England Bring In 35-Year-Old Veteran To Replace Injured Shoaib Bashir Vs India
England have called up 35-year-old Liam Dawson to replace injured off-spinner Shoaib Bashir for the remainder of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Dawson, who last played a Test in 2017 against South Africa, has been one of the most in-form spinners in the domestic County circuit for the past few years. He'll beat strong competition from the veteran spinner Jack Leach, and the likes of Rehan Ahmed, Will Jacks and even Jacob Bethell for the job.
National Selector, Luke Wright, said: 'Liam Dawson deserves his call-up. He has been in outstanding form in the County Championship and consistently puts in strong performances for Hampshire."
Dawson bowls slow left-arm spin and is more than handy as a number eight batter, and his arrival will certainly add more depth to the home side. He has played three Tests, six ODIs, and 14 T20Is for England so far.
He was out of the international arena completely for the better part of the last two years and had not signed the central contract either, informing the England and Wales Cricket Board of his willingness to play the more lucrative franchise cricket around the world if he wasn't going to start for the national side. It was also one of the reason why he missed out on England's big tour of India early last year, where Bashir made his debut.
'Probably not now, no. Being honest, there's a few things that have happened over the last year. For me, probably Test cricket now is completely off the radar. But it is what it is, I'm 34 and I want to enjoy my cricket and try to win trophies towards the end of my career," Dawson told ESPNcricinfo in March 2024.
Bashir fractured a finger in his left hand trying to stop a shot from India's Ravindra Jadeja at Lord's. He continued to field and bowl, though, and took the final wicket of the Test to seal the 22-run win for England.
He'll now undergo surgery and won't be able to participate in the remaining two Tests of the series, the first of which will begin at Old Trafford on July 23.
'It is not good news," England captain Ben Stokes said after the match. 'It will be disappointing for us as a team and for him. It is a big shame but the courage that he showed to go out there and bat for us and be willing to sit there on the bench and wait for his moment to bowl, I think it proves how much it means to everyone who gets to put the shirt on. Not even a couple of breaks is going to stop anyone getting out there."
Meanwhile, seam bowlers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton have returned to their respective counties.

Kuldeep IN, Debutant To Replace Bumrah? Ajinkya Rahane Answers India's Queries
Last Updated: Ajinkya Rahane urges Kuldeep Yadav's inclusion in India's XI for the third Test against England. He also suggests Arshdeep Singh for Jasprit Bumrah, if the latter is rested. Ajinkya Rahane has batted for Kuldeep Yadav's inclusion in India's 11 for the third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at Old Trafford, Manchester. The Mumbai captain believes that on flat tracks, which have been the theme of the three Tests so far, Kuldeep's wicket-taking ability adds more value than an all-rounder's extra 25-30 runs, while also making the team less reliant on senior pacers. Since his debut in 2017 under Rahane's captaincy, Kuldeep, once called India's best overseas spinner by Ravi Shastri, has played just 13 Tests. That's the same number as his current India bowling coach, the long-retired Morne Morkel, in that time. Unlike Rahane and Ravi Shastri, Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir have preferred batting depth over bowling might, choosing as many as three all-rounders in the Lord's Test. 'Depending on the condition of the wicket, I feel Kuldeep should play," Rahane said in a recent video on his YouTube channel, as quoted by Sportskeeda. 'If the wicket is similar to the last three Test matches, Kuldeep should play because you need guys who can get you those wickets. Our batting unit is doing really well. Even if you score 25-30 runs less, that's okay. But you need people who can get you those wickets. You don't want to depend on your leading fast bowlers every time," he added. If India decide to bring in Kuldeep, it could be for either the big score-searching Karun Nair or Nitish Kumar Reddy, who did impress with the ball but failed with the bat at Lord's. Rahane was also asked if Arshdeep Singh could be an able replacement for Jasprit Bumrah if India decide to rest the latter (which they haven't suggested they'll yet) at Old Trafford. 'I think so, yes," Rahane said. 'If Bumrah is not playing, Arshdeep is the guy. Because in England, you need a left-arm seamer who can swing the ball both ways, and also, with a different angle, he can create that rough for the spinners. So, if Bumrah doesn't play, Arshdeep should play the next one." The Test begins at 3:30 pm IST on July 23. view comments First Published: July 18, 2025, 23:17 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Michel Platini Sacres Off Burglar But 20 Trophies & Medals Stolen: Reports
Last Updated: Michel Platini encountered a burglar at his villa in Cassis, France. Thieves stole around 20 trophies and medals. Football legend Michel Platini encountered a burglar at his villa in the south of France on Friday, a source close to the police investigation informed AFP. Platini, 70, heard a noise in the garden of his property in Cassis early in the morning and came face to face with a masked man, who fled with several trophies and medals, according to the source. The thieves specifically targeted the garden pavilion, where most of the trophies were displayed. As per reports, approximately 20 of his trophies and medals from his illustrious career were taken. The Marseille prosecutor's office confirmed the opening of an investigation into aggravated burglary at Michel Platini's home to the French media group RTL. The local gendarmerie brigade is conducting the initial investigations. Platini played 72 times for France and won the Ballon d'Or award for the world's top player three consecutive years from 1983 to 1985. He led France to the semi-finals of the World Cup in both 1982 and 1986. Who Is Michel Platini? The former French captain, a star of Juventus and Saint Etienne, is regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time and was ranked seventh in the FIFA Player of the Century vote. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was named a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1985 and promoted to Officer in 1998. Shortly after leaving the pitch for the final time, Platini turned to coaching, becoming the French national coach in 1988. In December 2015, Platini was banned from international football for eight years following a FIFA investigation that revealed he had accepted an improper payment from Sepp Blatter, the president of FIFA. This revelation was part of the 2015 corruption scandal implicating over two dozen FIFA officials and their associates in a 24-year self-enrichment scheme that reached the highest levels of FIFA management. Platini's punishment was reduced to four years upon appeal, but he resigned from UEFA in May 2016 when his ban was not fully overturned. In 2019, he was briefly detained during an investigation into corruption allegations related to Qatar's selection as the host of the 2022 World Cup. Two years later, Swiss authorities indicted Platini and Blatter on fraud charges connected to the FIFA payment. The two men went on trial in 2022 and were both acquitted. Divya Deshmukh Upsets Zhu Jiner To Book FIDE Women's World Cup Quarters Spot
Last Updated: Divya Deshmukh advanced to the FIDE Women's World Cup quarterfinals by defeating Chinese GM Zhu Jiner. Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli and R. Vaishali are also through. Divya Deshmukh shocked Chinese GM Zhu Jiner to advance to the quarterfinals of the FIDE Women's World Cup in Batumi, Georgia on Friday. The 19-year-old Divya won Game 1 of the 25+10 Rapid tiebreaks and drew Game 2, securing her victory. Earlier, Deshmukh lost her second game with black pieces to Zhu on Thursday, after having defeated the world no. 6 from China with white pieces the previous day. In another match, GM Koneru Humpy knocked out GM Alexandra Kosteniuk to also reach the Quarterfinals. Both their classical games ended in a draw. Humpy triumphed in Game 1 of the 15+10 Rapid tiebreaks and drew Game 2 to win the match. Harika will face Divya in an all-Indian quarterfinal. Along with Divya Deshmukh and Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli and R. Vaishali secured their places in the quarterfinals. R. Vaishali split the games in the 15+10 and 10+10 Rapid tiebreaks against Kazakhstan's Meruert Kamalidenova. The match proceeded to blitz tiebreaks, where each player had five minutes with a three-second increment per move in each game. Vaishali drew the first game with the black pieces before ultimately defeating the Kazakh with the white pieces in the second game. Vaishali's quarterfinal opponent will be China's Tan Zhongyi, who lost to compatriot Ju Wenjun at the Women's World Championship earlier this year. The FIDE Women's World Cup follows a format where all games are played head-to-head over two classical games, with each player using white and black pieces once. If no winner emerges after two classical games, the match proceeds to tiebreaks, with progressively shorter time controls until a winner is determined. The two classical games are played over two days, and the tiebreaks take place on the third day. Initially, players compete in best-of-two games in the 15 minutes (+10 seconds increment per move) format, known as 15+10. If this does not separate the players, the time control is reduced to 10 minutes (+10 seconds increment per move), called 10+10, for another two games. If the tie persists, the time is further reduced to five minutes + three seconds (5+3). If still undecided, the competition moves to a sudden death format with a single game of three minutes + 2 seconds (3+2) until a winner is found. The top three finishers in the FIDE Women's World Cup earn a spot in next year's Women's Candidates tournament, the final step towards challenging the reigning women's world champion. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
