‘Unofficial Uber' driver guilty of kidnapping, attempted rape and sexual assault
Graham Head, 68, had latex gloves, condoms, Viagra tablets and a balaclava in his silver Mercedes estate when he was arrested in November 2022.
In his home, business cards advertising him as a 'N-Uber driver' were emblazoned with the slogan 'Safe and Reliable – For All Occasions' underneath one of his phone numbers.
In July 2023, Head, of Pevensey, East Sussex, was handed a 23-year sentence for the kidnap and attempted rape of a 25-year-old woman, along with assault by penetration of a 19-year-old woman.
In November 2024, the Court of Appeal overturned the conviction following a complaint from Head relating to the judge who presided over the original trial.
On Thursday, he was convicted of all charges again by a jury of seven men and five women after eight hours of deliberation at Lewes Crown Court.
During the trial, jurors heard that Head was a 'sexual predator' who 'slipped up' the night he was arrested by police.
He claimed that he offered the 25-year-old a lift home but did not touch her and never met his other alleged victim.
Prosecutor Paul Jarvis KC said: 'The defendant is a sexual predator. Basing himself in Pevensey and ostensibly working as an unofficial Uber driver or taxi driver.
'He was also looking for vulnerable young women who he could sexually abuse.
'He carried Viagra and condoms with him, either on his person or in his car, as well as latex gloves. He would use the latex gloves to minimise the risk of leaving traces of his DNA on his victims.'
Head had two mobile phones and was 'savvy enough' to know that if he kept them on while he was driving, the network provider could record his movements so kept them in flight mode while he was searching for victims, the court was told.
The two attacks are said to have taken place in the early hours of August 19 2022, in Hove Park and November 18 2022 outside the alleged victim's home.
Mr Jarvis said: 'Now in August 2022, she (the first victim) was 19 years old. When she was, we say, intoxicated and vulnerable in the early hours of the morning the defendant sexually assaulted her in Hove Park.'
'In November 2022, she (the second victim) was 25 years old. When she was also vulnerable and intoxicated in the early hours of the morning, Mr Head kidnapped her and sexually assaulted her in his car and then drove off leaving her distressed on the roadside.
'On both occasions, the defendant was driving his grey Mercedes estate motor vehicle with the registration number L21 GRH.'
The 25-year-old was able to remember the 'L21' portion of Head's number plate, which led to police pulling his car over and arresting him the same night, jurors heard.
'He slipped up on November 19 2022 in two respects. First because his victim was alert enough to be able to memorise part of the licence plate for the police to be able to identify his car when they saw it,' said Mr Jarvis.
The 25-year-old had been on a night out and had consumed alcohol and cocaine on the night in question, the court heard.
Her account is that a man pulled up alongside her and told her he was an Uber driver who had just finished his shift but would give her a free ride home.
Journeys from Middle Street, in Brighton, where the victim left Monarch Bar, to the victim's home address were found after analysis of the satnav in Head's Mercedes.
Mr Jarvis continued: 'He offered to give her a life home but his real plan was to drive around until he was satisfied she was fast asleep so he could sexually assault and rape her.
'He drove close to her home address and tried to rape her in the back seat of his car but she came to and kicked him away.'
The 25-year-old has since died and did not give evidence at the trial.
Head will be sentenced on August 22 2025.

Mace-fueled catfight erupts in Uber after TV presenter asked Atlanta driver to roll up windows in 90F heat
A sports reporter claims she was violently assaulted and pepper-sprayed after asking her Uber driver to roll up the car windows during 90-degree heat. Tabitha Turner, an Atlanta based NBA and WNBA presenter, was travelling in the back of Mericole Smith's vehicle Saturday afternoon when the mace-fueled fight broke out. She asked Smith to roll up the windows and turn on the air conditioning, but the driver refused and demanded she exit the vehicle on the side of the highway, Turner claims. Video captured by the reporter shows how she pleaded with Smith, saying she 'just wanted a cool Uber', as the driver repeatedly said 'get out'. Smith said she always kept the windows of her car open so passengers who felt sick could vomit out of them instead of soiling her upholstery. 'Call the cops or refund my money,' the reporter told the visibly annoyed driver. The argument quickly became heated with Turner explaining how she 'requested a cool Uber' in the app. 'Get the f*** out of the car,' Smith yelled back, before she reached into the backseat and physically attacking Turner. 'What the f*** is wrong with you? You got no right.' Smith, who also allegedly deployed mace as she punched Turner in the face, has been charged with battery - but maintains Turner was the aggressor in the situation. She says that's when Turner 'goes into her bag to get a weapon', prompting her to get back inside the vehicle and sit in the driver's seat. Turner then continued to threaten her, Smith claims, so 'I proceeded to grab my mace and I maced the f*** out of her in self-defense.' She then revealed her bruised face and swollen left eye, which was originally hidden from view, to the camera, claiming that Turner 'tried to gouge my eye out'. Turner claims the allegations in Smith's video are not true and have caused her to receive violent threats. 'This is so hurtful that this is happening,' she said told press conference Wednesday, during which she was accompanied by her attorney. Turner explained she wanted a 'cool ride', like she had requested in the app, and that she did not exit the vehicle because she felt unsafe doing so in traffic. 'People questioning my character because of what she's saying,' she told WSB, noting the backlash from the incident has impacted her career opportunities. 'I just wanted to go home after work and see my daughter,' she added. Smith, however, says that she is being 'punished' even though she was 'the one that has to go to the hospital'. 'See the bruises on my body?' she told reporters. 'I have to relive this over and over and over again.' A warrant for Smith's arrest was issued Wednesday. Smith confirmed to WSB that she would turn herself in on battery charges. It is unclear as of Thursday if she has yet done so. Daily Mail has approached police and Turner's attorney for comment. Uber, in a statement, said: 'Safety is fundamental to the Uber experience, and conduct like this is not tolerated. 'We've taken action in response to this disturbing incident, including removing the driver from the Uber platform, and will support law enforcement however we can.'

Atlanta sports reporter Tabitha Turner alleges she was pepper-sprayed in the face and physically attacked by an Uber driver over the weekend following a dispute over the car temperature. The Uber driver, identified by police as Mericole Smith, is facing charges of misdemeanor battery and simple battery after Hapeville police said a video of the Saturday incident showed that she was the aggressor and physically attacked Turner. Police said an arrest warrant would be issued for Smith. Turner's attorney, Miguel Dominguez, said in a Wednesday press conference that the altercation occurred as Turner was being driven to her home from the Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Smith, who accused Turner of escalating the situation in a viral TikTok video, did not return a request for comment on Thursday. According to Dominguez, Turner had requested an Uber Comfort, which allows passengers to customize the ride. Uber's website says that passengers who use this service can let the driver know if they want to talk during the ride and set a temperature preference. Because of the scorching hot temperatures in Atlanta, Turner wanted "a cool Uber," Dominguez said. But when Smith arrived, she had the windows rolled down and the air conditioner wasn't turned on, he said. 'The driver did not respond verbally, but she did put the air conditioner on, but she did not roll the windows up. And so as the ride went on, the vehicle obviously did not cool off,' he told reporters. 'My client was really hot, she was sweaty, she addressed the driver again, asking that the windows be rolled up. The response she got from the driver was not kind and was not friendly. The driver was clearly irritated by, I guess, the demands of a passenger.' Dominguez said the driver suddenly pulled over in the emergency lane on the expressway and ordered Turner out of the vehicle. He said Turner did not get out and told the driver to either take her back to the airport, where it was safe, or call the police and refund her the money for the fare. According to the attorney, Turner was 'completely calm.' He alleged that Smith exited the car, removed Turner's bags and then attempted to 'physically remove my client from the vehicle by grabbing the bookbag that she was carrying and getting into a struggle.' In her TikTok video, Smith said she turned the air conditioner up after Turner commented on how hot the car was. However, she explained that she does not roll up the windows because she sometimes has passengers who are sick. Smith said the windows were only slightly cracked. According to Smith, Turner started yelling at her, so she told Turner that she would take her back to the airport and end the trip. 'That was not good enough for her,' Smith said in her video.
