Republican Jim Jordan deposed in federal suit tied to sex abuse by late Ohio State team doctor
Jordan's deposition Friday came in a federal lawsuit brought by former student athletes against the university over its failure to stop abuse by Dr. Richard Strauss, who died in 2005. Hundreds say they were abused by Strauss, who worked at the school from 1978 to 1998.
Many ex-wrestlers over the years have accused Jordan, who served as assistant coach of the Ohio State wrestling team from 1986 to 1994, of knowing about the abuse and failing to act.
The 10-term congressman's office had declined to confirm Friday's deposition, but it reiterated Jordan's denial of any awareness of Strauss' crimes or the cover-up.
'As everyone knows, (House Judiciary) Chairman Jordan never saw or heard of any abuse, and if he had, he would have dealt with it,' a statement said. Jordan formerly sat for questioning during the university's independent investigation of the matter, but this was his first time under oath.
A Monday court filing shows attorneys for the former athletes also questioned Michael Murphy and John Doe 72, both plaintiffs in the case, on July 9 and July 11 respectively, and former long-time Ohio State Athletic Director Andy Geiger on Wednesday.
The depositions follow the airing of 'Surviving Ohio State,' a documentary on the Strauss scandal produced by George Clooney and directed by Academy and Emmy award-winning director Eva Orner. The film was released June 17 on HBO and Max.

From draft day doubts to Phillies' Wall of Fame: Jimmy Rollins' journey puts him with team greats
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jimmy Rollins was a Bay Area kid who grew up rooting for Rickey Henderson and admiring Jackie Robinson as he blossomed into one of the top high school prospects in baseball. So when the Philadelphia Phillies called in 1996 to tell the slick-fielding shortstop they had picked him in the second round of the draft, Rollins had one major question. 'I'm like, 'Who?' ' Rollins said with a laugh. Yes, the Phillies, one of the worst organizations in baseball throughout the late 1990s — and one Rollins turned into a perennial winner. Rollins led the Phillies to five straight NL East titles, the 2008 World Series championship, and another NL pennant the next year. He was the 2007 NL MVP, a three-time All-Star, had a 38-game hitting streak and set the franchise record for hits with 2,306. He had one more major franchise accolade to accomplish. Rollins at last took his place with Hall of Famers Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton and was inducted Friday night into the Phillies' Wall of Fame. 'I was meant to be here,' Rollins said. 'I got drafted here. I told my mom when we got drafted, I'm going to win a championship in this city. That's what it became about for me, was chasing that championship.' The core of that Phillies' run — five division titles from 2007-2011 on the strength of homegrown talent such as Rollins, Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels and Chase Utley — was built by former general manager Ed Wade. Wade, who helped move the organization into Citizens Bank Park in 2004, received his spot on the Wall with Rollins on Friday night. Howard inducted Rollins into the team's version of the Hall of Fame, saying the team leaned on him for the contagious confidence that made the Phillies the team to beat in the NL for so many years. 'You go, we go,' Howard told the crowd. 'Jimmy always went.' Utley pulled down the coverings that unveiled the Rollins and Wade plaques on the wall that greets fans in the left field concourse behind the scoreboard building. Rollins, who finished his career with stints with the Dodgers and the White Sox, earned just 18% of the Hall of Fame vote in last year's ballot, falling short of the 75% needed for election. Wade said Rollins' numbers compared to some of the great shortstops already in Cooperstown. 'This guy, from the standpoint of character, makeup and talent, he's a Hall of Famer in all three of those things,' Wade said. 'There are some guys in Cooperstown that may check one or two of those boxes. This guy checks all three of those boxes. I understand the statistical aspect of it. Defense, check his box. Driver injured after falling tree crushes car in Holliston
A man is hospitalized after the car he was driving was hit by a falling tree in Holliston, Massachusetts. The fire department said it happened on Prentice Street just before 2:30 on Friday afternoon. Video from SkyEye showed the van had severe damage to the windshield and the driver's side front door. One woman who lives on that street told WBZ-TV she heard the crash from her bathroom and ran out to find the car was on top of tree branches. "It had a big branch underneath it. I thought maybe the guy ran over the tree and I went up to the vehicle and part of the tree fell into the car and I called 911 right away," said the woman who did not want to be identified. When paramedics arrived, the woman said they pulled the man out of the passenger side of the car. Holliston fire officials said the driver was ultimately flown to a hospital in Worcester. His condition is unknown. Back on Prentice Street, the woman we spoke with said she and her sister had been complaining about dead trees along the road for weeks. Their concern was that they would ultimately fall into the road or onto their house. "We have noticed that these trees are dead, and we have been calling the town asking if they can remove them and then this happened," said the woman. WBZ-TV reached out to the Holliston Town Manager for this report but have not heard back.

Miami pastor, alleged fake immigration attorney charged in $21,000 fraud scheme, MDSO says
A Miami pastor and an alleged unlicensed immigration attorney face felony charges after authorities said they defrauded at least 16 victims out of more than $21,000, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office. Authorities said Nelson David Ochoa Vazquez, 46, and Ismer Gonzalez, 44, were arrested July 31, following an investigation into a months-long scheme involving fraudulent immigration services. Detectives said the men operated the fraud between April 18, 2024, and January 18, 2025. Ochoa Vazquez allegedly used his church, La Iglesia de Dios Jireh at 4900 SW 118th Ave., to connect victims to Gonzalez, who falsely claimed to be an immigration attorney able to help them obtain driver's licenses and work permits. Victims were instructed to pay through Zelle or cash. Zelle payments were sent to a business called Brothers Multiservicio LLC, registered solely to Gonzalez, while cash payments went directly to Ochoa Vazquez, according to the sheriff's office. Authorities said none of the promised services were delivered, nor were any refunds provided. A search of Florida Bar records confirmed neither Gonzalez nor Ochoa Vazquez is licensed to practice law in Florida and both were confirmed unauthorized by direct inquiry to the Bar, detectives reported. Subpoenaed bank records showed that Zelle payments were deposited into a Truist account, where Gonzalez was listed as the sole authorized signer. Funds from that account were spent on luxury goods from brands such as Gucci, Dior and Louis Vuitton and on travel to South America and Europe, the arrest report said. Investigators also found that checks from the Brothers Multiservicio LLC account were deposited into a separate Bank of America account solely registered to Ochoa Vazquez. Authorities arrested Ochoa Vazquez at an address in the 12000 block of SW 40th St. in Miami on July 31. He was read his Miranda rights in Spanish, which he acknowledged and waived, according to the report. During an interview, Ochoa Vazquez admitted to working for Gonzalez and receiving cash payments for completing work permit forms. However, detectives noted his statements conflicted with established findings in the case. Ochoa Vazquez and Gonzalez are both facing second-degree felony charges of organized fraud and grand theft. Both are being held without bond pending a Nebbia hearing, where they will have to show that the source of the bail premium and collateral has a legitimate source.
