Behind the eyes and in the land: What Tom Thomson saw, and what he may have missed

Many of us just can't resist a good pilgrimage, whether it's a religious one or not. The soul desires a deeper connection with whatever truly moves us.
The late Canadian painter Tom Thomson has inspired many such pilgrimages. People often travel to where he's thought to be buried, in the family plot at Leith, Ont., or in a tiny cemetery beside Canoe Lake, in Algonquin Park, where he died under mysterious circumstances in 1917.
What strikes a deeper chord in me, though, is discovering the places he painted: the sites that made him set down his things and open his painting box.
In the fall of 2018, while my brother Adam and I were portaging between two small lakes in the northeastern reaches of Algonquin Park, I heard rushing water way back in the woods. I stopped to take a look, making my way through the undergrowth, holding on to tree trunks.
What I found was almost certainly the subject of a canvas painted during his last winter, in his shack in Toronto: Woodland Waterfall. It was exhilarating to discover something that Thomson himself laid eyes on and was moved to paint.

Others have spent lots of time and effort tracking these sites down and documenting them, including Jim and Sue Waddington and the McElroys of Point Alexander. I'm just another pilgrim with a yearning to walk in Thomson's footsteps.
The essence of the place
There were occasions of even deeper connection: I wasn't just "matching" sites and paintings. I was seeing and feeling those dynamics of weather, terrain, and sheer serendipity that must have struck Thomson. These were the experiences of just being alive in that place.
It occurs to me all the time, standing in front of a little sketch, or even a finished painting by Tom Thomson. You feel you're behind the eyes; so there is that personal identification with him, too.
Here's what I mean. One evening, Adam and I camped on a peninsula jutting out into a small lake called Opalescent. We felt — and heard — the west wind, moving trees for miles around in a great chorus of branches and leaves and needles rustling against one another.
A light rain blew in, and moved on, and a rainbow appeared. Then, as the sun went down, the cloud patterns and the dappled water spoke for hours in a familiar voice.
We weren't "in" a specific Thomson work; I have no idea what paintings he might have done on this lake, but we were immersed in the same phenomena that moved him.
Reading the landscape
On the first day of our Algonquin pilgrimage, Adam and I went the wrong way. We couldn't see the inlet where the portage was, and we were paddling into a headwind, taunted by whitecaps. Eventually we got across the lake into a narrows, and things calmed down enough for us to realize we had to turn around. Only later did I see a note on the map that we had paddled past some petroglyphs — twice.
Petroglyphs — drawings on rock made by the Anishinaabe, the Indigenous people of this land — point us to an even more profound way of seeing and experiencing, one quite apart from the western school of landscape art of Thomson and the Group of Seven.

Gerald McMaster is a professor of Indigenous visual culture and curatorial practice at the Ontario College of Art and Design University in Toronto.
He was part of the team that reinstalled the Canadian collection at the Art Gallery of Ontario in 2008. He juxtaposed Thomson's West Wind with two quillwork bags made by Anishinaabe artists in the late 18th century. These bags depicted the Thunderbird and the Mishipeshu, forces that he saw at work in Thomson's painting.
I asked McMaster ​what he might hang with The Pointers, one of my favourite Thomson canvases, painted during the winter of 1916-1917. He thought immediately of the great Anishinaabe painter Norval Morrisseau.
"He studied his elders. He studied perhaps some of the pictographs that you'd see on the rock surfaces in Northern Ontario, Midewiwin scrolls that are often studied by religious leaders ... and created his own peculiar style ... quite colourful like Thomson," he said.
"But he's not creating a landscape like a landscape painter. [He's] rather reading the landscape, what's in the landscape: the spirits, the animals, the fish below and the interrelation of everything."
In 1979, Morrisseau was invited by the McMichael Canadian Collection to take up residence in Thomson's shack, on the gallery's grounds in Kleinburg, Ontario.
Morrisseau created some stunning paintings during that time; one of the most famous ones is called Shaman and Disciples. It communicates a powerful message of vision and wisdom almost immediately.
McMaster points to a deep and illuminating expression of land and spirituality being expressed by a whole new generation of Indigenous artists, like Christi Belcourt, Lisa Myers and Michael Belmore.
"It goes back to that Indigenous knowledge of the land," said McMaster.
"They're studying the land so remarkably and intellectually and in an articulate way … I could see that kind of artist juxtaposed together with Thomson ... because again it's a Northern Ontario landscape.
"We're just looking at it differently. Artists are looking at the same thing in a different way."

'Absolutely not,' said Daniel Williams of Sarnia, Ont., while he was exploring Green Cove in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park on Sunday. 'I love Canada. You've got to stay here nowadays.' Williams added he is back touring the Cabot Trail after being captivated by its scenery during a trip to the area in March, but said the current political climate sealed his plans for a summer return. 'I'd prefer to stay in Canada and keep our money here, support local businesses around the area,' Williams said. Local businesses in the area are seeing the rise in Canadian visitors as well. Black Brook Beach Cape Breton is seeing a rise in Canadian tourism amidst turmoil with the U.S. (CTV Atlantic/ Ryan MacDonald) 'We had a group from British Columbia last week that indicated they normally do go south, but they said they would be traveling within Canada this year,' said Dan Coffin, owner of the Auld Farm Inn in Baddeck. Coffin said while some other operators he has spoken to have not been as busy lately as they had hoped, he has been fully booked all but a couple of nights so far in July. 'Some are either hesitant to say they are from the U.S., and some start off by saying 'Sorry for our political situation at the moment',' Coffin said with a laugh. 'So, it is an interesting thing when you see the motivation behind why some people are coming.' As the head of Emergency Management for Victoria County, Lyle Donovan travels around the area as much as anyone. He said any extra visitors are a plus for a place that depends on the tourist dollar. 'It seems to be a little busier this year,' Donovan said. 'It's great for the economy for us here. We're a tourist-based [place], tourism and fishing based, and this is the main part of our industry here in Cape Breton.' 'If you haven't been to this part of the world, you should definitely come check it out,' Williams added. Pikangikum First Nation faces power outage amid evacuation prompted by nearby wildfire

Social Sharing As wildfires continue to threaten First Nations in northwestern Ontario, Pikangikum is facing another challenge: a community-wide power outage. A Facebook post from Pikangikum First Nation band councillor Deedre Peters, posted on Sunday, says the remote Ojibway community has been without power for more than 24 hours. Meanwhile, a fire known as Red Lake 62 has prompted an evacuation of Pikangikum's most vulnerable. As of Sunday, the wildfire was more than 31,000 hectares large and not under control. Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources issued an implementation order for the Red Lake 62 area on Saturday, limiting travel and the use of several lakes and roads. On Thursday, the Ontario Provincial Police said more than 2,000 people from Pikangikum had been identified as requiring evacuation, starting Saturday. According to Peters' post, more than 240 people were to be flown out on Sunday, though "a pause on broader evacuation is pending further instruction from the chief." Evacuees are being sent to Toronto, stopping first in Thunder Bay. CBC News observed staff with the Independent First Nations Alliance (IFNA) assisting Pikangikum members at the Thunder Bay International Airport, but no one was available for comment. A community update call is planned for 3:30 p.m. CST, Peters' post says. It is unclear exactly how close the fire is to Pikangikum at this time. Between 3,500 and 4,000 people live in Pikangikum, located in Treaty 5 more than 500 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay. It's one of the largest remote communities in the region. Pikangikum's nursing station is running on generator power without air conditioning and cannot support full operations, Peters said online. Other critical buildings, such as elders' complexes, are facing power shortages and overheating, while food spoilage is occurring due to freezer failures. With shortages of food and fuel and "several patients" awaiting medical evacuations, Peters says "general morale is low due to heat, outages, and uncertainty." Power could be restored by Sunday evening, he said, while telecom repairs aren't scheduled to begin until July 21. CBC News has reached out to Ontario's ministry of emergency preparedness and response and is awaiting an emailed statement. Smoke, haze has pros and cons On Friday, just under 250 people from North Spirit Lake First Nation were flown to Thunder Bay due to a fire known as Red Lake 40, which measures at more than 11,000 hectares. From there, they were sent to Toronto and Mississauga. "Firefighters have met with challenging conditions over the past several days as poor visibility due to smoke drift has limited the use of aircraft, as well as ongoing drought conditions in the Red Lake fire management area that support active fire behaviour on sections of the various fires," fire information officer Alison Bezubiak told CBC News in an email Sunday afternoon. More than 50 wildfires were reported in the region as of Sunday afternoon at various stages of control. While the smoke has made it harder for fire crews to tackle the blazes, at the same time, "haze has also led to higher relative humidity and less intense heat from the sun, which has helped to reduce fire activity." Still, "with skies beginning to clear near the Manitoba border and stronger winds in the forecast, an increase in fire behaviour is possible," Bezubiak said. The wildland fire hazard is low to moderate across much of the northwest, except for the western edge of the region along the Ontario-Manitoba border, where there hasn't been as much rainfall. "From the town of Fort Frances and spanning northward to Opasquia Provincial Park, the hazard is mainly high, with an area of extreme hazard around Weeskayjahk Ohtahzhoganeeng Provincial Park," said Bezubiak. Besides Red Lake 62 and Red Lake 40, other fires of note include Red Lake 67, west of McDowell Lake First Nation, at more than 32,000 hectares large, and Red Lake 72, east of Poplar Hill First Nation, at over 4,900 hectares. Red Lake 12, the largest fire in the region, continues to be observed at more than 195,000 hectares, making it Ontario's largest wildfire on record in terms of hectares burned. Air quality statements continue Well over a dozen air quality statements remain in effect in northwestern Ontario due to wildfire smoke, including for the City of Thunder Bay. "We did have a low-pressure system move off into Hudson Bay, which will bring northwesterly winds over northwestern Ontario, so that's kind of funnelling that smoke from those wildfires into the area," said Kristina Kretchman, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, in an interview with CBC News on Sunday. Poor air quality is expected to persist Sunday night and possibly Monday before improving, she said. Symptoms include eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough. "If you work outdoors, see if you can reduce exertion. Try to reschedule strenuous outdoor activities, seek medical attention if you're experiencing symptoms," Kretchman said. "If you're indoors, if you can, keep windows and doors closed as much as possible to prevent smoke from getting inside."
