Wimbledon fine 12 players as British star abuses staff
A total of 12 players have been fined for boorish behaviour at Wimbledon, with the largest punishment going to a British star

British doubles player Henry Patten has received the largest fine at Wimbledon to date. The 29 year old has been slapped with a £9,000 penalty for verbally abusing staff when they attempted to curtail his practice session.
The second heftiest fine of £4,400 was handed to Adrian Mannarino for unsportsmanlike behaviour during his second-round match against Valentin Royer. Despite winning that match, Mannarino was later defeated by Andrey Rublev in the third round.

Russian player Elena Pridankina was issued the third largest fine of £3,600, also for unsportsmanlike conduct, during her first-round doubles loss to Jelena Ostapenko and Hsieh Su-wei.

Four players were each fined £2,900: Zizou Bergs and Halley Baptiste for audible obscenities, Varvara Gracheva for racket or equipment abuse, and Anna Kalinskaya for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The final four players, Alex Bolt and Chloe Paquet for audible obscenities, Colton Smith for racket and equipment abuse, and Luca Van Assche for unsportsmanlike conduct, were each fined £1,500.
Wimbledon is now reclaiming significantly less prize money since Nick Kyrgios is not participating in the main draw. The Australian player claims to have paid over £400,000 in fines throughout his career.
"Look, I probably would have, in my entire career, man I've been hit with some big ones," Kyrgios admitted.

"I would say, I'd be approaching around 800 grand (Australian dollars) I reckon."
Kyrgios was slapped with a fine of £11,700 for breaching Wimbledon's stringent dress code in 2022 when he sported red Jordan trainers on Centre Court. Since then, he has advocated for the all-white dress code to be abolished.
"I think it'd be cool to mix it up. I think everyone should wear all black," Kyrgios suggested during an interview with talkSPORT.

He further argued that such a change could enhance the viewing experience, stating: "It would look super clean on the court and on TV. It would look amazing."

Russian minister ‘kills himself' after being sacked by Putin

A Russian government minister who was dismissed on Monday by President Putin has been found dead in an apparent suicide just hours after the Kremlin announced that he was being removed from his post. Roman Starovoit, who was sacked as Russian transport minister earlier on Monday, is reported to have shot himself with a handgun in his car near his home in the Odintsovo district near Moscow. It is unclear when he died. Andrei Kartapolov, the head of the Russian parliament's defence committee, said that Starovoit, 53, had died 'quite a while ago'. He did not give further details. Russian investigators said they were 'working at the scene to determine the circumstances' of death and that the leading theory was suicide. The Makarov pistol that Starovoit is said to have used to end his life was reportedly awarded to him by the Russian interior ministry in 2023.
