A 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 interview as Russell Martin cites a 'mentality problem' at Rangers after their 1-1 draw ⬇️ pic.twitter.com/C5wznNbizZ — Sky Sports Scotland (@ScotlandSky) August 2, 2025
"We were lucky to get a point," he said, delivering his verdict on the result and performance. "Motherwell played great, we were nowhere near where we need to be and I'm extremely disappointed and hurt by that.
"They were braver than us, they were more aggressive than us.
"I have said to the players and been really honest with them and I'll be honest with you guys because it is what the supporters of this club deserve...
"There is a default at this football club and it is not one person's fault at all, the default is to revert to type when it is going really well everyone is all in, it is really good.
"When it is not going well you protect yourself a little bit and self-preservation stuff.
"You can't play for this club and enjoy the really good moments and then when it gets tough, 'Oh I'm not sure'.
"You have to be all in all the time. We had too many on the pitch today that wanted to do what they wanted to do.
"If you are playing with real intensity and courage in the position that we coach you in, no problem. When you just want to jog around and do what you want to do, there's a big problem.
"Some of them have to drop their ego.
"I will look at us tactically and accept my responsibility in it but today is not really tactical, it's a mentality problem.
"We got more than what we deserved, actually."
Quizzed on how to fix the mentality matter, he added: "Well, we work out who really wants to be all in and who doesn't. Lyall Cameron comes in, did great because he listens and wants to run really hard for the team.
"And I said to some of the guys in there, Cyriel is the only one we have actually had a bid for and interest in. And he comes on and he runs so hard, on Wednesday night and today.
"Some of them need to have a look at him and set that example.
"There will be people left behind, if they don't want to come, they will be left behind because they need to understand what playing for this football club will take and what it means and not just when it is having a nice time.
"The European games speak for themselves; they find a way to get up for it. Hopefully, it is down to a bit of information as well and then today the lethargy and all that stuff is not acceptable.
"I am surprised but I am more angry than surprised."

He continued: "There is no excuse. I know what we are coming into and I understand the fan frustration.
"We are only one game in and it is a work in progress but we need to work out quickly who really wants to listen, who will really fihgt, who will really run when the going gets tough.
"But Europe is not an excuse, this club demands to play in Europe. We have qualified for that so we are going to be playing in Europe a lot and we are going to have games after European games a lot and we have to manage them much better than today."
Touching on the possibility of the result leading to accelerated transfer business, he said: "We need some help for sure, I don't think that has changed also we need to maximise what we have in the building.
"We haven't had a huge amount of games, some of them played thier first 90 minutes on Wednesday but we have to work out quickly who really wants to play proeprly in the way that we want to."

Russell Martin's post-Motherwell Rangers criticism came from ‘love and care'
The Gers boss hit out following the William Hill Premiership opener at Fir Park, questioning mentality, speaking about 'egos' and accusing some of 'self-preservation'. Martin was speaking again at the club's training ground ahead of the first leg of the Champions League third qualifier against Czech side Viktoria Plzen at Ibrox on Tuesday night, where a play-off tie against Austrian outfit Salzburg or Club Brugge of Belgium awaits the winners. 'I think if they know us by now as a group of coaches that it all comes from a place of love and care for them,' said the Gers boss, who replied 'hopefully he will be in it, we will wait and see', when asked if new signing Oliver Antman, the Finland winger who joined from Go Ahead Eagles on Monday, will be included in the squad. 'We are here, myself, Gilly (Matt Gill, assistant), the coaches, ultimately for the players. 🎙️ Russell Martin spoke to the media ahead of Tuesday's match against Viktoria Plzeň. — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) August 4, 2025 'We're here to win football matches, but as coaches day to day, we are here to help the players. 'That's our job, to help them win, to help them develop, to help them improve and understand why, to help them enjoy playing for a club like this, because I don't think too many of them have enjoyed it enough to play for this amazing football club, because it's not always easy. 'I don't come out and say that because I want to be ruthless and all that stuff. 'If they know me as a person, the people who do know me, they know it comes from a place of love and to help them and to want them to be better. 'So I think when it comes from that place, whatever is said and if they understand that, then we'll always have a really honest and good conversation about it. 'I hope they understand who we are by now and what we're here to do, and I really believe they're really trying. 'So they're good people, but the default to try and protect yourself when it gets tough, we need to just shed that a little bit.' ✍️ We are today delighted to announce the signing of Finnish international Oliver Antman on a four-year-deal. — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) August 4, 2025 Martin confirmed that Thelo Aasgaard and Hamza Igamane will again miss out through fitness issues while it is not clear if Mikey Moore, the 17-year-old attacker who has signed on loan from Tottenham, will receive international clearance in time to be part of the squad. On the task facing his side, Martin said: 'The game is going to be tough. 'They are really powerful, really strong, play forward quickly, run forward quickly. 'It's a really different test to the Panathinaikos one and it is a really interesting and exciting one for us. 'They have strength in certain areas, but we have to try and turn the game, especially at Ibrox, into the game that we want, move the ball quickly, better than we did the other day. 'We have to really be up for the fight against these guys but I am looking forward to it.'

Kieron Bowie's eyebrow-raising Hibs stat and his response to Scotland number nine question

It might be a surprising detail to dwell on following his two-goal, match-winning performance against Dundee on Sunday. Kieron Bowie seemed almost as delighted by the fact he finished the game, thereby completing his first 90 minutes for Hibs, as he was by the brace, his second for the club (and second versus Dundee). Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad With the first anniversary of him joining Hibs set to fall this Friday, he was asked afterwards when he had last played a full 90 minutes. Northampton, he replied, the club he was on loan at from Fulham for a couple of seasons. Hibs striker Kieron Bowie at full time after his double secured a 2-0 win over Dundee. (Photo by Mark Scates / SNS Group) | SNS Group Further investigation reveals that it seems to have been the penultimate game of the 2023-24 season in a home 2-1 loss to Exeter City. Quite some time ago, in other words. Injury has of course accounted for this eyebrow-raising statistic as has larger squads and more substitutes as well as increased knowledge of sports conditioning, with managers less inclined to play players into the ground. Bowie sustained a hamstring injury while on Scotland Under-21 duty last Autumn. He did not reappear until January, when he helped his side revive their season and made his international debut for the senior side against Liechtenstein in June. Given the latter development, it was important that he hit the ground running this season while demonstrating that he is in good enough physical condition to last an entire match, particularly having played 80 minutes of Hibs' heartbreaking European defeat against Midtjylland last Thursday. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He was one of ten players asked to 'go again' by manager David Gray against Dundee, which some found surprising given the options on the bench. Bowie was delighted to be named in the first XI twice in such quick succession (he also started in the first leg) having found starts hard to come by last season, even when fit. 'If the manager wants to play me, obviously I'm going to play,' he said. 'I'm not going to say, 'No, I don't want to play'. I played 90 today, which is my first 90 for the club, so I'm glad to be able to do that.' Gray is not a cruel man. He was conscious that Bowie was gunning for a hat-trick and had been since shortly after the half hour mark of a game where Hibs looked to be toying with their much-changed, nervous looking hosts. Bowie will rarely get a better chance to claim a first career treble and Gray's decision to leave him on seemed to be in recognition of this, despite the prospect of another long evening against Partizan Belgrade on Thursday in a Conference League qualifier. Bowie appreciated the gesture. 'I think it was to try to get my hat trick,' he said. 'But I was happy enough with two in the end.' (Photo by) | Getty Images This certainly seemed the case when, with time running out, Bowie was seen running with the ball into the corner to protect the one-goal lead when an attack might have been on. There will be other opportunities. 'I scored six goals last season in a limited number of games, so I'm just trying to score as many as I can this season,' he said. 'Obviously, towards the end of the season I started a few more games, but it was nowhere near enough as I wanted. But I feel like now I'm fit enough and I'm strong enough that I can go out there week in, week out and play 90 minutes. That's definitely a big thing.' He certainly proved this - and Steve Clarke should take note - on Sunday. The Scotland manager will have started to sift through names before naming his squad for the vital opening World Cup qualifiers against Denmark and Belarus at the start of next month. Bowie remains hopeful, as he ought to be after breaking into the squad at the end of last season. The 22-year-old is big and strong and knows where the goal is. He is just what Scotland need at this time although he will face tougher examinations than Dundee could present at the weekend. Even in training, that's probably been the case. He revealed that he regularly quizzes Hibs centre halves about playing against No. 9s. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I speak to the defenders that we have at the club, and they say what they don't like playing against,' Bowie reports. He wants to make himself as awkward as possible to play against. A goal or two or maybe even that elusive hat trick in Belgrade later this week would reinforce what already looks like a good claim for inclusion in Clarke's next squad.
