'Lilo & Stitch': Disney's pleasant surprise

LE MONDE'S VERDICT – WORTH SEEING
Just a few months ago, Disney left audiences with a sour taste in their mouths: After numerous controversies and a wave of widely followed boycotts, Snow White, released in theaters in March, proved to be the biggest financial failure in the company's history and one of the most trying live-action Disney films to watch. Released without controversy or excessive hype, Lilo & Stitch – the live-action adaptation of the 2002 animated film – may well be the first step toward reconciling with the public.
Heavily inspired by E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg, 1982), the film recounts the daily life of Lilo, a rambunctious 6-year-old orphan raised by her older sister, who is herself closely monitored by social services threatening to take away her custody. At the moment when Lilo must be on her best behavior, she adopts Stitch, a strange pet as hyperactive as she is. What she does not know is that Stitch is an extraterrestrial creature being pursued by his creators, who want to bring him back to their spaceship.
The film's relative success rests on a simple point: Lilo & Stitch is not a fairy tale, but a story rooted in a real place: a small Hawaiian island where real people live, with everyday routines, customs and struggles that drive the plot. In other words, for once, live actors actually seem to be interacting with more than just green screens. Far from being – as is often the case – the main attraction, special effects are kept to a minimum here, used mainly to bring Stitch, the living plush toy (and a dream merchandising product), and the fantasy creatures at the edge of the story to life.

A fake wedding at Disneyland, but a real pedophile fantasy

In the amateur video, the pink hues of a June dawn bathe the Sleeping Beauty Castle, the symbol of Disneyland Paris in Marne-la-Vallée, outside Paris. The longest day of the year, June 21, had just begun. It was 5 am. An assistant, dressed up and wearing a "Margot and Jack" bracelet, bustled around white, padded chairs. Flowers lined the aisle leading to the altar. A string quartet in gowns played. There was even a cake replica of the iconic Disney castle. The kitschy décor of this American-style wedding was shattered by the appearance of the would-be "groom," a 39-year-old "professionally made up to look completely different from himself," according to a statement from Jean-Baptiste Bladier, the prosecutor investigating the case, and by the 9-year-old girl, a Ukrainian national who had arrived in France two days earlier, and with whom the man was simulating a wedding. Surprised by what he saw, a 55-year-old Latvian man, paid €12,000 to play a role in the ceremony, alerted Disneyland Paris security, who in turn notified police at the Chessy station. Officers arrived on the scene and discovered a scene that the psychologist and researcher Nicolas Estano, of the Resource Center for Professionals Working with Sex Offenders at Ville Evrard Hospital, compared to a "pedophile fantasy."

'Ironheart' on Disney+: The young genius from the streets of Chicago

DISNEY+ – On demand – Series Marvel Studios is no factory. Superheroes are not assembly line products. It's better to think of Disney's subsidiary as an experimental farm, where teams of scientists tinker with genes and cross bloodlines to produce beings that resemble living creatures but exist solely to entertain consumers. The work has become more challenging: the conclusion of the Avengers-focused cycle and the studio's box office disappointments have slowed the pace of new superhero launches. Until now, this year's only notable revival was Daredevil. Here is the new arrival for the class of 2025: Riri Williams, who made her on-screen debut (though she has appeared in comic book form since 2016) in Black Panther. Wakanda Forever. She is a scientific prodigy, a streetwise kid from Chicago's South Side, an admirer of Tony Stark (she works to perfect the concept of smart metal armor) and a student at MIT in the opening scenes of the first episode. But Riri Williams is used to living on the margins, both of society and legality, and her small business selling exam results leads to her expulsion.

French police probe fake Disneyland 'marriage' with nine-year-old

Two people were held for questioning in the case, which initially caused alarm when staff alerted police on Saturday that it could have concerned an illegal child marriage. But investigators now believe that the so-called "marriage" was staged, with the girl's mother reportedly saying that she wanted her to feel like a Disney "princess" for the day. "The event turned out to be a staged event, with the guests themselves extras" invited to be part of the stunt, deputy prosecutor Alexandre Verney said. Advertisement "So it wasn't a wedding, but a staged wedding filmed with around a hundred extras. They hired Disneyland Paris, pretending it was a real wedding," he told AFP. Four people were arrested and taken into custody, and the questioning of two of them - suspected of fraud and money laundering - was extended on Saturday evening. They are the so-called "groom" who is believed to be behind the event, 22 years old and "presumed to be British", and a Latvian woman, 24, said a source close to the case. However, the other two people detained - a 41-year-old Ukrainian woman, and a 55-year-old Latvian man - were released. The investigations, including a medical examination of the nine-year-old girl, a Ukrainian national, found that "she had not been subjected to any violence or coercive acts," the prosecutor's office said. According to the Le Parisien daily, which first reported the incident, a man had several weeks previously hired the Disneyland Paris complex for a sum of €130,000 for several hours before it opened to the public. Staff were astonished when the nine-year-old appeared wearing high heels on Saturday morning, barely able to stand in the elaborate footwear, and they alerted the authorities, it said. Advertisement The paper said the man who organised the event had submitted false documents concerning his identity and Disneyland filed a complaint. Hundreds of extras were bussed in to play the part of the guests, it said, while the girl's mother told investigators she wanted to organise a "day worthy of a princess" for her daughter.
