Police were clueless about the thieves till late Tuesday.
Police commissioner Mohit Agrawal visited the mahant's residence on Tuesday afternoon and inspected the house located at Tulsi Ghat. Agrawal said 11 teams, including special operation group and surveillance cell, were engaged for early resolution of the case. The teams are collecting evidence, analysing CCTV footage and questioning suspected persons.
The CP added that all necessary measures were being initiated to ensure early arrest of persons involved and recovery of the stolen items.
The mahant returned home from Delhi on Monday and found doors of his house open, cupboards in his rooms broken open and cash and valuables missing. After taking stock of the articles, he estimated that Rs 3 lakh cash and jewellery, mostly parental and of antique value, worth over Rs 1 crore, had been stolen.

When CCTV footage was checked, two masked young men were noticed entering with bags in the afternoon and later leaving. Police held some persons for questioning following the initial investigation.
Officials suspected involvement of a person familiar with the mahant's house, as the theft was executed at a time when his wife Abha Mishra was being treated for her ailment in Delhi, and family members were travelling frequently.
It is suspected that the thief did not face any problem in opening the cupboards, in which, cash collected as offerings at the temple and the jewellery were kept.
It also came to light that a few days ago, a locked box in a room on the first floor of the house was broken into, but since it was empty, no police report was filed. In 2010, a manuscript written by Tulsidas was stolen from Tulsi Ghat but was later recovered by police.

Retired TCS employee duped of Rs 3 crore by share trading fraudsters
Mumbai: A 58-year-old retired TCS executive lodged a complaint after being duped of almost Rs 3 crore from cyber fraudsters in an online scam. Impersonating officials of a reputed share trading platform, the fraudsters lured him twice and duped him of Rs 2.6 crore. The victim, a resident of Navroz Bagh in Lalbaug, detailed how he was lured through deceptive advertisements on Facebook and tricked over a span of two months. According to the complaint, the victim, who dabbled in stock trading for the past five years, came across an advertisement for "Kuvera Finance" while browsing Facebook on June 10. On clicking the link, he was added to a WhatsApp group named "K21 - Kuvera Appha Club - Learn & Grow Your Wealth." The group was allegedly moderated by Rutuja Lad, who claimed to be a manager at Kuvera Finance, and Neelabh Sanyal, who posed as an investment advisor. Under their guidance, he began transferring funds into various bank accounts, which included names like Sweet and Salt, Yash Traders, Axiopay Infotech Pvt. Ltd, and Sahil Enterprises, among others. Over a period of weeks, he was duped into transferring Rs 56.2 lakh under the pretext of stock investments that were displayed as virtual profits on fake trading apps. In a parallel operation, the victim encountered another fraudulent scheme through a Facebook advertisement for UTI AMC. This led him to a WhatsApp group named "UTI Capital Storm," where individuals identified as Sanya Kapoor and Imtaiazur Rahman introduced themselves as managers of UTI Mutual Fund. They used similar tactics, guiding the victim to invest by sending funds to accounts under names like Prudent Services Ltd, A.K. Traders, Harish Kumar, Sri Kalai Enterprise, Brightview Technologies, Hasan Creation, and Prince Corporation. Between June 16 and July 29, the victim transferred an additional Rs 2 crore to these accounts. The fraudsters repeatedly showed inflated profits on virtual dashboards but refused to allow withdrawals, citing fabricated "processing fees." When the victim attempted to withdraw his investments on July 29, the accused demanded a 5% payment on the invested sum. Sensing foul play, the victim attempted to contact the accused, but they became unresponsive. Realising he was cheated, the victim immediately filed complaints with the 1930 Cyber Helpline, an FIR was lodged against Rutuja Lad, Neelabh Sanyal, Sanya Kapoor, and Imtaiazur Rahman—and lists multiple bank account holders used as conduits for the scam. These accounts spanned across several banks. The complainant has submitted screenshots of WhatsApp chats, payment details, and other evidence to assist in the investigation. Authorities suspect that the scam is part of a larger pan-India racket involving mule accounts and international operatives. A senior officer from the cyber cell said, "We are tracing the digital footprint of the accused and are in touch with the respective banks to freeze the accounts. Preliminary investigations indicate the involvement of a well-organised cyber syndicate."

Seer forced to quit Chamarajanagar mutt over Muslim roots
Mysuru: A 22-year-old seer was forced to quit a mutt at Gundlupet taluka in Chamarajanagar district on Sunday after a section of villagers objected to his role, citing his religious status as a Muslim prior to taking Basava Deeksha. Nijalinga Swamiji, 22, had taken 'deeksha' five years ago and was named Nijalinga Swamiji. He had joined the year-old mutt as its new seer a-month-and-a-half ago. However, he was forced to quit after his status as a Muslim before taking Basava Deeksha came to light, with some devotees alleging that he had not informed them about his religion by birth during anointment. The seer in question, though, told TOI everyone knew about his pre- 'deeksha' religion as he never hid it. Chamarajanagar SP BT Kavita said no police complaint was registered in connection with the incident. The Swamiji, who hails from Kalaburagi district, is an ardent follower of 'vachanas' and 'sharanas'. After taking 'deeksha', he was involved in the propagation of 'vachanas' across the state. "One of the devotees at the mutt approached my guru to send a seer to the mutt, and in keeping with the Guru's wish, I joined. Ex-SSP & DSP among 5 cops jailed till death in 1993 Tarn Taran fake encounter case
Mohali: A special CBI court on Monday sentenced five former Punjab Police officials — including an SSP and DSP —to be jailed till death for the abduction, torture, and staged killing of seven innocent persons in 1993, three of whom were Special Police Officers (SPOs). The court said only their age had stopped them from going to the gallows but they deserved no leniency as their conduct was "morally bankrupt and profoundly inhumane". All the convicts are between 66 and 80 years of age, and one is wheelchair-bound. The verdict was pronounced by special CBI judge Baljinder Singh Sra, who also imposed a fine of Rs 3.5 lakh on each convict, amounting to a total of Rs 17.5 lakh, which will be distributed equally among the kin of the seven victims, said CBI public prosecutor Anmol Narang. Those convicted include former SSP Bhupinderjit Singh, former DSP Davinder Singh, ex-inspector Suba Singh, and ASIs Gulbarg Singh and Raghbir Singh. They were sentenced under various sections of IPC, including murder, criminal conspiracy, causing disappearance of evidence, and fabricating records. The convicts had filed mercy pleas, citing old age and health issues, but the court rejected any leniency on those grounds. In its scathing observations, the court remarked, "There is no doubt regarding the sheer venality and callousness with which the convicts acted, reflecting an utter disregard for human dignity and life. Their conduct was not only unlawful — it was morally bankrupt and profoundly inhumane. However, in view of their advanced age and the prolonged agony endured during the course of the trial, this court refrains from awarding capital punishment. " Victims' counsel, advocate Sarabjeet Singh Verka, said the judgment comes after a protracted legal battle that spanned over three decades. "Justice has been delayed, but not denied. The families waited 32 years for this day," Verka said, adding that five other co-accused in the case died during the trial. The case pertains to the killing of seven young men from Rani Willa village in Tarn Taran — SPOs Shinder Singh, Sukhdev Singh and Desa Singh, Balkar Singh alias Kala, Sarabjit Singh alias Saba, Harwinder Singh, and Mangal Singh According to the CBI investigation, the victims were abducted by police teams in June-July 1993 and killed in two fake encounters on July 12 and July 28, 1993. The court accepted CBI's findings that the killings were not genuine encounters, but planned executions involving abduction, illegal detention, torture, and the eventual staging of deaths to pass them off as militant killings. The investigation revealed that inspector Gurdev Singh, then SHO of Sirhali, led the abduction of four victims on June 27, 1993. The other three were abducted by SHO of Verowal, Suba Singh, in July. CBI prosecutor Anmol Narang said the prosecution cited 67 witnesses, but 36 died during the trial. Only 28 witnesses could ultimately testify. Families Expected Death Sentence Family members of the fake-encounter victims wept upon hearing the verdict. "It's a moment of justice we thought would never come," said one of the relatives outside the courtroom. They expected the death sentence but are satisfied with the verdict. The widows demanded salary arrears and pension according to their husbands' remuneration and demanded govt jobs on compassionate grounds for their sons. The kin of the victims said that they have not conducted last rites or 'Bhog' of their men killed by Punjab police as their bodies were never found. Most of the women became widows within two to three years of their marriages.
