
Southwest Airlines sets a date for the end of open seating
The move ends more than half a century of open seating on the airline, a policy that has set it apart from rivals for decades — along with two free checked bags. Both things are changing as Southwest's leaders seek new revenue streams to keep up with more profitable rivals.
Southwest said in March that its host of initiatives would add $800 million to earnings before interest and taxes this year and $1.7 billion in 2026.
The airline first announced it would end its open seating a year ago, but it had yet to set a date.
The changes are part of Southwest's massive overhaul of its business model. The carrier in March also said it would start charging many customers to check bags and announced new fare types this spring. Top-tier customers are exempt from many of the new restrictions and fees.
Southwest used computer models and live tests to ensure the new policies wouldn't slow down boarding and would get planes back in the the money-making air quickly.
'We wanted to make sure that, as we designed a boarding construct that sort of paired well with assigned seating, that we were optimizing for efficiency, but also the second priority: balancing that with making sure that we're taking care of our most loyal customers, so tier members, cardholders and customers who buy our most premium products,' Stephanie Shafer Modi, managing director of fares and ancillary products at Southwest, told CNBC.
Come Jan. 27, the hallmarks of Southwest's open-seating policy — setting an alarm to secure a place in the boarding line, the A-B-C groups, the big stanchions marking off boarding order and the on-board scramble for a favorite seat — will be gone.
That all will be replaced by eight boarding groups, based on seat selection, status and other factors. The most loyal and biggest spenders will get on first, but seat location will determine boarding position. Here's the order:
The first two groups will include the top tiers of elite frequent flyers, and those with top classes of tickets.
Groups three through eight will be for 'Choice' and 'Basic' ticketholders depending on their seat location.
Credit card holders and Rapid Rewards credit card members will board no later than Group 5.
There will be two queues.
The airline didn't disclose prices for seat assignments as an add-on fee, which on rival airlines, can vary depending on route and demand. Access to some seats will depend on the type of fare, and Southwest will sell standard seats, preferred seats and extra-legroom seats.
Southwest has been busy reconfiguring its Boeing planes to include extra-legroom seating. About 200 aircraft are complete, or about 25% of the fleet, a spokesman said. While those seats aren't on sale yet, the airline has been selling earlier boarding to customers before their flight, which would increase their chances of getting extra-legroom seats.
Southwest customers have shown that sitting together is a priority, Shafer Modi told CNBC, while acknowledging that it will look different with the new boarding process.
'I think that if families want that sense of control, they have the optionality to pick their seats through … our existing products that we're selling,' she said. 'We will try to do our best to make sure that families are seated together no matter how they buy a ticket.'

Trump to hold trade talks with European Commission president as his Scotland visit continues
Donald Trump will meet the president of the European Commission on Sunday for trade talks as work gets under way on his five-day visit to Scotland. The US President arrived on Friday night and was then seen playing golf at his Trump Turnberry resort the following day. On Sunday he will meet European Commission Ursula von der Leyen for talks on the trading relationship between Europe and the US. It comes as both sides seek an agreement on tariff rates now that the White House's deadline to impose stiff tariff rates is looming. Leaving the White House on Friday, Trump said 'we have a 50-50 chance, maybe less than that, but a 50-50 chance of making a deal with the EU.' He said the deal would have to 'buy down' the currently scheduled tariff rate of 30% on the bloc of 27 member states. Later, von der Leyen posted on X that, 'Following a good call' with Trump, the pair had 'agreed to meet in Scotland on Sunday to discuss transatlantic trade relations, and how we can keep them strong.' The US and EU seemed close to reaching a deal earlier this month, but Trump instead threatened a 30% tariff rate on the bloc of nations. However, Trump's original deadline for beginning such tariffs has already passed, and is now delayed until at least Friday. Without an EU deal, the bloc said it was prepared to retaliate with tariffs on hundreds of American products, ranging from beef and auto parts to beer and Boeing airplanes. The talks come ahead of discussions with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on Monday, which are also expected to focus on the issue of trade. The UK and the US struck a trade deal recently, with discussions between the two men expected to focus on this – with reports suggesting Starmer will be looking for the US to cut the tariffs for British steel. Trump is also due to meet Scottish First Minister John Swinney. Speaking ahead of the talks, Swinney said it was his responsibility to 'raise global and humanitarian issues of significant importance, including the unimaginable suffering we are witnessing in Gaza' with the President. Saying he wanted to 'ensure Scotland's voice is heard at the highest levels of government across the world', Swinney added: 'That is exactly what I will do when I meet with President Trump during his time in Scotland.' On Tuesday, he'll be in Aberdeen, in northeast Scotland, where his family has another golf course and is opening a third next month. Trump and his son Eric are planning to help cut the ribbon on the new course, where public tee times starting in August are already on offer. On Saturday he was spotted playing a round at the famous Turnberry course, which he purchased back in 2014. A massive security operation was in place as the president played golf on the course. He drove his own golf buggy, but a heavy security presence saw Trump flanked by a fleet of similar vehicles. Even before he took to the course, police officers and military personnel could be seen searching the area around the Trump Turnberry resort – which has had a metal fence erected around it as part of heightened security measures. No protesters were seen while he was golfing on Saturday – but hundreds of people gathered in both Edinburgh and Aberdeen for demonstrations against his visit organised by the Stop Trump Coalition.

After getting divorced in 2018, Desiree, from Atlanta, Georgia, decided that she needed to earn some extra cash to provide for her two children. Using Google and YouTube, she was able to teach herself how to fix the vehicle, which she realised just needed a replacement throttle which set her back just £44. "I just fixed this vehicle with a $60 part, and I didn't have to pay anybody to do it", she said. Desiree went on to sell that first truck for £2977, meaning she made £2040 profit. "It was almost like a high. I wanted to keep doing it", she said. Side hustles in numbers Based on new research from Finder, an estimated 22.8 million Brits are using side hustles to top up their income. Among those aged 18-23, 68 percent have a side hustle in 2024. Those aged 24-42 aren't far behind, with 65 per cent having an additional source of income. Side hustles are less popular among older generations, with 40 percent of those aged 43-54 having one. Whereas 23 percent of people aged 55-73 and just 7 per cent of those aged 74 and over are earning extra cash this way. The mum now has 120,000 TikTok followers, and in 2021 launched a mobile repair service, where she would travel to people's houses and fix their vehicles. She found this to be much less stressful, as she didn't have to worry about whether the car was going to sell, and made exactly the same amount of money as the car flipping. Desiree decided to switch from flipping cars to being a mechanic, and her business grew so rapidly that she was able to hire a mechanic and rent a repair space in a shop for £297. A kind client then offered her a whopping £7500 loan, which enabled her to buy a larger space, and she now owns Crowns Corner Mechanics, which raked in £327,000 in 2024. She now gets to spend much more time with her family, and her kids now even help out at the shop.

Two injured after Southwest plane plummets to avoid potential collision
Two Southwest Airlines flight attendants are being treated for injuries after a passenger jet heading to Las Vegas from southern California took a dramatic plunge shortly after takeoff on Friday, the airline and passengers said. Southwest flight 1496, headed from Burbank to Las Vegas, received two alerts that made the plane climb and then descend, according to a statement from Southwest. Reported by ABC and according to flight trackers FlightRadar24 and AirNavRadar, the plane avoided a collision with a Hawker Hunter jet, currently registered to a 'Non-Citizen Corporation', according to FAA registration logs. Southwest said that the flight continued to Las Vegas, where it landed 'uneventfully', and that the airline is working with the FAA to 'further understand the circumstances of the event'. 'We are aware of an incident involving Southwest Airlines flight 1496. The FAA is in contact with Southwest and we are investigating. Ensuring the safety of everyone in the national airspace system remains our top priority,' the FAA said in a statement. A post on social media showed the path that the two planes took in a simulation video. The good news is your 737 got an automated alert, your crew did what they were supposed to do and so your aircraft didn't get dangerously close to the other (a Hawker Hunter jet fighter registered to a defense contractor). A passenger, Caitlin Burdi, likened the experience to the 'Tower of Terror' theme park ride during an interview with Fox News. 'About 10 minutes into the flight, we plummeted pretty far, and I looked around, and everyone was like, 'OK, that's normal,'' Burdi told Fox. 'Then, within two seconds, it felt like the ride Tower of Terror, where we fell 20 to 30 feet in the air. The screaming, it was terrifying. We really thought we were plummeting to a plane crash.' YouTube personality Jimmy Dore posted on social media from the flight. 'Myself and plenty of people flew out of their seats and bumped heads on ceiling, a flight attendant needed medical attention,' Dore wrote. 'Pilot said his collision warning went off and he needed to avoid plane coming at us.' This was at least the second near-miss for a midair collision in the US this week, after a Delta plane headed from Minneapolis to Minot, North Dakota, nearly collided with a B-52 bomber. In March, a passenger jet nearly collided with a military plane at Ronald Reagan Washington National airport, where a collision between an American Airlines flight and a military helicopter had killed at least 67 people just months before.
