Zurich councilor indicted for shooting at Madonna and child poster
The Zurich public prosecutor's office confirmed the indictment of Sanija Ameti to The Associated Press on Monday. Her actions in September caused an uproar, prompting her to resign from the local leadership of the Green-Liberal party. Ameti is now listed as an independent on the website of the municipal council.
A redacted copy of the indictment, posted by the activist group Mass Voll, said Ameti was accused of 'disturbing religious freedom' and that prosecutors were seeking a fine and penalty equivalent to 12,500 Swiss francs (about $15,600).
The Swiss criminal code says anyone who 'publicly and maliciously insults or mocks the religious convictions of others' or 'maliciously desecrates objects of religious veneration' is liable to a monetary penalty, the indictment copy stated.
A top leader with Operation Libero, a political movement Ameti co-founded that describes itself as liberal and progressive, did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.
Ameti apologized at the time and quickly pulled down the images after posting them on Instagram and reportedly sought police protection against threats after the incident. She later said she had been practicing shots and found the poster 'big enough' for a suitable target.
The poster, an advertisement, showed details of the work 'Madonna with Child and the Archangel Michael' by 14th-century Italian painter Tommaso del Mazza before a sale.

The case relates to an alleged incident at a beach club in the south of Gran Canaria in 2023. The three other players (Ferran Ruiz, Juan Rodriguez, and Andres Garcia) were arrested in September 2023. After Asencio was called to give testimony as a witness, he then became part of the Guardia Civil (Civil Guard, Spanish law enforcement) investigation. At that point, the club said 'a Castilla player and three Real Madrid C players' had made statements to the Guardia Civil 'relating to a complaint about the alleged broadcasting of a private video via WhatsApp'. 'When the club has detailed knowledge of the facts, we will take the appropriate measures,' it added. The Athletic reported in February that a Spanish court rejected an appeal on behalf of Asencio for the provisional dismissal of the case. Court documents during that appeal confirmed that one of the women was under the age of 16 when the alleged incident took place. When contacted by The Athletic on Friday evening, Asencio's representatives said they were trusting justice would prevail. Real Madrid declined to comment when asked. In the event that charges are finally brought and an oral trial is opened, I will continue to exercise my defence before the Courts and Tribunals, in which I maintain full confidence, reaffirming that I am not involved in any criminal conduct.' Asencio was targeted with abusive chants on occasion during the 2024-25 season, and former Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said in February he would not consider dropping the defender to protect him from the chants. He had a breakthrough season at Madrid in 2024-25 after long-term injuries to fellow defenders Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal, and he made 41 first-team appearances since his debut in November. Asencio received his first call-up to the Spain senior side in March, and in June, The Athletic reported he had extended his contract at Madrid through to 2031. The air traffic control worker who went by Lilian, discussed the incident in a TikTok video, saying the child was prohibited from flying because of his expired passport. He also required a visa. "His passport in the country was expired, so the child was traveling with a Spanish passport but the Spanish passport needed a visa. As they did not have a visa, they left the child at the terminal and called a relative to come and pick him up," said Lilian. Airport staff found the boy by himself and alerted authorities, the worker claimed, according to The Sun report. "He told them that his parents were on the plane on their way to their home country, going on vacation," she said. Contact was made with the plane's pilot, who reportedly confirmed that the police told him there was a minor in the car park. He then asked passengers "if someone had left a child in the terminal and no one had answered." The parents were located, who were accompanied by another younger child. The parents were taken to a police station to get their son. "How is it possible for parents to leave their ten-year-old son at the terminal because he cannot travel due to documentation issues?" Lilian said. "They call a relative but the relative may take half an hour, about an hour, about three hours and they take the flight so calmly and leave the child behind!"
