'Worrying': There's no deadline for Leap Card replacement as NTA starts paying out to firms
The Spanish technology and defence firm Indra Sistemas SA won a single vendor contract in April of 2024 for the development and installation of contactless payments from the National Transport Authority worth €243m, to be paid out over ten years.

that Indra is being paid a 'very significant amount of public money' and that it is 'very worrying that neither the Minister for Transport or the NTA can give us a clear date for this project to be finished'.
'Commuters deserve to know when they will be able to benefit from the contactless system,' O'Gorman added.
In the last quarter of 2024 the NTA paid €1,396,249 to Indra in purchase orders. These were the first purchase orders paid out to the company.
Separate from its contract with Indra, the NTA is also paying for services from the Irish outsourcing firm Abtran for work on the 'next generation ticketing' project.
Abtran works with several state agencies. The firm says that it primarily provides project management, ICT and operations services to the NTA.

It says that its personnel are involved in the implementation of next generation ticketing.
'Assignments are deployed in agreement with the NTA to ensure each resource has the most appropriate skills and experience for the specific needs of the project,' Abtran further states on its site.
The NTA paid €2,511,203 to Abtran for 'Ticketing Technologies, Operations, Project and Programme Management' in the same period, but the NTA has not said how much of this was spent on work for the Leap Card replacement project, and how much was spent for other work the firm provides to the agency.

that not all of that money will be for work on the next generation ticketing project, though it could not clarify the amount that was.
In response to a parliamentary question the NTA said that the initial phase will involve installing over 3,000 new validators across 69 Luas stops, 67 Irish Rail stations, 10 bus depots and more than 1,300 buses in Dublin alone.
It said that several teams will be working on installation, but buses can only be worked on when they are not in use, 'i.e primarily at night or on the weekends', which the NTA said will impact the timeline of the first phase of the project.
'A major effort is being put in by the NTA to ensure that this project is delivered as effectively and expeditiously as possible,' it said, adding that however, it will take 'a number of years to successfully deliver the full solution'.
The NTA said that it will soon be in a better position to provide an 'exact implementation date', when 'certain project planning activities have been completed'.
The NTA did not provide any further comment.

Irish businessman Liam Lynch awarded Freedom of City of London
IRISH businessman Liam Lynch, founder of L Lynch Plant Hire & Haulage, has been awarded the Freedom of the City of London. Tánaiste to meet Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan for annual forum
Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris will meet with Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan in Swansea this morning for the annual Ireland-Wales Forum. It is expected that a new statement of co-operation between both governments, covering the next five years, will be agreed today. The forum was established in 2021, in the aftermath of Brexit, to help strengthen ties between both countries. It aimed to build on an Irish-Welsh regional cooperation agreement that operated when the UK was part of the EU, but which lapsed when the UK left the bloc. The first co-operation agreement was signed in Cardiff in 2021 between former Tánaiste Simon Coveney and former First Minister Mark Drakeford. Previous achievements from the forum include the Greenlink interconnector between Wexford and Pembrokeshire. The new 2030 Statement will establish a new framework for bilateral co-operation until the end of the decade. Speaking ahead of the forum, Tánaiste Simon Harris said that the new shared statement "underlines the breadth of connection between us, across trade, research, energy, culture and language". Ms Morgan described the new statement as a "step forward" in the relationship between both countries. As part of today's forum, both Mr Harris and Ms Morgan will meet with researchers at Swansea University, who are working with research colleagues in Cork and Limerick. They will also meet with the energy company MaresConnect, which is building an interconnector between Wales and Ireland.

The podcaster reveals she met him for the face-to-face conversation over a dinner of halloumi burgers and chicken wings, before the November election. The broadcaster, who is this week's guest on the Under the Grill podcast, said: 'There was no coddle or any of this sort of stuff, even though you think he's such a traditional Dub, don't you? 'I'd say he has better taste than you and I. He's floating around the Mediterranean and he has probably eaten very nicely. He ordered a haloumi burger, and I, embarrassingly, had chicken wings. What an amateur I am. 'He is sophisticated enough – he like his Eggs Benedict. 'I did meet him in town over the course of the general election and he had an old-fashioned Irish breakfast at lunchtime.' Hutch walked free from the Special Criminal Court in 2023 after the State unsuccessfully sought to prosecute him for his involvement in a gun attack at the Regency Hotel in 2016. He is currently under investigation by authorities in Spain for alleged money laundering. He narrowly missed out on securing a Dáil seat in last year's general election. Ms Tallant said: 'He is quite distinguished looking: he's unusual looking and he had kind of shaved his beard, and he has those sharky eyes. 'The day he came out of prison, he had the full beard and looked like something from Castaway. ADVERTISEMENT 'It just added to the whole drama of everything when he walked free that day. He has differing styles and I don't think he has worn the beard since then. But he's an interesting character. 'The Monk interview was a mega success with our listeners. There are comedy sketches about him now. 'His voice is so funny. He shocks you in a funny way when he speaks. He does have a star quality: for a criminal, he does have some charisma. 'The Monk interview is the biggest that was ever broadcast in Ireland. If you look at the figures properly, they're up there with the Joe Rogan [podcast]. 'It's off the scale.
