How much it costs to live in New York City: Indian Google techie breaks down ₹4 lakh monthly budget; ‘barely survival'
The video, posted by podcaster and creator Kushal Lodha, quickly caught attention for its brutally honest breakdown of urban living in one of the world's most expensive cities. Maitri, who works at Google, didn't sugarcoat it: rent alone costs her a whopping $3,000 (approximately ₹ 2.5 lakh) each month.
Add to that her daily expenses, including groceries, dining out, and weekend plans, which can cost another $1,000 to $2,000 ( ₹ 83,000 to ₹ 1.6 lakh). Commuting around the city? That adds another $100 to $200 to the tab.
All in, Maitri's monthly budget rounds out to $5,000 ( ₹ 4.1 lakh).
When asked about average salaries for software engineers in NYC, Maitri said compensation typically ranges between $1,50,000 and $2,00,000 a year, roughly ₹ 1.25 to ₹ 1.6 crore annually, depending on role and experience.
The reel sparked mixed reactions online. Some viewers praised Maitri's transparency, saying it offered a much-needed reality check for those dreaming of working abroad.
A user wrote, "Har jagah sirf package kitna milraha hai yehi sabh. Bhai aage badho."
Another user wrote, "Bhai, I like your content but this one lacks relevant insights. "Average package at Google" even for software engineer is a bit ambiguous unless level (or at least years of work exp) is mentioned. Besides it would be great to see insights around prodman/strat roles instead which are more relevant for MBA grads," another user wrote.
The third user commented, 'Love this collab!'
The fourth user asked on Instagram, "How much goes in the taxes?"
"1.6 Cr in NYC is barely survival," the fifth user commented.

Welfare of farmers, youth top priority,' PM Modi states amid trade tensions with U.S
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing growing trade friction with the United States, conveyed a strong and unwavering message: India will prioritize the welfare of its farmers, youth, and small industries above all. Against a backdrop of rising global economic instability and a proposed 25% tariff on Indian imports by the U.S., Modi underscored that India's farmers and small businesses remain central to the government's policy. According to Prime Minister Modi, 'Our farmers, our small-scale industries, the employment for youth — their interest is our top priority,' a statement delivered amidst escalating U.S. tariff threats. India's trade minister Piyush Goyal reiterated the same stance in parliament, saying India would not make trade concessions that harm its agricultural sector. In addition to defending domestic economic interests, Modi also called on citizens and businesses to support indigenous production by embracing the 'Vocal for Local' ethos. 'We should buy products made by Indians,' he said, urging everyone to put aside political differences to champion India-made goods. Amid rising tensions, economic analysts and insiders affirmed that most Indian exports will remain unaffected by U.S. measures, with any impact on GDP expected to be minimal, projected at under 0.2%. Modi concluded by reiterating that India is poised to become the world's third-largest economy, but to achieve that vision, the country must stay vigilant and resilient in protecting national interests, especially during turbulent global times.

US tariff hike puts Indian auto parts and tyre exporters at disadvantage: ICRA
The Indian automotive component and tyre industry could face significant headwinds following the United States' decision to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all Indian imports starting August 7, ratings agency ICRA has cautioned. With the US accounting for a substantial share — 27 per cent — of India's auto component exports and 17 per cent of tyre exports, the move puts domestic manufacturers at a strategic disadvantage compared to peers from countries like Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia, which enjoy lower or preferential tariff structures. 'The imposition of the tariff has raised concerns across India's automotive and tyre sectors, both of which have sizeable exposure to the US market,' ICRA noted in its analysis released on Saturday. The higher tariffs are expected to erode the competitiveness of Indian suppliers, particularly in segments such as off-highway vehicles and replacement tyres. Indian tyre makers, who earlier held a pricing advantage over Chinese exporters, may now lose ground to Southeast Asian rivals benefiting from better trade terms. What are the solutions? To mitigate the impact, ICRA expects Indian exporters to explore new geographies and double down on cost optimisation efforts. However, near-term margin pressures are likely, especially for firms with high dependence on US-bound shipments. India's auto components industry recorded a turnover of $80.2 billion (₹6.73 lakh crore) in FY25, registering a 10 per cent growth over the previous year. Exports during the same period rose by 8 per cent to $22.9 billion (₹1.92 lakh crore). Despite this growth, the new tariff regime threatens to slow momentum in the export-driven segments of the sector unless favourable trade negotiations or alternate market strategies are implemented quickly.

Reddit wants to take on Google, aims to become a search engine
Reddit is undoubtedly one of the most popular discussion forums worldwide is the go-to place for millions to get information about anything from AI to cooking recipes. In the last couple of months, the platform has signed deals with ChatGPT maker OpenAI and Google to share its user data, and now the company is reportedly gearing up to enter the search engine space. In its latest note to investors, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said that the company is now focusing on 'areas that will drive results for our most pressing needs', one of which involves 'making Reddit a go-to search engine.' Hoffman went on to say that Reddit is one of the few platforms on the internet that is 'positioned to become a true search destination' as it has knowledge and conversations of real people, something which cannot be found elsewhere. The platform, which has more than 70 million weekly users, is now looking to make search a 'central feature.' To achieve this, the company says it will be making Reddit Answers, a feature currently available in more than a dozen countries to everyone and will make the search box more visible. Launched in December 2023, Reddit Answers is an AI-powered feature that has grown from 1 million users in 2024 to 6 million weekly users in the last year. In a statement to TechCrunch, CEO Steve Huffman said, 'We're unifying those [Reddit search and Reddit Answers] into a single search experience, and we're gonna bring that front and center in the app. So, whether you're a new user opening the app for the first time or a returning user opening the app, that search box will be present immediately.' With low-quality content taking over the internet in the last few years, people around the world have been adding the word 'Reddit' at the end of their search query to get relevant results. But with Google now offering its very own AI mode that automatically summarises content from all over the internet, Reddit to looking to jump into action by offering a similar product.
