Aizawl: The Kolasib district administration, along the Assam-Mizoram border, on Sunday took steps to clear vehicles from the most severely damaged sections of NH-306 and 06, ensuring repair work, which is set to be undertaken on a war footing by NHIDCL and PWD, can proceed without hindrance, reports HC Vanlalruata.
The govt plans to capitalise on a week-long suspension of commercial vehicle services to conduct critical repairs on the highways that serve as the state's lifeline, connecting it to the rest of the country via Assam.
A joint committee of 24 commercial vehicle owner and driver associations has announced that they will proceed with their planned 'holiday on operations' from Monday to Saturday. This measure is intended to give NHIDCL and the state govt a clear path for road repairs.

New rly under bridge to ease traffic at Darrah Nullah

Jaipur: Relief is finally in sight for commuters who endured years of traffic congestion at Darrah Nullah on the Kota–Jhalawar National Highway (NH-52). The Central govt granted administrative and financial approval for the construction of a new Railway Under Bridge (RUB) near Arch Bridge No. 148, between Kanwarpura and Darrah railway stations. The project, estimated to cost Rs 9.98 crore, will be executed by the West Central Railway as a deposit work. The RUB will be constructed at KM 297.7 on NH-52 and is expected to significantly ease traffic flow between Kota and Jhalawar. Construction is scheduled to begin shortly, with targeted completion within stipulated timeframe. The eight-km stretch through Darrah Nullah — a narrow, single-lane passage wedged between the broader four-lane highway — long posed a serious threat to commuters, with frequent accidents, prolonged traffic jams, and seasonal waterlogging. Rajesh Soni, a frequent traveller, said, "Traffic on this route increased as it connects Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Heavy vehicle movement is common, and traffic jams lasting up to 12 hours have been reported here." Despite the commencement of toll collection at Mandana and Bheed Mandi (Rs 165 and Rs 85, respectively), no structural improvements were made. Agencies including the NHAI, PWD, and the forest department continued shifting responsibility. Since the stretch falls within the Mukundra Tiger Reserve, the forest department raised objections to any major construction without proper clearance. A four-lane elevated road was earlier proposed but failed to gain approval .

'A stretch of around 30 km of NH10, between Sevoke and Chitrey, would have to be shut down from 8 pm on August 3 to 6 pm on August 6,' the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) issued an order on Sunday evening. The order has been issued by general manager of Siliguri NHIDCL Rahul Kumar Gupta. The order stated 'the damages have raised serious concerns about the safety of commuters, prompting authorities to act to prevent any mishaps.' Live Events The highway, which is often prone to natural disasters, connects Sikkim's capital Gangtok to West Bengal's Siliguri at the foothills. The closure of the highway is also expected to affect traffic to Kalimpong. The Kalimpong Police have asked small vehicles heading to Gangtok from Siliguri to take alternative routes, via Damdim-Gorubathan-Lava-Alagarah and Bagrakote-Lava-Alagarah. However, the movement of heavy vehicles between Siliguri and Gangtok has been stopped.

Delhi govt forms committees to draft new excise and electric vehicle policies

New Delhi: Delhi govt has constituted two separate ministerial committees to formulate a "transparent and socially secure" excise policy and an "effective and public-centric" electric vehicle policy. These committees will submit their reports to chief minister Rekha Gupta. The committee formed to create the excise policy will be headed by PWD minister Parvesh Verma, while the one on the EV policy will be chaired by home minister Ashish Sood. All other ministers in Gupta's cabinet will be members of both committees. The decision to form the panels was made in the cabinet meeting held last Tuesday, but the information was shared by the govt only this Monday. "Our govt is dedicated to the people of Delhi and is continuously making decisions in the public interest," CM Rekha Gupta said. Gupta earlier formed a committee under the chairmanship of chief secretary Dharmendra to deliberate upon various aspects of the liquor business in Delhi and even prepared a draft of the new policy. However, the govt decided to deliberate more on the issue and postponed the announcement of a new policy by nine months. Delhi govt also extended the current Electric Vehicle Policy until March 31, 2026, or until a new one is officially notified, whichever comes first, a few days ago. The extension was approved in a cabinet meeting chaired by the chief minister. Officials said the govt wanted more time to conduct public consultations before rolling out a revised, future-ready policy. The draft of the new policy is still under discussion and will involve inputs from citizens, industry players, environmental experts, academic institutions, and private stakeholders.
