UDA empowers young talents in bowling through CSR initiative

The Star3 days ago
LEADING property development and asset management company UDA Holdings Bhd, continues to strengthen its commitment to community development through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative 'UDA Cares: Building Communities, Producing Champions'.
UDA chairman Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini, said: 'Recognising that participation in bowling involves high costs, and driven by the intention to ensure that no young talent is left behind due to financial constraints, this programme was initiated to provide access and opportunities for students from low-income families to explore and develop their talents in the sport.'
'Bowling often excludes young talents – particularly those from the B40 group – due to its high participation costs.
'UDA believes that within this group lies immense potential that can be nurtured into champions if given the space, opportunity, guidance and support,' he added.
'Through strategic collaboration between the public and private sectors, UDA sees this programme as a platform to elevate bowling as a holistic development avenue for youth, instilling character, discipline and sportsmanship.'
The 'UDA Cares: Building Communities, Producing Champions' CSR programme began in February 2025, starting with initial meetings with relevant agencies to ensure smooth implementation with significant impact.
The participant selection session was held on June 10 and 11 involving 120 students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Kinta, SJK (T) Kampung Simee, SK Cator Avenue and SJK (C) Chung Tack Simee.
From this pool, 30 promising students were selected and are currently undergoing an intensive 16-week training programme from June 16 to Oct 6, 2025.
Mohd Annuar added that the 16-week training is led by Syaidatul Afifah Badrul Hamidi, a former national bowler from Ipoh.
'With Syaidatul Afifah as the head coach and two other local professional coaches on the team, we hope to unlock the participants' full potential and achieve the programme's core goal – to produce quality, competitive champions,' he said.
A total of 30 promising students are currently undergoing a 16-week intensive training programme under the guidance of former national bowler Syaidatul Afifah Badrul Hamidi.
He also noted that the selection of Angsana Ipoh Mall as the official venue was a strategic move to reinforce the role of UDA-owned commercial centres in community empowerment, in line with the brand's values of L.I.F.E.— Legacy, Integrated, Finesse and Enrich.
'Angsana Ipoh Mall is more than a shopping destination – it is an inclusive community hub that reflects UDA's mission of promoting entrepreneurship in urban areas.
'The presence of Lite Superbowl JB9 aligns with our efforts to revitalise the bowling centre at Angsana Ipoh Mall, which was once a popular attraction,' he said.
Mohd Annuar also extended his appreciation to strategic partners whose roles were crucial to the success of this CSR programme, underscoring UDA's ongoing commitment to sustainable social change and sports development.
To ensure the programme's success, UDA collaborated with the Perak State Education Department (JPN), Perak Youth and Sports Department (JBS), Perak State Sports Council (MSN), Yayasan Perak, and private sector supporters such as Perak Transit Berhad and FND Empire Sdn Bhd (operator of Lite Superbowl JB9 at Angsana Ipoh Mall).
Each agency played a vital role by contributing logistics, resources, manpower and expertise.
JPN Perak coordinated student participation and attendance, while Yayasan Perak sponsored training attire for the 30 selected students to encourage active involvement.
Perak Transit Berhad provided free transportation for students and accompanying teachers. FND Empire Sdn Bhd – a business operating in a UDA property – provided the facilities and training support at Lite Superbowl JB9.
JBS Perak and MSN Perak were tasked with identifying young talents with potential to be developed further.
The programme's finale will be held on Oct 12 in Ipoh, featuring the grand finals and official launch ceremony in conjunction with National Sports Day and the UDA Carnival 2025.

Perlis entrepreneurs use TikTok, digital skills learned at Nadi centres to boost sales and reach customers nationwide

PADANG BESAR, Aug 2 — The National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) is not only helping to bridge the digital divide between rural and urban communities, but is also empowering entrepreneurs to boost their income by equipping them with the skills to manage social media platforms effectively. Two Perlis-based entrepreneurs interviewed by Bernama said Nadi had been instrumental in helping them master digital marketing techniques and other business-related skills. One of them, 30-year-old Nurul Sakinah Ikhsan from Felda Rimba Mas, who has been selling frozen corn dogs and a premium 'corn dough' batter mix since 2023, said she learned how to use TikTok's 'yellow bag' feature at a course organised by Nadi Felda Rimba Mas last year. 'In August 2024, I activated the TikTok yellow bag feature for my business, 'Dapur Maksu', to sell my corn dough batter mix. To my surprise, within four months, by December, sales had increased significantly,' she said. Nurul Sakinah, who produces various types of frozen corn dogs, added that TikTok is not only a digital marketing platform but also helps her reach a wider audience by motivating her to hone her social media skills. 'In the 'yellow bag', I only sell the corn dough batter mix for RM15.90 per pack, which can be shipped nationwide. As for the frozen corn dog, most customers come directly to my place in Felda Rimba Mas after seeing it on TikTok. 'I've had customers come all the way from Pahang and Melaka to buy the frozen corn dogs, which I sell for RM1 each. I can post it if they insist, as it can last up to three days, but they will have to bear any risk of damage,' she said. Nurul Sakinah, who has a Diploma in Hotel Management, said Nadi Felda Rimba Mas also helped design stickers for her corn dough batter mix packaging. 'Nadi services are very helpful for young entrepreneurs like me. They provide the right guidance and training to market our products, and help generate ideas to improve our business,' she said. Meanwhile, Najwa Azhar, 33, who runs the Mama Nory cake and bakery in Kangar, said a multimedia course by Nadi PPR Seri Sena in 2019 taught her creative and effective online marketing techniques to promote her products. 'I've known about Nadi since 2018, and through its course, I learned how to take and edit product photos to make them more visually appealing for promotion on Facebook and Instagram. 'It has made a big difference in attracting customers. I noticed a real change in how they responded to my social media posts,' she said. Najwa, who has been running her business with her mother, Norida Ismail, 68, since 2015, said these skills were especially valuable during the COVID-19 pandemic and Movement Control Order. 'Nadi PPR Seri Sena still keeps in touch with me. Sometimes their representatives visit my shop, and we exchange ideas. They also offer other courses, but I haven't been able to attend due to time constraints. The only other course I've attended was an online cooking class,' she added. Najwa, who holds a Bachelor's Degree in Management Mathematics, said Nadi is one of the best reference centres for helping young people start their business through digital marketing. Nadi is an initiative by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) under the Universal Service Provision programme. More information may be obtained at its official website It aims to provide shared internet access to communities, particularly in rural areas, and to bridge digital, knowledge and socio-economic gaps. — Bernama

Musk's X accuses Britain of online safety ‘overreach'

PARIS: Elon Musk-owned social network X on Friday accused Britain's government of 'overreach' with a new law designed to protect children from harmful online content such as pornography. The Online Safety Act's 'laudable intentions are at risk of being overshadowed by the breadth of its regulatory reach,' X said in a post to its Global Government Affairs account. 'A plan ostensibly intended to keep children safe is at risk of seriously infringing on the public's right to free expression,' it added, arguing that the impact 'shows what happens when oversight becomes overreach'. Beyond the law, X criticised a separate new code of conduct for online platforms as 'parallel and duplicative' as well questioning the free-speech impact of a new police unit tasked with monitoring social media. The social network nevertheless last week introduced formal systems for age verification in response to the British law as well as new rules in Ireland and the wider European Union. Its options range from estimating the age of a user based on the date their account was created or their email address, to requesting a selfie whose age would be determined by artificial intelligence, or uploading an official ID document. Media regulator Ofcom says such age checks -- required since July 25 -- must be 'technically accurate, robust, reliable and fair'. Platforms failing to comply risk fines of up to 18 million pounds ($24 million) or 10 percent of their global revenue -- whichever is larger. Serious infringers could be blocked from British territory. The fight over age verification to access sensitive content in Britain echoes months of debate in France over new rules requiring pornography sites to verify users' ages -- a step also required by many US states. While hailed by child safety campaigners, opponents say such requirements risk compromising legitimate users' privacy -- or even exposing them to scams such as identity theft if the personal details used to verify their age were to be hacked. Many people resort to virtual private networks (VPNs) to get around territorial restrictions on access to online content. The most popular free apps on Apple's UK download store since last week have been VPNs, with one, Proton, reporting earlier this week a 1,800 percent rise in downloads, according to British media. - AFP
