2025 Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Television Movie
We will update this article throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2025 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting takes place from June 12 to June 23, with the official Emmy nominations announced Tuesday, July 15. Afterwards, final voting commences on August 18 and ends the night of August 27. The 77th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, September 14, and air live on CBS at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT. The State of the Race This is not meant to be rude to the film 'Am I Ok?,' a Sundance 2022 premiere that finally made it onto HBO Max last summer, but do voters know that it's an Emmys contender? There are actual Outstanding TV Movie contenders that have campaigned so much harder, so it is a surprise to see the Dakota Johnson-led comedy still place so high on prognosticators' lists. In fact, HBO Max itself has never been nominated in this category before. HBO proper hasn't even been nominated for TV Movie the past two years. It is also written and directed by 'Succession' creator Jesse Armstrong, who already has several Emmys to his name. 'Mountainhead' is one of four films that are on just about every nominations predictions list, with two other contenders being obvious enough for the general public to guess. First is 'Rebel Ridge,' one of the biggest Netflix films of the year, which has taken star Aaron Pierre to a new level of success where he's even getting James Bond casting rumors leveled at him. Interesting too that the streaming service did not submit 'Carry-On,' a similarly popular hit action film that premiered closer to the holidays, as it would have probably cannibalized Netflix's chances of winning this category. The other movie that seems bound for an Emmy nomination is 'Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,' the fourth Bridget Jones film starring Renée Zellweger. Though it premiered on Peacock in the United States, the movie was actually a big hit abroad. The Emmy race for Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie is pretty thin too, so Zellweger, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in the first film, is likely to have an Emmy nomination that will draw more voters toward watching the sequel. Less on the public's radar, but a staple of the most recent TV awards is the film 'Out of My Mind,' streaming on Disney+. The YA novel adaptation about a young girl with cerebral palsy trying to find her voice was a sleeper hit at Sundance 2024, and has since won a Peabody Award and been one of the Television Academy honorees this year. The film especially has great word-of-mouth, eliciting tears from the majority of the audience at its official for your consideration event at the Academy Museum. In terms of what could actually be nominated in the slot people predict 'Am I Ok?' will be in, look no further than Tina Mabry's 'The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat.' Not only does it star Uzo Aduba, who is a TV Academy favorite, it comes from reigning category winner Hulu. Teyana Taylor is always open to talking about her boo, Aaron Pierre, and now she's letting us know exactly how he handles her. In a teaser for an upcoming interview with Complex Music, the singer and actress revealed that her lion King is 'very gentle' and that his support of her new music was all the help she needed. 'It felt good to have someone be as passionate and as serious as you are,' Taylor said. 'When you work on something, you have a whole team that's supported, but nobody ever gonna see it the way you see it. Sometimes, you might get so passionate, they're looking at you like, 'chill out' but to have a person that's right there like 'yup! mhmmm', to have someone on your side fully hear you and don't think your visions are crazy, don't think that what you see or what you feel is crazy…' She continued, 'I'm really big on how you handle me, and I feel like you got to handle me like a cup of tea. How would you walk with a cup of tea versus how you would walk with a bottle of water? You walk with a bottle of water, you're like, shaking the water, you throwing it up and down. With a cup of tea you walk slower. You're more calm, you're more delicate. And even when you sip it, what happens if you sip the tea too, too fast? You're going to burn your tongue. The cute visuals also feature a spoken intro from actress Issa Rae who seems to be telling the story of how Teyana and Aaron came to fall for one another unexpectedly. May that type of surprise find us all! It's unclear when the two may have started getting cozy, but it's obvious that they're both really into what they're building together. Not only did Tey throw him a surprise birthday dinner with both of their families and friends, she also brought him along to the BET Awards where she had her daughters, Junie and Rue Rose, by her side as well. Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner Is Dropping F-Bombs and Smug Swagger in HBO's LANTERNS — GeekTyrant
Nathan Fillion is going to get the opportunity to really let it rip as Green Lantern/Guy Gardener in the Lanterns series, and by 'it,' I mean a whole lot of F-bombs. The Firefly and Castle star is bringing his version of Guy Gardner to James Gunn's Superman , but it's the upcoming Lanterns series on HBO where Fillion really gets to let loose. Unlike the PG-13 Superman, Lanterns is going full TV-MA, and so is Fillion's trash-talking, bowl-cut-sporting Gardner. 'I've dropped more f-bombs in that project than I have in, I think, my entire career put together,' Fillion told Entertainment Weekly. And coming from someone who's worked with Gunn on the profanity-filled Peacemaker, that's saying something. Fillion fpops up as Gardner in Peacemaker Season 2, before stepping into the spotlight in Lanterns , which Gunn has described as a gritty HBO drama in the vein of True Detective. It's a grounded mystery wrapped in cosmic chaos and Fillion is clearly having a blast playing the smug Lantern with a chip on his shoulder and a giant emerald middle finger at the ready. 'Guy Gardner is no longer comfortable. He is no longer feeling smug,' Fillion teased about his first interactions with Aaron Pierre's John Stewart. 'Then you can see where John's strength really lies. That is a strong individual.' Fillion had plenty of praise for Pierre, saying, 'Aaron, he's got a voice like butter. And he's statuesque, like he's carved out of marble. He's very, very specific about his character and what his character's going through. His character's clearly going through something. And then along comes this gregarious, smug son of a bitch in Guy Gardner.' That contrast seems to be at the core of the series, with Fillion's loudmouth bouncing off Pierre's composed, battle-worn Stewart. And though he doesn't have many scenes with Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan, Fillion still got to meet the Lantern veteran. 'Meeting Kyle, he's everything you'd hope he would be. Very fun, very nice man, very lighthearted, and fun to be around.' Fillion has history with the Green Lantern legacy, having voiced Hal Jordan across several DC animated movies since Green Lantern: Emerald Knights in 2011. But this time, it's different. 'There's been a bunch of people now who have played Hal Jordan, but I'm the first live-action Guy Gardner. If there's to be another, I'll still be the first. So I think I'm in a great spot.' The series, helmed by showrunner Chris Mundy ( Ozark ) and executive producers/writers Tom King ( Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow ) and Damon Lindelof ( Watchmen ), centers on Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they're drawn into a murder mystery in the American heartland. 'Our driving force has been to deliver a layered drama — rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world building — that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion,' said Mundy. Also starring Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen, Lanterns is slated to premiere on HBO in 2026. Until then, Superman flies into theaters this Friday, and it'll be our first proper taste of Fillion's Guy Gardner flipping off the DC Universe.
