The winners of the Open Men and Open Women divisions will earn direct entry into the SurfCity El Salvador ALAS Global Finals, to be held in Nov. Among the participants is 13-year-old Wan-Yu Chen, a champion shortboard surfer from China. 'Surfing events like this are always a great mix of challenge and community, and Mamallapuram's unique waves make it even more exciting,' she says. Chen says she has been focusing on improving her paddle strength and overall endurance. 'I feel ready and excited to give it my best.' While global talents such as Chen prepare to make their mark, the championship is also offering local surfers a platform. 'Our training has been intense, but we still enjoy the process. Since I have surfed in Mamallapuram and also trained with my team here, I'll have a competitive advantage over surfers from other countries,' says Srikanth D, a surfer from Tamil Nadu. Organisers are rolling out outreach programmes for coastal and fishing communities such as free surf clinics for children from nearby villages. 'There will also be water safety and rescue workshops to equip local youth with basic lifesaving skills. With career awareness sessions we hope to introduce opportunities in surf coaching, event management and eco-tourism,' says Arun Vasu, president of SFI. 'To generate wider community interest, the event will feature surf exhibitions, movie screenings and demo days. Local surf schools and NGOs will help identify promising young surfers, who may be offered training support and scholarships. We have amazing talent in the state and our goal is to help them achieve their potential,' says Vasu. Email your feedback with name and address to

We have to choose our friendly matches wisely: India head coach Crispin Chettri after AFC Women's Asian Cup Draw

India senior women's team coach Crispin Chettri labelled the Blue Tigresses' group in the AFC Women's Asian Cup Australia 2026 an 'interesting and tricky' one. India was placed in Group C with Japan, Vietnam and Chinese Taipei in the draw ceremony at the Sydney Town Hall on Tuesday. 'I think we have a very interesting, and at the same time, a tricky group. Japan are the cream of Asia. Vietnam and Chinese Taipei are good sides, and we can compete with them and aim for favourable results,' Chettri told from Australia after the draw. Midfielder Sangita Basfore had the privilege of being one of the draw assistants. 'The whole experience at the draw here in Sydney was really special for me. I got to see and even touch the trophy, which felt amazing. I got goosebumps at the stage. The biggest highlight was visiting Stadium Australia in Sydney. The moment I stepped onto that ground, it felt like the match was about to begin,' she said. At no point did I feel that we couldn't beat them. We couldn't win earlier due to some mistakes, but we'll work on those. Our coach is with us, guiding us on the small details, what to do, and what to avoid. Based on that, we'll plan our next steps and give our best,' Sangita added. While the Asian stage is a grand one, the Blue Tigresses have firmly set their eyes on scaling an even higher peak — FIFA Women's World Cup qualification. And with the AFC Women's Asian Cup offering six direct and two indirect slots for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, this is an opportunity they want to grasp with both hands. With 218 days to go for India's opening match against Vietnam at the Perth Rectangular Stadium, the groundwork has already begun, and each day is going to count. Staying together as a unit and working hard in the camps will go a long way in helping us prepare to face the best teams in Asia and target World Cup qualification,' said Crispin. Sangita added, 'With the time we have now, we should be playing matches against higher-ranked teams, so we can be ready for next March. When we face those three teams in the Asian Cup, it will be easier for us to judge their game and play with confidence. Exposure to stronger teams will be a great opportunity and will help us build belief going into the tournament.'

India clubbed with Japan, Vietnam, and Chinese Taipei in Group C of Women's Asian Cup next year

The four semi-finalists will book their tickets to the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil, while the losing sides from the quarter-finals will advance to the playoffs, where two more spots at the global showpiece will be at stake. Japan, the Women's World Cup winner in 2011, is the highest-ranked Asian team in the FIFA chart at seventh. They won the Women's Asian Cup titles in 2014 and 2018 but were denied a hat-trick after losing to eventual champions China in the semi-finals in the 2022 edition held in India inside a COVID-19 bubble. Vietnam, ranked 37th, will be targeting a spot at the 2027 Women's World Cup after making their debut at the 2023 edition. They topped the play-off round among losing quarterfinalists in the 2022 Women's Asian Cup in India to make it to the 2023 Women's World Cup. Chinese Taipei, currently ranked 42nd, has won the last of their three AFC Women's Asian Cup titles in 1980, and they will also aim to qualify for the 2027 Women's World Cup. India is currently ranked 70th in the world, the lowest in the group. In Group A, hosts Australia were drawn alongside Korea Republic, Iran and Philippines. Group B consists of DPR Korea, China, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan. China is the defending champion and they will be seeking a record-extending 10th title. The Indian women's team was forced to withdraw from its group match against Chinese Taipei at the 2022 Women's Asian Cup in Navi Mumbai after a number of players tested positive for COVID-19 even while staying inside the bio-secure bubble. India was unable to name a minimum 13-woman squad for the match and it was considered a withdrawal, according to the competition rules. India had originally named a 23-member squad. That was after India played out a 0-0 draw in their first match against Iran.
