UMC: 2 new accolades show commitment to elders

Yahoo05-02-2025
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — University Medical Center of El Paso announced Tuesday, Feb. 4 what it is calling a significant milestone in its efforts to deliver quality health care to the Borderland region and older residents in particular.
UMC said it has achieved two significant new accreditations — Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and a Level 2 Age-Friendly: Committed to Care Excellence Recognition for its outpatient clinics from the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI).
'As many members in our community age, they require more specialized care. This accreditation and designation, coupled with the geriatric center that will be built in Central El Paso, are prime examples of our focus toward seniors and their care. We are honored to be accredited as a Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department and to have Age-friendly designated outpatient clinics to maintain the highest level of care for patients of all ages,' said Jacob Cintron, president and CEO for the El Paso County Hospital District.
The GEDA program is a national initiative that recognizes hospitals equipped to handle complex health issues among older patients, UMC said.
To obtain this accreditation, UMC's Emergency Department at the UMC Main Campus implemented specialized geriatric training for staff and screenings to identify potential risks in patients, such as cognitive impairment and fall risks, the hospital said.
As an Age-Friendly Health System, UMC's Outpatient Clinics have also implemented a set of evidence-based interventions specifically designed to improve care for adults age 65 years and older, the hospital said.
'The country is aging, and El Paso is no exception. The median age in El Paso in 2000 was between 28-30 years of age. Now, it is estimated at 34 years of age. The need is clear to health professionals and it must be understood by the public and policymakers, as well. This is one piece of the puzzle to ensure our elders are able to age with dignity,' County Commissioenr David Stout said. 'I am grateful to the community members who brought this opportunity to our attention, and to the Hospital District for moving on the initiative.'

Campaign at Costco raises $52K for El Paso Children's Hospital

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Children's Hospital Foundation said it has raised more than $52,000 through this year's Miracle Balloon Campaign in partnership with Costco. The money will be used to support life-saving care and critical programs for children in the region, the foundation said. 'This year's campaign saw a remarkable increase of over 30% compared to last year's total, thanks to the generosity of Costco shoppers and the dedication of Costco employees. Every dollar raised during the campaign stays local, directly benefiting El Paso Children's Hospital and helping ensure that every child receives the best possible care, regardless of their ability to pay,' the foundation said. The successful campaign was made possible through the 'passionate involvement of every department at Costco,' the foundation said. 'Costco employees created a months-long calendar filled with fun, themed dress-up days, bringing energy and joy to the campaign while encouraging donations at the register. From superheroes to wear pink on Wednesdays, the entire team rallied together in the name of a greater cause,' the foundation said in its news release. 'We are truly inspired by the generosity of our El Paso community and the incredible team at Costco,' said Alexa Velasquez, program director of Children's Miracle Network at El Paso Children's Hospital Foundation. 'These funds will help us continue our mission of advancing pediatric health care in the Borderland. Together, we are making a lasting impact on the lives of children and families who need us most.' El Paso County approves delivery method for construction of new Office of Medical Examiner

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso County Commissioners Court approved the use of a construction manager at risk (CMAR) for the construction of a new Office of the Medical Examiner on Monday, June 2. According to the news release by the County, the CMAR approach will 'allow the County to hire a construction firm early in the process to collaborate closely with the design team.' In addition, the CMAR method is 'designed to improve project coordination, manage costs, save time and deliver the best value for El Paso County,' the County said. As we've previously reported, the new Office of the Medical Examiner is one of three major projects that El Paso County voters approved in 2024 as part of the Capital Improvement Program. County commissioners approve next steps in multimillion dollar voter-approved projects According to the County, the Commissioners Court also authorized the County Purchasing Agent to 'solicit proposals from qualified firms to serve as the CMAR for this project.' The Medical Examiner's Office is responsible for investigating deaths that happen suddenly, without explanation or under suspicious or violent circumstances, the County said For more information on other approved projects in the 2024 Capital Improvement Program, you can visit El Paso County's website.
