Coast Guard intercepts a migrant boat with nearly 100 people from Haiti on board
The 99 people were intercepted Thursday about 35 miles north of Cap-Hatien, Haiti, packed into a 35-foot boat that was heading north toward the Turks and Caicos, the Coast Guard said in a statement.
They were returned to their home country Tuesday aboard the Cutter Seneca, the agency said.
'The Coast Guard remains steadfast in our defense of the U.S. maritime borders and approaches with patrols in the Florida Straits, Windward and Mona Passages to interdict unlawful maritime migration attempts before they reach our shores,' Lt. Cmdr. Brent Pearson, Coast Guard liaison officer to U.S. Embassy Port-au-Prince, said in a statement. 'Attempting illegal migration in overloaded, unsafe vessels with no safety equipment is extremely dangerous and puts you and your loved one's lives at risk. Don't take to the sea just to be sent back.'
Since October, the Coast Guard said it has intercepted 412 people from Haiti attempting to leave the country by sea. From Oct. 1, 2024 to Sept. 31, U.S. authorities repatriated 857 people stopped at sea, according to the Coast Guard.

The woman's body was recovered at 12.55pm and the scene was reopened at 2.15pm following extensive enquiries." "It has been confirmed that the woman is aged in her 50s and from the local area. Officers are supporting the woman's family at this difficult time. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner." Scuba diver dies exploring shipwrecks 150-miles off Cape Cod, officials say
Joseph Mazraani, 48, of New Millstone Township, had traveled aboard his 45-foot boat 'Tenacious' with a group of divers, Bristol District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III's office said in a statement. At some point during the dive on Tuesday, Mazraani experienced a 'possible medical emergency,' the statement said. Group members pulled him from the water and attempted lifesaving measures but were unsuccessful, officials said. The Coast Guard and New Bedford police were notified. The vessel began its return to port, arriving at Fleet Marina in New Bedford at 6:00 a.m., officials said.
