WHEN Jane Bolton booked a hire car for a week-long girls' holiday in the French Alps with an old friend, she paid £320 in advance.
But when she got to the Europcar pick-up desk in Geneva, Switzerland - the nearest airport to her holiday destination - she was charged an extra £10 per day because she was going to drive the car a few miles over the border into France.

It meant an extra £70 fee she wasn't expecting.
'It was really annoying and put me a bad mood at the start of the trip,' says Jane, 54.
'It wasn't a huge amount but it all comes out of the holiday budget – that could have paid for a meal out.'
She's far from the only person to have been stung.

Seven out of 10 car renters say they have ended up paying hidden costs, according to iCarhireinsurance.com.

TAKE PHOTOS FIRST
James McNeil, director of UK-based car leasing company Ready2Lease, says checking for damages should be the 'number one' thing you do to avoid extra charges - no matter how tired you are from travelling when you pick up the car.
'Look around the car and highlight anything that could even potentially be considered to be damage, even tiny scratches,' he says.

"Make sure you take photos or videos – if you do this on a smartphone they will be timestamped to prove the damage occurred before you drove it."
You should also take a picture showing the mileage and fuel gauge on your pick-up and return, in case you are later challenged on this.

BEWARE SNEAKY TACTICS
Before you load the car with your suitcase, lift the carpet in the boot and take a picture of the spare tyre or puncture repair kit – there have been reports of travellers getting huge fines for 'missing' kits and tyres.
Some cheaper car hire companies have been accused of using hidden existing damages like broken locks and scratches underneath the car to trick customers into paying fines.

It's also worth trying the physical key in all the locks (not just using the key remote) to check for damaged locks – take a video to prove it – and take pictures under the bumpers too.
And brush down seats and shake out car mats before you return the car - taking pictures too - to avoid 'extra cleaning' charges.
READ THE T&Cs
They are easy to skip - but they can include hidden costs. For example, extra charges for drivers over 70 or under 25, or for exceeding a set mileage limit.
Jane, who is a product director for ski holiday firm Erna Low, says she might not have been caught out by the cross-border charge on her trip if she had read the terms closely.

BRING YOUR OWN
Hiring a child's car seat for a week costs an average of £55, while a sat nav is £69, according to iCarhireinsurance.com.
Avoid this by bringing your own. Even budget lines - like easyJet and Ryanair - allow you to check in car-seats for free for under 12s.
You can buy car seat travel bags from around £15 on Amazon to keep them safe in transit.
BUY WAIVERS SEPARATELY
Car hire firms often use pressure-selling tactics to push customers into buying expensive excess waivers at the pick-up desk.

An excess waiver covers the high fees car hire companies charge in the case of any damages.
These fees can be as much as €250 (£212) for a small scratch on a car door, says research by Zest Car Hire.
But buying an excess waiver at the rental desk can add up to an extra £200 to a week's car hire.
'It's always worth having an excess waiver but never buy it from the car hire company,' adds McNeil.

Instead, experts at Which? recommend buying a waiver in advance.
The best value policies are annual - covering multiple trips each year - and typically cost between £37 and £59.
BRING A CREDIT CARD
Firms want to keep your details on file just in case you damage the vehicle or don't bring it back, in which case they can charge your card.
But it means you could have to pay admin fees of up to £150 if you don't have one when you pick up the car.

FILL UP BEFORE THE AIRPORT
Airport petrol stations charge far more than regular ones, so top up before you arrive.
You can use an app like Google Maps (while you're on the hotel WiFi) to research your route ahead of time.
Most fuel gauges will show the tank as full even if you have driven for a few miles. But make sure it is still showing as full when you return the car or you could be charged a hefty admin fee and high fuel costs to refill it.
PAY IN ADVANCE
Not only does it cost around £30-50 more to pay for your booked car hire at the airport, but your booking could get cancelled if you haven't paid in advance, warns Which? Travel.

Most reputable companies will allow you to cancel for free if your plans change.
'The best prices are almost always available at least six months in advance, so don't hold out in case prices drop – they probably won't,' says McNeil.
Martin Lewis fan saves £900 booking car hire ahead
A Martin Lewis fan previously revealed how he saved £900 on his holiday car hire by booking ahead.
The jet setter said he cancelled his car hire then re-booked after finding a lower quote closer to departure time.
He explained: "We booked for our three-week summer holiday, then discovered the price had dropped dramatically.
"We had free cancellation, so we did that then rebooked, saving £742.
"A couple of weeks later the price dropped further, so we did it again, saving a further £184, a total saving of £926."

Chancellor's attempt to intervene in car finance scandal branded ‘disgraceful'
Rachel Reeves' efforts to intervene in the supreme court case on the car finance scandal were 'unprecedented and disgraceful' and send a 'really bad message' to consumers that the government is willing to defend wrongdoing by banks, Treasury committee member and Lib Dem MP Bobby Dean has said. While the supreme court largely sided with finance companies on Friday – helping lenders avoid a £44bn compensation bill – Dean said the chancellor had gone too far to show she was on the side of business. That included a controversial bid to intervene in the supreme court hearing in January, in which she urged judges to avoid handing 'windfall' compensation to borrowers. That attempt was ultimately rejected. 'I thought it was pretty unprecedented and pretty disgraceful,' said Dean, who sits on an influential parliamentary committee which scrutinises City firms, regulators and the Treasury. The chancellor had also been considering overruling the supreme court's decision with retrospective legislation, to help save lenders billions of pounds, in the event that it upheld the entirety of October's court of appeal ruling, the Guardian revealed last week. 'What message does it send to consumers that the industry can do wrong, the courts can support the claim that they've done something wrong, but the government is ready to intervene and defend the industry that's done wrong, instead of defending the consumer? I think that's a really bad message to put out,' Dean said. 'I feel like this government sometimes is too keen to demonstrate it is on the side of business, and is sometimes not understanding the rights of consumer,' he added. Reeves intervention efforts followed intensive lobbying by the car loan industry, which feared that the supreme court would uphold last October's shock ruling by the appeal court. That October ruling suggested commission payments paid by lenders to car dealers were unlawful, unless explicitly disclosed to borrowers. It could have opened the door to billions of pounds of compensation claims against companies including Lloyds Banking Group, Santander UK, Barclays and Close Brothers, and result in a redress scheme that rivalled the £50bn payment protection insurance saga. Lobby group the Financing and Leasing Association (FLA) – which represents car lenders – had warned the government that a big compensation bill could push some lenders into failure, while others would offer fewer or more expensive loans to claw back their losses. That could restrict options for borrowers who relied on credit. City bosses were also warning the Treasury that ongoing uncertainty over the scandal was deterring international investment in the finance industry, and was therefore putting the UK's economic growth at risk The FLA's head of motor finance Adrian Dally said that the lobby group was 'pleased' with the supreme court's ruling, and felt its concerns had been heard by Treasury and regulators. He confirmed the FLA had been speaking with the Treasury nearly every week in the wake of the court of appeal ruling in October, including about its concerns on the car finance case. However, he rejected suggestions the Treasury had prioritised the industry over consumers. 'We absolutely disagree with that because, ultimately, this [car finance] industry is a vital part of the nation's infrastructure, and enables millions of people to get to work, to get to school, and that was put at risk by these court cases. And ultimately, we believe the industry's interests and the consumers' interests are aligned on this.' 'Obviously, the best industry is one where these redress systems are not needed in the first place, because people play by the rules.' The Financial Conduct Authority is due to confirm whether or not it will press ahead with a compensation scheme before the stock markets open on Monday morning. A Treasury spokesperson said: 'It is vital that consumers have access to motor finance to enable them to spread the cost of a vehicle in a way that is manageable and affordable. 'We respect this judgment from the supreme court, and we are working with regulators and industry to understand the impact for both firms and consumers. 'We recognise the issues this court case has highlighted, and we are already taking forward significant changes to the Financial Ombudsman Service and the Consumer Credit Act.'

A man will begin an attempt to ride every rollercoaster in the UK in the space of just over two Stokes, 36, intends to ride 120 coasters across 32 theme parks in 16 days, starting at Brighton Palace Pier in his home town and ending at Thorpe hopes to complete eight rides at four parks on the first day and has secured permission to film at many of the sites for his social media Stokes said he has ridden more than 100 rollercoasters in about 25 different theme parks across 10 countries but has not ridden many in the UK, adding: "So I just thought, why not?". He said his map includes every rollercoaster classed as a thrill or extreme, to avoid family and children's rides and a number of venues have offered him free tickets."As far as I know, I think I'll be the first person to do it – the only person mad enough to do it," he said. Mr Stokes previously worked at Google but said he left to have "more variety" in his work. He set up a technology training business before launching his YouTube channel, where he posts thrill-seeking videos, which he says "really resonate" with his said: "I think people want to go out and have fun and I think that often we are too scared to get out and just do the things that we love, especially as adults."

A BUSY UK motorway which is used by 130,000 drivers a day has been closed for the entire weekend, causing chaos for airport and port travellers. Motorists heading for Belfast City Airport or the port have been told to add extra time for their journeys as one of the city's main roads has been shut. 2 Friday saw the closure of the eastbound carriageway of the M3 Lagan Bridge from Nelson Street on-slip to Dee Street. It is due to re-open at 6am on Monday. The closure is one of two weekend's worth of disruption on the road, which is undergoing a £400,000 maintenance scheme to replace bridge bearings. The westbound carriageway, from Bridge End to the M2 Foreshore, will be closed to traffic from 9pm on August 15 until 6am on August 18. Northern Ireland 's Department for Infrastructure (DfI) warned delays were 'inevitable' but added the works had been planned to minimise disruption. Traffic heading eastwards on the M3 over the Lagan Bridge will be affected by the current closure. The road will be closed between the M2 and Dee Street, with traffic being diverted off at the Nelson Street off-slip. There will also be no access to the bridge from Nelson Street on-slip. A diversion route is in place which follows: Nelson Street A2 Great Patrick Street A2 Dunbar Link Waring Street Donegall Quay Middlepath Street A2 Eastbound Middlepath Street on-slip Major motorway closed after lorry bursts into flames as drivers face hour-long delays and 7 miles of congestion The news comes after huge delays were reported on the M54 following a horror crash involving a number of vehicles. Two lanes were shut eastbound between Junction 2 for Wolverhampton and Junction 1 for Featherstone following a serious collision. Emergency services were called to the incident at around 2pm on Friday, where four people are thought to have been injured. A female passenger and male driver in one of the cars were rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich, where they are being treated for serious injuries. A child and lorry driver were also taken to hospital for minor injuries. While at the end of last month, the M6 northbound in Warwickshire was closed between J3A for Coleshill and J4 for the M42, after a lorry caught on fire. 2
