Two participants injured after another breached safety protocol during Pesta Sukan archery event
Two participants were injured after a "breach of protocol" during the Pesta Sukan archery competition at the Bukit Gombak Stadium on July 13.
SINGAPORE – Two participants required outpatient treatment after they were injured by an arrow during a scheduled break at the Pesta Sukan archery competition at Bukit Gombak Stadium on July 13.
Preliminary assessment by Sport Singapore (SportSG) indicated that a participant 'breached safety protocols' by loading a bow in the gallery. The arrow was then accidentally released.
The Straits Times understands that all three participants involved in the incident are aged between 17 and 20, and the two victims 'suffered minor injuries', understood to be cuts which did not require stitches.
Both participants were treated by on-site paramedics and have completed outpatient treatment.
Safety measures, including a pre-event safety briefing, were in place for the competition.
When contacted, a SportSG spokesperson said: 'An incident occurred this morning during a scheduled break and was due to a breach of safety protocols by a participant.
'When the incident occurred, prompt medical assistance was provided on-site and the competition was immediately halted.

Japan launches government body to address concerns over foreigners
Find out what's new on ST website and app. Concerns over the influx of foreigners, both temporary and permanent, have resonated with voters ahead of Japan's national elections on July 20. TOKYO - Japan on July 15 set up an administrative body aimed at easing citizens' concerns over the rapid rise in the number of foreigners in recent years, as policies concerning non-Japanese residents emerge as a key issue in the upcoming national election on July 20. The body would serve as a cross-agency 'control tower' to respond to issues such as crime and over-tourism involving foreigners, the government said. Japan has long sought to maintain a homogeneous population through strict immigration laws, but has gradually eased them to supplement its shrinking and ageing labour force. The number of foreign nationals hit a record of about 3.8 million last year, although that is still just 3 per cent of the total population. The formation of the administration body comes after a group of lawmakers in Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's Liberal Democratic Party in June proposed measures to realise a 'society of orderly and harmonious coexistence with foreign nationals'. Those measures included adopting stricter requirements for foreigners switching to a Japanese driver's licence and for buying real estate properties. 'Crimes and disorderly conduct by some foreigners, as well as the inappropriate use of various administrative systems, have created a situation in which the public feels uneasy and cheated,' Mr Ishiba said at the kick-off ceremony. India captain Gill says Pant should be fit to play in fourth test
Find out what's new on ST website and app. FILE PHOTO: Cricket - Second Test - England v India - Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham, Britain - July 5, 2025 India's Rishabh Pant walks back to the pavilion after losing his wicket, caught out by England's Ben Duckett off the bowling of Shoaib Bashir Action Images via Reuters/Paul Childs/File Photo LONDON - India captain Shubman Gill said the finger injury suffered by Rishabh Pant in the third test against England is not overly serious and the wicketkeeper-batsman should be able to play in the next match in Manchester. Pant injured the index finger of his left hand when trying to collect a delivery from Bumrah during England's first innings at Lord's. Pant completed the over but did not keep wickets afterwards, though he batted in both innings. Dhruv Jurel replaced him behind the stumps for the remainder of the test, which England won by 22 runs to go 2-1 up in the five-match series. "Rishabh went for scans and there is no major injury there," Gill told reporters. "I think he should be fine for the next test match." Pant is the second-highest scorer in the series with his tally of 425 from six innings, which includes two hundreds, second only to Gill's 607. Tempers flared throughout the contest at the home of cricket and India seamer Mohammed Siraj was slapped with a fine and one demerit point for his reaction after taking the wicket of England opener Ben Duckett. "I think that's what makes it so exciting, that's what makes it more challenging. "But the next time we play each other, there won't be (any bad blood). There's a lot of admiration within for the two teams." The fourth test at Old Trafford begins on July 23. REUTERS

Russia says it destroys 55 Ukrainian drones overnight, one person injured
Find out what's new on ST website and app. One person was injured as a result of Ukraine's overnight drone attack on the city of Yelets in Russia's southwestern region of Lipetsk, regional governor Igor Artamonov said early on Tuesday. "A UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) crashed in an industrial zone. One person was injured and is receiving all necessary medical assistance," Artamonov said on the Telegram messaging app. The Russian defence ministry said on Telegram that its units destroyed 55 Ukrainian drones overnight over five Russian regions and the Black Sea, including three over the Lipetsk region. The full damage of the attack on Russia were not immediately known. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine about the attack. Both sides deny targeting civilians in their strikes during the war that Russia launched against Ukraine more than three years ago. But thousands of civilians have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian. Ukraine has launched multiple air strikes on Lipetsk, a strategically important region with an air base that is the chief training centre for the Russian Aerospace Forces. REUTERS
