Mexico takes on Saudi Arabia in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals with a spot in the tournament's final four on the line (FS1, 10 p.m. ET).
The winner will take on Honduras in the Gold Cup semifinals on Wednesday.
Mexico will have the crowd behind them at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, but face a tough Saudi side who have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup.

PARIS -- France's union of professional soccer players launched a scathing attack on the Club World Cup on Sunday, saying it is 'urgent to stop this massacre' amid ongoing concerns about extreme player workloads. The UNFP also accused FIFA president Gianni Infantino of living 'in an ivory tower' by ignoring the impact congested calendars have on players worldwide. 'The incongruity of the situation is not lost on anyone, except, of course, Gianni Infantino and his flatterers. From the height of his ivory tower, which he parades around the world, the FIFA president is not bothered by the fate that the international calendar reserves for the game's leading players,' the UNFP said in a statement early Sunday morning. 'His (Infantino's) Club World Cup proves, to the point of absurdity, that it is urgent to stop this massacre game. He flouts the physical and mental health of players for a few more dollars." The UNFP statement said the Club World Cup comes at the end of an already exhausting season, and thereby ignores 'collective bargaining agreements (which) almost everywhere, provide for an incompressible period of three weeks of rest for footballers between two seasons.' FIFA was approached for comment by The Associated Press. Days before the start of the month-long Club World Cup, which ends on July 13, soccer chiefs faced renewed calls to safeguard players over growing fears of injuries and burnout. The newly expanded tournament involving 32 of the world's best teams has faced pushback since FIFA announced it would be added to an already saturated calendar. The tournament will be played every four years, sandwiched in between the men's World Cup, European Championship and Copa America. It went ahead against the backdrop of legal challenges in Europe, strike threats and repeated concerns over players' mental and physical welfare due to too many games. 'The UNFP, like FIFPRO and FIFPRO Europe, has been protesting for years against the drastic increase in workloads,' The UNFP added. 'But also against the harmful repercussions for domestic football of a calendar that FIFA is still alone in building today.' Last September, Manchester City midfielder Rodri suffered a severe knee injury soon after saying players were close to going on strike over excessive workloads. Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain is one of the biggest sides involved in the Club World Cup. After winning the Champions League on May 31, key PSG players like Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué played for France and then went to the United States soon after for the Club World Cup. Some French clubs have already resumed training for the upcoming Ligue 1 season, which begins mid-August, while others start next week. PSG was not able to push back its start to the Ligue 1 season. 'We don't see how or why the Parisians should not benefit from the three weeks of complete rest they are entitled to,' the UNFP said, adding that the toll of extra games for PSG's players could impact the national team in early September. "A delay in preparation that must also worry (France coach) Didier Deschamps ahead of two qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup," the UNFP said, before concluding. 'What do you say, Mr. Infantino?' FIFA hopes the event will be to club soccer what the World Cup is to international soccer and establish itself as one of the biggest and wealthiest tournaments in sport. The old version of the Club World Cup, which was played yearly, was dominated by European teams in recent times. Only Brazilian team Corinthians broke Europe's winning run in 17 years.

Jesse Marsch on Canada's early Gold Cup exit: 'We're missing half of our group'
The highly-anticipated rematch between the United States and Canada will have to wait, as Les Rouges were eliminated from the CONCACAF Gold Cup in a 6-5 penalty-kick decision after a 1-1 draw with Guatemala on Sunday. Canada, which had the third-best odds to win the tournament behind the U.S. and Mexico, was set for a date with the United States in the semifinals, but things didn't go according to plan. When Canada coach Jesse Marsch was asked about his team's early exit, he cited the missing players on his roster. "If I'm honest, we're missing half of our group," Marsch told reporters. "That's not an excuse." Before the tournament started, Marsch made headlines for seemingly taking aim at the stars of the U.S. men's team for not participating in the Gold Cup. "Not one guy called me and said, 'Coach, I don't know, it's been a long year, maybe I don't come to the Gold Cup.' Not one guy," Marsch said earlier this month. "Not even close to that conversation." The most notable absence for Canada is Alphonso Davies, who many consider to be the best left back in the world. Davies sustained a torn right ACL in March during the Concacaf Nations League. USMNT survives Costa Rica thriller, advances to Gold Cup semifinals via Matt Freese's penalty shootout heroics
MINNEAPOLIS — The U.S. men's national team scraped past Costa Rica in a dramatic Gold Cup quarterfinal here on Sunday, winning 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw over 90 roller-coaster minutes. The USMNT erased an early deficit, but blew a second-half lead. Then, after the 90 minutes ended level, it blew another lead in a roller-coaster shootout. But goalkeeper Matt Freese, in his first month as the U.S. starter, made three massive saves to one-up Costa Rican legend Keylor Nava and send the USMNT through to the semifinals, where they'll face Guatemala. Advertisement "Penalties are my thing," Freese said post-match. "[On] the plane ride over here to Minnesota, I was studying penalties. I've been studying them all week and I was ready for it if we needed it." Freese first sprung low to his left. Conversions from Tyler Adams and Malik Tillman — who'd missed a penalty in regulation — put the U.S. ahead. But Sebastian Berhalter's miss relinquished the advantage. Substitute U.S. striker Damion Downs then stepped up, scored, and sparked the wild celebrations. The night began with the U.S. going behind in the 12th minute. Max Arfsten's clumsy tackle gave Costa Rica a penalty. Francisco Calvo converted. And for 20 minutes thereafter, the U.S. struggled. After half an hour, it had two shots and zero on goal. The USMNT looked as stagnant as ever, until Malik Tillman played a slick one-two with Patrick Agyemang. Tillman's cross came to nothing, but a Costa Rican follow-through caught his ankle. A few minutes later, referee Walter Lopez went to the monitor, and, after a VAR review, pointed to the penalty spot. Advertisement Tillman stepped up, and missed the penalty. But from there, the U.S. came alive. Arfsten, who was at fault on both Costa Rica goals, set up Diego Luna for a deflected equalizer. And then, after halftime, Arfsten put the U.S. ahead. Tillman, whose head had dropped after missing the penalty, engineered an incisive attacking move to set him up. From then on, their first-half faults were forgotten. The U.S. looked comfortable. A semifinal matchup with Guatemala, and a path to a final against Mexico, seemed to have opened up. But in the 71st minute, Costa Rica's Carlos Mora split Arfsten and Luca de la Torre, and knifed into the box. He fired a shot at Freese. He took the rebound, and teed up Alonso Martínez for Costa Rica's second goal of the night. From there, it was Los Ticos who pressed for a winner. Martínez slammed a well-hit shot off the post in the 85th minute. Advertisement Neither side could find a winner, though, and a tense match went to penalties. That's where Freese came up huge to send the Americans to the semifinals, where they'll face Guatemala on Wednesday in St. Louis.
