugle beads, creating a mesmerizing floating effect across the illusion bodice and skirt, with the whole thing taking over 850 hours to complete by a team of six artisans. Mel completed her look with a Moroccan-inspired cathedral veil, custom-draped in mocha tulle and accented with red crystals to mirror the gown's embellishments. Meanwhile Rory, who wore traditional McPhee tartan and kilt at the London ceremony, flew the flag for UK designers with a twist on the traditional black tie, wearing an outfit by Alexander McQueen. Elsewhere, while her London nuptials was a one-day event which ended with a surprisingly low-key after party, her latest wedding was a three-day extravaganza held at the Selman Marrakech hotel. Only Emma attended the big day at St Paul's Cathedral last month- where she looked incredible in a baby pink mini dress and hat Daily Mail understands that the event, which was held from August 1-3 saw the couple and their guests enjoy the outdoor spiritual ceremony as well as dinner and a wedding brunch. The Moroccan celebrations were said to have had a vibrant, fiery them to reflect Scary Spice's style. Mel's sister Danielle Brown shared a glimpse of the table settings on her Instagram, with the label adorned with Morrocan lanterns, laser cut paper place settings and ornate crockery and cutlery. Elsewhere, while she sent her apologies the first time around, Mel C ensured she flew out to Morocco to support her pal for her big day. While she didn't post any snaps on her own social media, she didn't comment on Mel B's Instagram post, writing: 'What a weekend! So happy we got to share it with you [three heart emojis].' At the London ceremony, Emma Bunton was the only Spice Girl to make an appearance, with Mel C and Victoria Beckham quick to offer up their apologies and paying tribute to Mel on social media. Meanwhile, Geri Halliwell-Horner has remained tight-lipped on the matter amid reports differences between the pair. It was thought the Spice Girls could be set for a reunion at the Moroccan celebrations, with Geri given the chance to extend an olive branch to Mel if she attended the North African ceremony, however it wasn't meant to be. Morocco hold significance for the girl band after they jetted there for a mini reunion a decade ago to celebrate David Beckham 's 40th birthday. However ironically Mel B was the only member not in attendance as instead, Eva Longoria filled in for Scary - joking 'I'm the new Spice Girl! #LatinaSpice'.

Cafe owner 'felt sick' after The Salt Path author 'falsely portrayed her mother as a bully' in best-selling book

A cafe owner has claimed she 'felt sick' after discovering The Salt Path author Raynor Winn had depicted her mother as a bully in the hit memoir. Joanna Cocking, 51, said that while the Porthmellin cafe - run by her mother - was not mentioned by name in the book, there is only one cafe in Mullion Cove. The 2018 memoir, which has been turned into a film, was presented by Winn as a true story about her life, but is under intense scrutiny amid claims of omissions and exaggerations. Upon reading a portrayal of her family business in the book, Ms Cocking told The Observer: 'When I got sent the bit of the book that we were in, I just felt sick. I just wanted to write to the publisher and say: ''You can't write this.''' She added that at first she thought it must be some sort of mistake, but concluded the extract must be about her mother due to no other cafes existing in the area. In her memoir, Winn described how after losing their home, she and her husband 'Moth' - real name Timothy - walked the 630-mile South West Coast Path. En route, the couple stopped off at the cafe on the Lizard peninsula. 'A man in his twenties waited tables, cleared tables, politely dealt with grumpy customers, cut cakes, swept the floor,' Winn wrote. She then described the arrival of the angry owner. 'What the f*** do you think you're doing? There's two tables out there uncleared. What do I pay you for? You're f****** lazy.' According to the memoir, the waiter handed the couple two free paninis before deciding he was quitting. In response to the extract, Ms Cocking said: 'When I read that, I was thinking: ''That can't be us.'' I was absolutely mortified. She never named the cafe but she might as well have because there is only one cafe in this cove.' The cafe owner, who took over from her mother, claimed the fact that there is a cafe in Mullion Cove is the only part of the passage that is accurate. She added that nobody could have swept the floor because there has been carpet for years, and that her mother was a 'typical old Cornish woman' who would never speak like that. Ms Cocking also claimed that while there has been a few male waiting staff working at the cafe over the years, nobody has ever walked out. Additionally, the business has allegedly never sold paninis. Via her lawyers, Winn told The Observer: 'The Salt Path is an honest account of what we lived through on the path, and I stand by it.' Penguin Michael Joseph, the memoir's publisher, called Winn's best-selling book 'unflinchingly honest' - but parts of the tale have been scrutinised after claims of dishonesty emerged. While the author painted herself as a victim dealing with homelessness and the critical health of her husband, she has since accepted she 'made mistakes' after being accused of stealing from her former employer. Previously, a widow who claimed Winn stole thousands of pounds from her family business claimed it destroyed her late husband's confidence in people. Ros Hemmings and her daughter Debbie spoke out about Ms Winn, who worked for their property business in the early 2000s as a bookkeeper. They claim she stole around £64,000 from the family business. An investigation by The Observer in July suggested Winn's story about her life in The Salt Path was misleading. The Observer claimed that Raynor and her husband Moth, real names Sally and Tim Walker, lost their money after failing to pay money they had been accused of stealing from Martin Hemmings, husband of Ros. In a statement following The Observer investigation, Raynor Winn said: 'The dispute with Martin Hemmings, referred to in the Observer by his wife, is not the court case in The Salt Path. 'Nor did it result in us losing our home. Mr Hemmings is not Cooper. Mrs Hemmings is not in the book, nor is she a relative of someone who is. 'I worked for Martin Hemmings in the years before the economic crash of 2008. For me it was a pressured time. 'It was also a time when mistakes were being made in the business. Any mistakes I made during the years in that office, I deeply regret, and I am truly sorry.' The Daily Mail has contacted Winn's representatives for comment on Ms Cocking's claims.
