Cherating campers mourn friendly tapir killed by car on dark stretch of Kuantan-Kemaman road: ‘He was part of the park's charm'
Acting Kuantan police chief Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the incident occurred at about 12.10 am when the animal was crossing the road and was struck by a Perodua Alza.
"The driver, a 41-year-old man, was unhurt," he said in a statement.
Police were dispatched to the scene shortly after the incident to ensure traffic safety on the poorly lit stretch of road.
Adli added that the tapir's carcass, estimated to weigh over 120 kilogrammes, was handed over to the Pahang Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) for further action.
Badrol Hisham Mohamad, 44, who was among the first to come across the scene, said he immediately alerted the police and Perhilitan.
'The tapir is believed to have been hit by a vehicle carrying a family from Kemaman to Kuantan near the Mardi Cherating park.
'Several motorists also stopped to help direct traffic, as the carcass was lying in the middle of the road and posed a danger to others,' said the Kampung Sungai Ular resident.
The Mardi Cherating Agrotechnology Park, in a Facebook post, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the tapir's death as a major blow to wildlife lovers.
'One of the park's most beloved attractions is now gone. This protected tapir, a regular sight among campers and nature enthusiasts, had brought joy to many,' the post read. — Bernama

Teoh Beng Hock's family rejects MACC apology, says no justice without action on five officers
KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 — The family of the late Teoh Beng Hock has reportedly rejected an apology from Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki over Beng Hock's death 16 years ago. According to The Star, Teoh's younger sister, Teoh Lee Lan, 45, said the apology lacked sincerity as no MACC officer had been held accountable for her brother's death. 'They said they are apologising because they see our pain, but they are not surrendering the five officers we believe were involved,' she was quoted as saying at a press conference here last night. 'Their offer of a financial contribution is also shameful — we do not want money, we want the truth,' she reportedly added. According to the report, Lee Lan further criticised Azam's remarks, saying they implied that a human life could be compensated with money. Yesterday, Azam apologised to the family of Teoh Beng Hock, who died in 2009 at the building housing the commission's Selangor office. He said the MACC acknowledged the findings of past investigations, including a recent police probe that resulted in no further action, and expressed sympathy for the family's long-standing pain. Azam also said the MACC was prepared to offer a goodwill contribution for the welfare and education of Teoh's child.

Smugglers flee after RM2.3m cigarette bust in Kelantan police chase
KOTA BHARU, July 17 — Marine police foiled an attempt to smuggle 114 crates of white cigarettes in a raid at Kampung Alor Mengkuang, Pasir Mas on Tuesday. Region Three Marine Police Commander ACP Zulafendy Hassan said officers spotted a suspicious three-tonne lorry around 4 am near Chabang Empat, heading to Kampung Ana, Tumpat. The driver ignored orders to stop and tried to escape. He said two cars believed to be used by 'tontos' tried to block the police and almost hit an officer on a motorcycle. Police fired at the tyres of the lorry and the tonto vehicles, but the suspects kept going. The chase lasted 30 minutes before the lorry crashed into a parking barrier in Pasir Mas, and the driver ran off on foot. Inside the lorry, police found 114 cartons of Zon King white cigarettes, totalling about 1.14 million sticks, believed to be smuggled from a nearby country. Zulafendy said the seizure was worth about RM2.3 million, including tax, and the case was being investigated under the Customs Act and the Penal Code. He also urged the public to report border crimes by calling 09-5137726 or emailing [email protected]. — Bernama
