Gunfire erupts during Mpumalanga liquor store robbery: 2 arrested, cop wounded
Two suspects, aged 37 and 40, were arrested during an armed robbery that escalated into a shoot-out with the police in Leandra in Mpumalanga.
Ridge Times reports that the shoot-out, which happened on Tuesday, saw a 38-year-old police constable wounded in the crossfire.
According to Mpumalanga Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, police officers from Leandra were conducting routine patrols in the area when they encountered a robbery in progress. The suspects allegedly opened fire on the officers, who retaliated. It was during this exchange that the constable was shot in the hip. He was transported to hospital for medical treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a gang of about seven armed men, wearing police reflector vests, entered a liquor outlet in Leandra. They allegedly identified themselves as police officials on duty, investigating counterfeit liquor. The suspects reportedly questioned the owner and spent nearly an hour at the premises before trying to carry out an armed robbery.
At that point, members of the Leadra Visible Policing unit arrived on the scene, prompting the shoot-out.
Some of the suspects managed to evade arrest during the gunfire and fled, abandoning a white BMW 3 Series, with a false registration number, and a white Ford Focus that had reportedly been stolen in Bronkhorstspruit in March. Both vehicles were seized and taken to the police station for further investigation.
Believing that not all suspects had fled, police conducted a search of the area, which led to the arrest of two suspects who were found hiding in an enclosed storeroom. They were charged with attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of suspected stolen vehicles.
Crime scene experts are continuing to process the area, and further developments are expected as the investigation unfolds.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Leslie Periodical Court tomorrow.
The remaining suspects are still at large.
Acting provincial commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the arrests and condemned the attack on law enforcement.
'Attacking police officers will be dealt with accordingly. We will not rest until the remaining suspects are brought to justice,' he said.

Suspect nabbed for eThekwini diesel theft
AN investigation is underway after eThekwini Municipality employees allegedly colluded with a private citizen to steal diesel, at the expense of the city and ratepayers. According to the director of the City Integrity and Investigations Directorate, Jimmy Ngcobo, the accused was posing as a municipal employee to allow him free reign over the pumps, which would eventually earn him around R78 000 a day. He allegedly did rounds everyday filling diesel at over 15 petrol stations around the city. 'The culprit had four vehicles fitted with a 750-litre fuel tank at the base of each single cab van. The diesel was stored in these tanks and resold. Each vehicle generated about R78 000 a day,' said Ngcobo. He said the accused was caught red-handed, dressed in municipal uniform, while fraudulently filling diesel at one of the petrol stations where the city's fleet refuel. The sting operation was conducted with assistance from the Metro Police and private company Reaction Unit South Africa. Ngcobo said a forensic investigation was launched and it found that a fuel master, belonging to the Water and Sanitation Directorate, was being used by privately owned cars. 'The fuel master being used was for a vehicle that has been stationary for a long time and is going to be disposed of. The suspect had duplicated the number plate and branding on the side of the car doors to make it look similar to other municipal cars.' He said that in this instance, municipal employees were working with external people to conduct fraud and corruption. 'The municipality has suffered a great financial loss, which is why we are calling on various stakeholders to report fraud and corruption when they see it happening,' said Ngcobo as he called for organised crime to be dealt with severely. The man was arrested and charged for fraud and corruption. He appeared in court and the matter was remanded until August. Man killed in Pinetown head-on collision
A MAN believed to be in his 30s was died following a head-on collision on the M7 last night, Friday, June 27. The accident, which left two other people injured, happened on the Durban-bound lane near the Winston Churchill offramp in the Pinetown area. Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found that the light motor vehicle driver was entrapped in the wreckage.
