Pengerang CD Oil Rig Sculpture Shines at HLN 2025 Johor

The Sun27-06-2025
JOHOR BAHRU: A striking sculpture by the Pengerang Municipal Council, featuring a twin oil platform structure made from 7,000 compact discs and standing 5.5 metres tall, has become a key attraction at the 2025 National Landscape Day (HLN) celebration here.
Landscape architect Nur Asilah Abu Hassan, 33, said the piece, titled Letusan Alam was completed in about three weeks. It draws inspiration from oil rig platforms, swirling water, and fish scales—elements symbolising dynamic energy in the quest for natural resources beneath the earth.
'This sculpture reflects the harmony between industrial strength and natural beauty, while capturing the spirit and identity of the coastal Pengerang community,' she told Bernama.
The Pengerang Municipal Council is a newly formed local authority tasked with managing the fast-growing Pengerang region, which is home to the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC)—a mega oil and gas hub.
PIPC includes oil refineries, a naphtha plant, petrochemical facilities, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, and a regasification plant. It represents a significant investment in Malaysia's downstream oil and gas industry.
The HLN 2025 celebration, taking place from June 25 to 30 at Taman Bukit Layang-Layang, is organised by the National Landscape Department in collaboration with the Pasir Gudang City Council.
This year's theme is The Landscape Industry: A Key Driver of MADANI Development.

Bursa Malaysia Ends Flat Amid Cautious Sentiment, Mixed Domestic Developments

WORLD By Harizah Hanim Mohamed KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia ended almost flat on Monday, with the key index slipping 0.08 per cent, reflecting cautious market tone amid mixed domestic developments and bucking the broader regional trend. At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) erased 1.27 points to 1,524.59 from last Friday's close of 1,525.86. The benchmark index was 0.60 of a point better at 1,526.86 at the opening bell and moved between 1,520.02 and 1,526.46 throughout the trading session. The market breadth was negative, with 607 losers overtaking 342 gainers and 504 counters unchanged, while 1,014 were untraded and seven suspended. Turnover improved to 3.5 billion shares worth RM2.68 billion from 3.18 billion shares worth RM2.81 billion on last Friday. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said upbeat sentiment was seen across Asia, however, selling pressure continued to persist across emerging markets. 'We believe investor funds are rotating into Hong Kong and Chinese equities. Locally, ongoing foreign and retail selling reflects a cautious wait-and-see sentiment. Nonetheless, the FBM KLCI is well supported above the 1,520 level. 'We reckon today's selldown offers opportunity to bargain hunt stocks at lower levels, hence we expect the index to trend within the 1,510-1,540 level for the week,' he added.

Rubber Market Closes Lower On Weaker Oil, Firm Ringgit

WORLD By Engku Shariful Azni Engku Ab Latif KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian rubber market ended slightly lower on Monday, weighed down by weaker crude oil prices and a firmer ringgit against the US dollar, a dealer said. The dealer added that the decline also reflected lingering uncertainties over potential US trade tariffs and the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. 'However, losses were limited by optimism surrounding US-China trade talks and signs of increased economic stimulus from China,' she told Bernama. At the time of writing, Brent crude oil fell 0.38 per cent to US$68.96 per barrel. At 3 pm, the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) reported the price of Standard Malaysian Rubber 20 (SMR 20) eased by half-a-sen to 735.50 sen per kilogramme, while latex in bulk dropped 2.0 sen to 569.50 sen per kg. -- BERNAMA

FELCRA Should Review Oil Palm Plantation Acquisitions To Ensure Good Governance - AG's Report

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 (Bernama) -- The National Audit Department (NAD) has recommended that the acquisition of oil palm plantations under the Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority's (FELCRA) transformation plan be reviewed to ensure investments would bring 'value-for-money' returns based on its financial capabilities. The Auditor-General's Report 2/2025 presented at the Dewan Rakyat today also included recommnedations that the FELCRA Berhad board of directors be responsible in ensuring that oil palm plantation acquisitions were organised in line with their fiduciary duty and good governance practices. Also, the agency was advised to make improvements to its administrative process and that all decisions regarding oil palm plantation acquisitions be made collectively and in line with previous resolutions and the company's constitution. 'Any changes to the board of directors' decisions need to be recorded and confirmation be obtained through a new and clear resolution, with minutes recorded in an organised manner and documented accordingly by the company secretary in line with the Constitution of FELCRA Berhad. 'In addition, FELCRA Berhad also needs to set a minimum timeline between approval and implementation of the agreement to provide room for adequate risk assessment and review,' the report stated. The report also recommended that improvements be made to amendments of the Acquisition Manual that came into effect in September 2024, such as appointment of qualified external consultants to conduct objective due diligence and market value assessments before making any acquisition decisions, and that the consultant's report must be presented to the board of directors as a vital supporting document in investment decisions. Also, a comprehensive study must be conducted to assess financial aspects encompassing break-even points, return on investment, hidden costs, mortgage liabilities and physical rehabilitation needs before finalising any decision. 'Inspection and certification of the status of moveable access need to be conducted before and during the process of vacant possession for oil palm plantations to ensure ownership of the assets as listed in the agreement. 'Verification of physical assets, preparation of a complete asset register of all farm machinery and facilities must also be carried out as stated in the relevant agreement,' the report stated.
