Zahid urges youth to explore franchises beyond F&B

The Sun08-05-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi called on youths to explore broader opportunities in other high-potential franchise sectors beyond the food and beverage (F&B) industry.
'The government recognises significant potential in other sectors that should not be overlooked. Our youth must take proactive steps, either individually or in groups, to enhance the quality of their products and services,' he said.
He was speaking at the opening of the ASEAN Franchise Convention (AFC) and Malaysia International Franchise Exhibition (FIM) 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.
Zahid also urged young entrepreneurs to engage with agencies such as the Malaysian Franchise Association (MFA) and the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) to seek support and guidance in developing local products into competitive franchise brands.
'Local products must not only thrive in the domestic market but also be positioned for franchising and international expansion. The government has allocated substantial support for the franchise sector, complemented by a range of financing schemes,' he added.
He noted that the MFA has played an active role in developing a robust local franchise ecosystem poised to penetrate regional markets, particularly within ASEAN.
'The ASEAN market comprises approximately 600 million people. If we can tap just 10 percent of that, we're looking at a potential customer base of 60 million,' he said.
Also present at the event were KUSKOP Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick, Deputy Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan and MFA chairman Datuk Dr Radzali Hassan.
Meanwhile, Radzali said the convention, held from May 7 to 10, brings together more than 160 franchise companies and 250 exhibitors, and is expected to attract over 30,000 visitors, making it one of the largest franchise events in Southeast Asia.
'FIM 2025 showcases a wide range of local and international franchise brands from 16 countries, including China, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, and many more,' he said.
Radzali also expressed hope that the AFC and FIM would serve as catalysts for rapid growth in the national franchise industry, contributing to economic development and strengthening Malaysia's position at both regional and global levels.
Touching on Zahid's call for greater youth participation in entrepreneurship, he said the MFA remains committed to supporting young people as they take their first steps into the business world.
'We have designed numerous entrepreneurship programmes specifically for youth and university students. We hope to see more of them coming forward and actively engaging with the initiatives available.
'The younger generation today is more agile, intelligent, and digitally savvy, a major advantage that should be fully leveraged,' he added.
Radzali also noted that MFA was recently recognised by ASEAN Records as the organiser of the Longest-Running Annual Franchise Exhibition in ASEAN, with 32 consecutive editions of FIM since 1994.
'This recognition is a testament to decades of consistent effort and our role in driving the growth of the regional franchise sector,' he said.

Furniture's tough outlook

Industry in crisis: Workers assembling furniture at a furniture manufacturing plant. Industry players say sector faces domestic, global pressures JOHOR BARU: The furniture sector is struggling under mounting global and domestic pressures, leading to some long-standing manufacturers shutting down after decades of operations, say industry players. Muar Furniture Association (MFA) president Steve Ong said some businesses had ceased operations over the past two years, including several original equipment manufacturers, as they felt the future of the industry was not promising. 'The situation has become increasingly tough for local furniture makers who are already grappling with policies that burden businesses. 'Aside from having to deal with the expanded sales and service tax (SST), the US-imposed tariffs on Malaysian exports are also an added burden for those focused on the American market,' he said in an interview. Ong, whose association represents more than 800 members, pointed out that the higher electricity tariffs and mandatory Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributions for foreign workers are also adding to the pressure. He said MFA has continued to call for a temporary suspension of the SST, electricity tariff hike and EPF contribution for foreigners. Ong also urged the government to provide financial incentives or assistance to help companies transition better. He said that while the government is encouraging automation, many industry players are hesitant to make the change. 'If local furniture makers are forced to shut down or relocate overseas, it will not only affect jobs but the entire supply chain will suffer,' he said, adding that the MFA held a dialogue session with industry players last week to listen to their concerns. Many participants, including a furniture maker who has been in the business for over four decades, lamented about the 'policies that are not business-friendly' which are hurting the economy. Malaysian Furniture Council president Desmond Tan, who is also MFA executive adviser, said the council received over 180 petitions from industry players about the untimely policies. He added that the council had submitted a petition to Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Ghani and met with his deputy Datuk Chan Foong Hin over the matter. 'We have expressed our concerns and requested their help to convey the message to the Prime Minister. 'During the meeting, the deputy minister told us that he would speak to the Finance Ministry about the SST, which we take as a positive step,' he added. Johor, particularly Muar, produces the majority of Malaysia's furniture. The United States was the top destination for Malaysia's furniture last year, followed by Singapore, Australia, Japan and the United Kingdom.

KUSKOP to hold 23-series nationwide E-Invoicing Seminar tour

Ewon gives thumbs up to the event. PENAMPANG (July 22): The Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry (KUSKOP) will implement 23 series of the MADANI Entrepreneur e-Invoicing Seminar nationwide this year, targeting the participation of 20,000 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) entrepreneurs. Its minister, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said the initiative is in line with the government's efforts to accelerate the adoption of the e-Invoicing system among entrepreneurs, which is an early step towards the scaling and modernisation of MSME operations in the country. 'In the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which will begin in 2026, KUSKOP will place strong focus on the MSME entrepreneur scaling agenda, that is, to develop micro enterprises into small enterprises, and small enterprises into businesses that can be listed on Bursa Malaysia. 'This agenda begins with the early step of MSME entrepreneurs adopting the use of e-Invoicing in their businesses. I hope entrepreneurs view this as a potential to scale up their businesses. 'That is why KUSKOP, through its agency the National Entrepreneurship Institute (INSKEN), is organising 23 series of e-Invoicing seminars nationwide this year. In addition, SME Corp is also working together with the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) to support the adoption and implementation of e-Invoicing among MSME entrepreneurs,' he said. He said this while officiating the MADANI Entrepreneur e-Invoicing Seminar at the Sabah Cultural Centre here on Tuesday. Also present were INSKEN Board of Trustees chairman Haji Mustaffa Kamil Ayub, INSKEN Chief Executive Officer Viviantie Sarjuni, INSKEN board members, and heads of agencies under the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry. Ewon said the seminar is part of the ministry's initiative to empower entrepreneurs through understanding and compliance with digital systems, particularly the e-Invoicing system. 'In line with the digitalisation trend and the Malaysia MADANI aspiration, the implementation of e-Invoicing is an important step in increasing business operational efficiency and ensuring transparency and integrity in transactions. 'KUSKOP remains committed to strengthening the national entrepreneurial ecosystem, including expanding access to knowledge, technology, and business support,' he said.
