Seven new illegal dumpsites found in Sepang

Muhamad Shah says enforcement officers saw lorries dumping rubbish illegally every week.
SEPANG Municipal Council (MPSepang) has recorded seven new illegal rubbish dumping sites in the municipality this year, bringing the total number of active sites to 13.
Six of the newly identified locations are in Dengkil, namely in Namtak, Batu 1, an area behind UiTM, and two in Bukit Damar and Cybersouth.
Other sites are in Pulau Meranti, Puchong, which falls under MPSepang's jurisdiction.
MPSepang deputy president Muhamad Shah Osmin said the Enforcement Department conducted periodic checks at hotspots and was able to catch some of the lorries dumping rubbish illegally every week.
However, he said, identifying and prosecuting the mastermind behind the illegal activity remained a major challenge due to the complexity of gathering sufficient evidence for legal action.
'So far, we have confiscated 50 lorries and issued 70 compounds this year, each carrying a maximum fine of RM2,000.
'The confiscated lorries are held for a minimum of seven days as part of punitive measures to deter future offences,' he said after the council full board meeting at Menara MPSepang in Cyberjaya.
Seven closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, he said, had also been installed at strategic hotspots to monitor the movement of the lorries.
Lorries caught on camera carrying out illegal dumping would be compounded, he said.
Muhamad Shah also said MPSepang had closed nine illegal dumping sites.
'We work with the Sepang Land and District Office to identify landowners and notify them of illegal dumping activities on their properties.
'Landowners are required to restore the land to its original condition once notified.
'Many claimed they were unaware of the activities but have since taken steps to stop them,' he said.
Muhamad Shah said landowners should be more proactive in monitoring their land left idle, by at least constructing perimeter fencing to prevent illegal dumping.
He also called on the public to report such activities to help the council address the problem.
Separately, Muhamad Shah said the MPSepang Selangor Local Draft Plan 2035 (Amendment) would be available for public viewing between July 1 and Aug 1 at several locations including Menara MPSepang in Cyberjaya and Sepang Land and District Office.
Several rezoning proposals have been included in the draft plan to support five flagship projects, including the KLIA Aeropolis development and making Cyberjaya a regional hub for high technology, he added.
Among the other projects are turning the southern part of Sepang into an eco-cultural tourist attraction, improving the land transportation system and facilitating the Sponge City concept to manage urban water resources more sustainably.
