Whitmore Getting Traded From Rockets To Wizards, AP Source Says
The trade will likely be folded into a larger, multiteam series of moves and cannot be finalized until Sunday at the earliest, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of that pending NBA approval. The league's offseason moratorium on most player movement gets lifted Sunday at noon EDT. ESPN first reported the trade agreement.
Whitmore, a Maryland native, averaged 10.8 points in his two seasons with the Rockets–who took him with the No. 20 pick in the 2023 draft.
Whitmore's acquisition is another step in the offseason overhaul by the Wizards, who have been in the mode of acquiring young players who can play multiple positions while continuing to accumulate assets. They could have $100 million available–if not more–in cap space next summer and earlier in this offseason acquired CJ McCollum and Kelly Olynyk in a trade with New Orleans for Jordan Poole, along with landing Tre Johnson with the No. 6 pick in the draft.

Naylor homers as the Diamondbacks beat the Padres 6-3 on Machado's big night
Josh Naylor hit a two-run homer against his original team, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat San Diego 6–3 on Monday night after Padres slugger Manny Machado got his 2,000th career hit. Machado hit a hard shot off the glove of diving shortstop Geraldo Perdomo leading off the fourth inning and received a standing ovation. Machado, whose milestone hit came off starter Zac Gallen, became the fifth active player and 297th overall to reach 2,000 hits. Machado's third hit of the night was a homer off Kyle Backhus leading off the eighth–his 15th of the season and 357th of his career. The All-Star slugger also had a single in the first. Machado grounded into a game-ending double play against Kevin Ginkel, who earned his second save. Yu Darvish (0–1) made his season debut for the Padres after being sidelined with right elbow inflammation since spring training. He allowed two runs and three hits in 3 2/3 innings, struck out five, and walked two. He got a nice ovation when he was lifted. Naylor homered to center field off Yuki Matsui with one out in the fifth, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. aboard on a single. It was his 11th. Naylor made his big league debut with the Padres in 2019 and was traded to Cleveland on August 31, 2020, in the nine-player deal that brought Mike Clevinger to San Diego. Gallen (7–9) pitched six strong innings, holding the Padres to one unearned run and five hits while striking out nine and walking one. He improved to 4–0 in his last five starts against San Diego. Naylor walked leading off the second and scored on All-Star Eugenio Suárez's double that rattled around in the left-field corner. Gurriel's single in the third brought in Corbin Carroll, who hit a leadoff double and advanced on Perdomo's sacrifice bunt. Carroll hit an RBI triple in the eighth and scored on Perdomo's single. Key moment: Machado's milestone hit came a day after his 33rd birthday. Key stat: Machado is the 12th-youngest player with 2,000 career hits and at least 350 homers. Up next: Diamondbacks RHP Merrill Kelly (7–4, 3.55 ERA) and Padres RHP Nick Pivetta (9–2, 3.25) are scheduled to start Tuesday night.

Schanuel Walks With Bases Loaded in 9th to Lift Angels Over Rangers 6-5
Nolan Schanuel drew a bases-loaded walk from Hoby Milner in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a 6–5 win over the Texas Rangers on Monday night. Travis d'Arnaud hit an early two-run homer off Texas starter Jacob deGrom and finished with three RBIs. Corey Seager launched a two-run shot off Yusei Kikuchi to put the Rangers ahead 2–0 two batters into the game. Josh Smith had an RBI double for Texas that tied it at 5 in the eighth. For all the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app. Luis Rengifo doubled off Rangers reliever Chris Martin (0–5) to open the ninth and went to third on Kevin Newman's one-out single to left field. Zach Neto was intentionally walked to load the bases. Texas manager Bruce Bochy summoned Milner for a lefty–lefty matchup with Schanuel, who fought back from an 0–2 count before taking a 3–2 changeup below the strike zone for his second career walk-off RBI. The Angels turned a 4–3 deficit into a 5–4 lead in the sixth when Rengifo singled with two outs, d'Arnaud hit an RBI double, and LaMonte Wade Jr. followed with a pinch-hit RBI single. But the Rangers tied it against reliever Sam Bachman with two outs in the eighth. Jake Burger reached on a wild pitch when strike three in the dirt got past d'Arnaud and then scored from first on Smith's double. An anticipated pitchers' duel between All-Star starters didn't materialize as deGrom gave up three runs and five hits in five innings while Kikuchi allowed four runs and six hits in five innings.

Giants Score 2 in 8th Inning to Beat Phillies 3-1
Casey Schmitt drove home the go-ahead run on a groundball in the eighth inning. Matt Chapman made a headfirst dive into home moments later for another run, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3–1 on Monday night. Orion Kerkering (5–4) hit Willy Adames with a pitch to start the Giants' eighth before Chapman's single advanced Adames to third. Wilmer Flores was also plunked to load the bases for Schmitt. Tyler Rogers (4–2) allowed a leadoff single to Kyle Schwarber in the top of the eighth but worked out of the jam for the win. Camilo Doval finished for his 14th save – getting J.T. Realmuto to line out on a 95-mph sinker for the first out after a 13-pitch battle before ending it on a 3–6 double play. San Francisco had also loaded the bases in the second with no outs against lefty Cristopher Sánchez, who then struck out Jung Hoo Lee before an RBI groundout by Luis Matos. That inning, Sánchez issued his first walk in five starts – ending a career-best stretch without a free pass. The Phillies tied the score at 1 in the fifth on a wild pitch by San Francisco starter Landon Roupp. Schmitt returned for the Giants following a 10-game absence after being hit on the left hand by a pitch June 25. Philadelphia's offense went cold. The Phillies had won three of four and five of seven, scoring 29 runs. Key moment: With the go-ahead run on first and one out in the fifth, Giants right fielder Matos made a diving catch on Schwarber's sharp line drive. Bryce Harper was then called out on strikes to end the threat. Key stat: Adames has a season-best eight-game hitting streak after a two-out double in the fifth for San Francisco.
