Arsenal confirm record-breaking signing of Smith from Liverpool
the record-breaking signing of forward Olivia Smith from Liverpool. The Gunners will pay a women's world record fee of more than £1m to bring in the 20-year-old, making her the first £1m player in the women's game. This landmark fee breaks a barrier that was first crossed in men's football back in 1979 when Trevor Francis moved from Birmingham City to Nottingham Forest for over £1m. Arsenal's ambition to push the boundaries of the women's transfer market is nothing new. The club previously had a £930,000 offer for Keira Walsh turned down by Barcelona last summer, but they have now succeeded by securing the signature of Canadian forward Smith. Capable of playing as both a winger and in a centre-forward role, Smith was handed her debut for the Canadian national team at only 15 in 2019. Smith joined Liverpool last summer from Sporting Lisbon, coming off an impressive season in Portugal with 13 goals and nine assists in just 18 appearances. The 20-year-old quickly adapted to life in Merseyside, netting seven goals across all competitions for the Reds and winning the club's player of the season award. The Canadian international attracted interest from several clubs, but the Champions League winners have secured her services. 'It's a privilege and an honour to sign for Arsenal,' Smith said. 'It's my dream to compete for the biggest titles here in England and in Europe and I'm excited to get started and contribute to doing that here with Arsenal. The atmosphere the supporters create at Emirates Stadium is incredible and I can't wait to have that behind me now. Head coach Renee Slegers said: 'Olivia is an exciting young player and we believe she can make a big contribution here at Arsenal. We've been impressed by her mentality and character, excelling in two European leagues at such a young age. 'I know she has a level of ambition that matches our own and we're looking forward to working with her as she continues to grow at the club.' She will link up in north London with former Liverpool teammate Taylor Hinds, who signed for the Gunners on a free transfer after leaving the Reds upon the expiry of her contract.

West Indies' Andre Russell retiring from internationals after Australia T20s
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — West Indies allrounder Andre Russell is retiring from international cricket after the two Twenty20s against Australia at his Sabina Park home ground. The games are on Sunday and Tuesday. Russell has played 84 T20s since 2011 and was a World Cup champion in 2012 and 2016. He's passed up a chance to play at a sixth T20 World Cup in eight months in India. Cricket West Indies said the 37-year-old Russell 'remains a high-impact player and was selected on merit.' 'To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life,' Russell said. 'When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realise what you can achieve. This inspired me to become better because I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others.' Daren Sammy was Russell's captain at both World Cup triumphs and has become his national coach. 'Andre has always been the consummate professional and a fierce competitor,' Sammy said. 'Whether I was captaining him or now coaching him, his hunger to perform and win for West Indies has never wavered. I wish him all the best on his next chapter, and I hope he continues to inspire generations to come.' Russell began his international career at age 22 with his sole test in 2010 against Sri Lanka. He played his 56th and last one-day international at the 2019 World Cup. He was a controversial selection as he'd played only one ODI since 2015 following a doping ban and knee injury. But he became the fastest player, in terms of balls played, to 1,000 ODI runs. Since then he's become a T20 great, sought by franchises all over the world. This month he was playing for Los Angeles in Major League Cricket. Russell will be replaced by Matthew Forde for the three T20s in St. Kitts and Nevis against Australia. ___ AP cricket:

Canada's Olivia Smith signed by Arsenal for women's world record 1M pounds
Canada forward Olivia Smith has become the first women's soccer player to be signed for one million pounds ($1.34 million). Arsenal signed Smith from Liverpool on Thursday reportedly for the world record fee. That fee would surpass the 900,000 pounds ($1.1 million) Chelsea paid when signing Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave in January, which set a new benchmark in women's soccer. 'She's one of the most talented young players in the game and has huge potential for further development here at the club,' Arsenal director of women's football Clare Wheatley said. Smith's move highlights the increase in spending in women's soccer with transfer records being broken on a regular basis in recent times. Zambia striker Rachael Kundananji joined Bay FC from Madrid CFF for a record $788,000 last year and that figure was quickly exceeded by Girma's move to Chelsea. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer:
