One man shot dead, another injured during attempted CIT heist
Police spokesperson Brig Donald Mdhluli said the suspects were shot by security guards while attempting to carry out their mission.
'Preliminary reports indicate that an unidentified number of suspects were involved in the armed group that attacked a cash van, in an apparent attempt to rob the guards, but fled the scene during a shoot-out with the security personnel,' Mdhluli said.
One of the alleged suspects succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while another suspect sustained injuries and is receiving medical attention under police guard.
Two rifles were recovered at the scene, while a Ford Ranger reportedly used by the suspects was later found abandoned in Swalala near Masoyi.
'It is important to note that, according to our initial investigations, no money was stolen during this attempted robbery.'
Mdhluli said the surviving suspect is expected to appear in court soon.

The vehicle, reported missing from Marquard in the Free State, was intercepted by authorities on Wednesday evening. According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, members of the provincial anti-hijacking task team, in collaboration with Vispol units from Ehlanzeni and Tonga, acted on a tip-off from the public. "The information was then followed by the police, and they intercepted the vehicle between Low's Creek and Kaapmuiden, at the corner of R38 Road and the N4 Road," Mdhluli stated. The stolen Land Cruiser was found fitted with false Gauteng registration plates. The driver was immediately apprehended and charged with possession of a suspected stolen vehicle. He is expected to appear in court soon. 'His arrest comes after members of Limpopo SAPS provincial anti-smuggling task team received a tip-off about a stolen vehicle that was in the process of being smuggled out of the country to Zimbabwe, through Beitbridge port of entry,' Limpopo police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said at the time. The police team responded promptly, and the white Toyota Prado VX was spotted. The vehicle was intercepted along the R37 road from Lebowakgomo to Polokwane. The popular sport utility vehicle had been reported stolen in the Villieria policing area, in Tshwane. 'The police stopped the vehicle, and upon searching it, the driver, who is a South African, was unable to produce the valid documents for the vehicle. Car theft pandemic hits eMalahleni malls
A wave of car thefts has hit local shoppers after three vehicles were stolen and more than four others were targeted at shopping centre parking lots over the past week. The incidents have taken place at three different malls in eMalahleni. In one of the incidents, a man told the police that he had arrived at a certain mall's parking lot and locked his car properly before going to the bank. He further alleged that when he returned from the bank, his car, a Ford Ranger was no longer there. Police investigations are still underway regarding the incident. In the second incident, a man told the police that he arrived at a different mall in the city, parked his car at the parking lot, and then left for a restaurant there. He further alleged that upon his return to the parking lot, his car, a Toyota Fortuner was no longer where he left it. Another incident where criminals could not succeed with the car theft in a different mall, raised more official concerns about vehicle safety. The man told the police that he parked his car to go shopping. Upon return, he found that someone was forcefully trying to open his car. According to a local security company, the suspects appear to be working in groups, using remote jamming devices and other tools to break into vehicles while they are parked. Witbank Police are urging motorists to take extra precautions when parking at public places. Spokesperson, Sergeant David Ratau, advised motorists to use steering locks, vehicle alarms, and secure tracking devices. 'Drivers should make sure their vehicles are parked in safe spaces and avoid leaving valuables in plain sight. Being alert and parking in well-monitored areas can make a big difference,' he added. Local security companies are advising shoppers to double-check that their cars are locked and to report any suspicious behaviour to mall security or the police. 5 people killed in crash on R66 in Gingindlovu
JOHANNESBURG - Five people have died in a horrific crash on the R66 in Gingindlovu, north of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, including two children and three adults. Preliminary reports indicate that a Ford Ranger lost control and collided head-on with a smaller vehicle with eight occupants on board late last night. Seven others survived the crash. The accident comes after what the Department of Transport and the Department of Human Settlements has described as a relatively safe winter holiday. Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) needs to strengthen road safety measures ahead of the last-minute rush back home by holiday goers. 'As we count down to the reopening of schools, I have mandated RTI to strengthen road safety measures.'
