Top Maoist leader cremated in Narayanpur; Chhattisgarh cops claim there were no claimants
The state police said no legal claimants had come forward to claim his body.
'Following the operation, the authorities recovered the bodies of 27 Maoists. Of these, 20 were claimed by their family members and were handed over after due verification. However, no one came forward to claim the body of Basavaraju, who was carrying a reward of ₹1 crore announced by the Chhattisgarh government, with additional reward from other states and central agencies,' the statement said.
Basavaraju, the top leader of the CPI (Maoist) since 2018, was among the 27 Maoists killed in a gunfight with District Reserve Guard (DRG) in the dense Kudmel-Kalhaja-Jatloor forest area of Abujhmad on May 21.
'The cremation was carried out under the supervision of the executive magistrate after obtaining necessary legal orders. Notably, even the family of Kosi alias Hungi, one of the deceased cadres, requested local authorities to perform cremation in Narayanpur due to concerns over health hazards from decomposition,' the statement said.
Monday's move comes days after the Andhra Pradesh high court on Saturday told the family members of two slain Maoist leaders, Basvaraju and Sajja Venkata Nageswara Rao alias Rajanna, to approach the Chhattisgarh police to seek custody of their bodies. Basavaraju's mother Bharatamma and Nageshwara Rao's brother Sajja Srinivasa Rao had filed separate petitions to seek directions to the police to hand over their bodies for the final rites.
According to the police, Basavaraju, who was previously the head of the Central Military Commission of the banned group, was linked to over 250 criminal cases across various states.
'We have also recovered an AK-47 rifle which Basavaraju allegedly looted from security forces during the infamous 2010 Tadmetla ambush in Dantewada,' said the statement.
The CPI (Maoist) has confirmed the death of its top leader in what it has called the 'Gundekot Massacre'.
In a statement released by its Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC), Vikalp, on Monday, it was alleged that the security forces were able to get to him due to intelligence leaks and betrayal by some. It also claimed Basavaraj was captured alive and executed and accused the government of violating a ceasefire previously proposed by Basavaraj.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A group of consumers, led by the local unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI-M), staged a protest on Wednesday against the ongoing installation of 'smart meters' by the MSEDCL . Protesters said these new Time of Day (TOD) meters will inflict an additional financial burden on consumers. When contacted, MSEDCL authorities said false propaganda involving smart meters is being spread by certain elements. "We have not received complaints of hefty power bills from consumers who have received the smart meters. The existing postpaid nature of power bills will continue in the future too. The power tariffs are decided by the power regulator MERC, and therefore there is no scope for any arbitrary hike," the MSEDCL spokesperson for the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar zone said.

Beach in Nagapattinam town lacks basic amenities despite growing footfall
Despite being one of the most frequented public spaces in the town, the Nagapattinam beach continues to lack essential amenities such as public toilets and drinking water facilities. With a steady footfall of hundreds of visitors—especially families and youth who gather during mornings, evenings, and even late into the night—the absence of basic infrastructure has become a pressing concern for residents and civic activists alike. The beach, known for its calm atmosphere and perceived safety, attracts both local residents and tourists. Volleyball courts on the shore remain active through the day, drawing groups of youngsters and sports enthusiasts. In recent weeks, the district administration has taken steps to revitalise the beachfront by organising weekend programmes to encourage greater public participation. 'Though families visit the beach regularly, there are no facilities for them,' said K. Venkadesan, town secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). 'There is not a single public toilet or drinking water facility. Even in emergencies, people have to walk at least a kilometre to find water when beachside stalls are shut.' He urged the municipality to immediately install free public toilets and provide access to drinking water, especially in light of the increasing public engagement encouraged by local authorities. When contacted, a senior official from Nagapattinam municipality confirmed that plans are underway to set up toilet facilities and ensure the availability of drinking water on the beach in the near future.

Two accused in Parliament security breach case granted bail
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday granted bail to two persons accused in the 2023 Parliament security breach case, Bar and Bench reported. A bench of Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar allowed petitions filed by Neelam Azad and Mahesh Kumawat for bail in the case, which was reserved on May 21, Live Law reported. The bail was subject to Azad and Kumawat furnishing a bail bond of Rs 50,000 each and two sureties. The two were also barred from holding press conferences or giving interviews, and posting anything on social media about the incident. The matter pertained to two men, Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D, jumping into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors' gallery and opening gas canisters on December 13, 2023. Outside Parliament, Azad and a man – Amol Dhanraj Shinde – had opened smoke canisters and shouted 'stop dictatorship' slogans. All four were arrested in connection with the breach. A day later, the police arrested Lalit Jha, allegedly the mastermind behind the incident, and Kumawat, a co-accused. The police charged all six under provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. Azad moved the High Court in September 2024 against a city court denying her bail, while Kumawat also filed an appeal in November against the rejection of his bail petition, the Hindustan Times reported. During earlier proceedings, Azad and Kumawat told the court that the police had wrongly invoked the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against them, adding that their alleged actions did not construe an act of terrorism. Azad said that her conduct did not amount to an act of terror as she had entered the premises using a valid pass and without weapons, the Hindustan Times reported. Kumawat said that his intention was to draw attention towards certain issues having democratic and political importance. However, the police argued that the breach coincided with the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack, which was enough to prove that the intention of those accused in the matter was likely to strike terror or threaten the security of the country. On December 13, 2001, terrorists entered the Parliament complex and began shooting with AK-47 rifles. The attack had left nine persons dead. The police also submitted that those accused in the case wanted to bring back 'haunted memories' of the 2001 attack to the 'majestic' new Parliament building, Live Law reported. The bench, however, asked whether an offence under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act could be made out against those accused. It added that if using smoke canisters were a terrorist act, then every Holi and Indian Premier League match would also attract such provisions, Live Law reported.
