Zach Collaros does it all for unbeaten Blue Bombers in win over Edmonton Elks
Zach Collaros threw three touchdown passes and ran for a critical TD himself to lead the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 36-23 victory over the Edmonton Elks on Thursday.
The veteran quarterback, who was 25 of 30 for 334 yards, connected on two touchdown strikes to Nic Demski, one for eight yards and another for 60. Keric Wheatfall hauled in a 52-yard TD pass.
Demski, who was a game-time decision with an injured ankle, extended his reception streak to 74 consecutive games.
The Blue Bombers upped their record to 3-0 in front of a seventh consecutive sellout at Princess Auto Stadium. Edmonton remained winless at 0-3.
Winnipeg has won its last 13 meetings against Edmonton and are 16-2 against the club since 2017.
Fans got an exciting finish.
Winnipeg led 23-13 at halftime, but Elks quarterback Tre Ford came out firing in the third quarter, hitting Kaion Julien-Grant with a 68-yard touchdown pass at 2:01.
Edmonton kicker Vincent Blanchard followed that up with a 41-yard field goal to tie the game 23-23.
Winnipeg responded by marching down to Edmonton's 22-yard line, but only came away with a 30-yard Sergio Castillo field goal at 2:36 of the fourth.
The Bombers then chewed up the clock midway through the quarter, putting up an 11-play, 86-yard drive that Collaros capped by escaping from pressure and running 13 yards into the end zone with 5:42 left.
Castillo added a 23-yard field goal with 1:20 remaining.
Ford was 18 of 29 for 252 yards and no interceptions.
Elks backup Cody Fajardo scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak. Blanchard was also good on field goals from 38 and 29 yards and made his two converts.
Castillo also booted a 35-yard field goal and made three of four convert attempts.
Both teams scored on their second possession of the game.
Fajardo busted over on a one-yard quarterback sneak, but Winnipeg responded with Demski's eight-yard TD catch. Castillo missed the convert attempt to give the Elks a 7-6 lead.
Blanchard booted a 38-yard field goal one minute into the second quarter.
The Bombers replied with Collaros sailing the ball to Wheatfall along the sidelines, who got by his defender and ran into
the end zone at 2:39.
Three minutes later, Collaros threw a deep pass to Demski, who bumped off his defender and sped into the end zone for a 60-yard score. Castillo was good on his convert to make it 20-10.
Both teams were then hit by fumbles.
Edmonton didn't capitalize but Winnipeg used its turnover for Castillo's 35-yarder that made it 23-10 with under two minutes left in the first half.
Collaros was 16 of 18 passing for 232 yards and three touchdowns at halftime.
After Julien-Grant's TD catch, Bombers defensive back Evan Holm intercepted Ford midway through the third, but he was called for pass interference. Ford was sacked by Kyrie Wilson on the next play.

While Maier was effective moving the ball at times through the air, a strong rushing attack and a defence that forced four turnovers helped take some pressure off him. In 45 career starts with Calgary prior to coming to Saskatchewan, Maier has thrown for 300 yards on 13 different occasions. He threw for 170 yards on Saturday night and that was more than enough to get the win. Article content 2. It's a luxury for the Roughriders to have an experienced backup. Sure Maier is no Harris but unlike what Saskatchewan went last through with the inexperience of Shea Patterson, who made his first career CFL start in 2024 when Harris was injured, Maier — a veteran of 45 career starts — looked comfortable in the pocket all night even if he didn't make every throw (13 of 23). Experienced depth can pay dividends. Article content 3. Leading the way in the running game was A.J. Ouellette, who had a career-high 139 yards on a career-high 23 carries in his sixth CFL season. After notching his first interception in the CFL since 2018 last week against Toronto, Riders defensive back Tevaughn Campbell was the one scoring on that pick-six as he put exclamation on the first half with an interception returned for a touchdown to put the Riders up 16-7 at the break. Filling that cornerback spot was one of the biggest needs for the Roughriders this off-season and Campbell — who has adjusted back to the CFL game after six years in the NFL — has been a great addition.

A.J. Ouellette recorded his first 100-yard game in green and white as the Saskatchewan Roughriders beat the B.C. Lions 37-18 on Saturday night in Week 4 of the CFL season. Article content In front of an announced crowd of 27,804 at Mosaic Stadium, the Roughriders improved to 4-0 for a second straight season while the Lions fell to 1-3. Toronto FC secures rare home win, shuts out Portland Timbers with 3-0 score
Goals by Alonso Coello and Tyrese Spicer helped injury-depleted Toronto FC to a 3-0 victory over the Portland Timbers on Saturday, snapping a five-game winless run (0-4-1) at home. Toronto added an insurance goal in stoppage time, with Derrick Etienne Jr.'s cross bouncing in off Portland defender Ian Smith with TFC forward Deandre Kerr nearby. Despite missing nine players through injury and international duty, Toronto led the dance the entire evening before an announced crowd of 22,445 at BMO Field. It was a rare quiet night for Toronto goalkeeper Sean Johnson, who posted his fifth clean sheet of the season. Portland attempted just four shots, none on target, compared to 16 for Toronto (seven on target). It was a pleasant 22 Celsius, feeling like 24 C, at kickoff. And Toronto (4-10-5) showed some spring in its step to start, unlike mid-week when it had to rally from a dismal first half to tie the visiting New York Red Bulls 1-1. After David Ayala took down Raoul Petretta outside the Portland penalty box in front of goal, Coello made the Timbers pay in the 11th minute with a fine free kick. Coello, whose set-piece deliveries have been a bright spot for Toronto this season, fired the ball past both the Portland wall and Canadian goalkeeper James Pantemis for his second career MLS goal. Spicer made it 2-0 in the 56th minute, off a corner. Pantemis made a marvellous, lunging one-handed save to stop Kosi Thompson's header but the ball squibbed back to Spicer, who acrobatically lashed it home for his second of the season. Toronto went into weekend play in 14th place in the Eastern Conference, 11 points and five places below the final playoff position. Before Saturday, it had collected just five of a possible 33 points at home (1-7-3). Portland (8-5-6) arrived in fourth place in the Western Conference, having lost just one of its last seven outings (3-1-3). It had not played since June 13 – a 1-1 draw with visiting San Jose that saw the Earthquakes score a 94th-minute equalizer. Toronto was missing injured defenders Nicksoen Gomis, Kobe Franklin, Zane Monlouis and Henry Wingo, midfielders Jonathan Osorio and Markus Cimermancic and Italian star winger Federico Bernardeschi. Fullback/wingback Richie Laryea and midfielder Deybi Flores are away with Canada and Honduras, respectively, at the Gold Cup. Italian designated player Lorenzo Insigne, who did not make it off the bench Wednesday, did not even dress Saturday. The 34-year-old Italian, who has one goal and three assists this season, is the league's second-highest-paid player at US$15.4 million but apparently is surplus to requirements for a franchise that went into weekend play 28th in the 30-team league. Coach Robin Fraser made three changes to his starting 11 with Sigurd Rosted, Thompson and Spicer slotting in. There wasn't much in reserve with the average age of the Toronto bench just 22, including TFC 2 defender Reid Fisher and midfielders Michael Sullivan and Malik Henry, all signed to short-term MLS agreements to make up the numbers. Portland winger Omir Fernandez had to leave in the 54th minute after going down awkwardly. The Timbers had more of the ball in the first half with 59.5 per cent possession but did little with it, failing to register a shot. TFC had five shots, two on target. At the other end, Norwegian striker Ola Bryhildsen showed flashes of his attacking ability for Toronto while generally making a nuisance of himself to Portland defenders. Toronto winger Theo Corbeanu, who scored mid-week, and Portland fullback Jimer Fory had a spirited battle down the right flank. Portland was without injured defender Zac McGraw, midfielder Ariel Lassiter and forwards Jonathan Rodriguez and Antony, the team's leading scorer with six goals. Goalkeeper Max Crepeau and defender Kamal Miller are with Canada at the Gold Cup. Short on bodies, the Timbers had just six outfield players on its bench. It was just the 12th league meeting between the two teams, with Toronto holding a 6-4-2 edge. They last met in 2022 when Toronto won 3-1 at home. TFC held a 5-1-0 edge over the Timbers at home, with the lone previous win at BMO Field a 2-1 decision in April 2019. Only five of TFC's remaining 15 games are at home. Toronto's next game is Thursday at New York City FC.
