McErlean and Treacy finish eighth in Portugal

With the best performance of their maiden WRC Rally1 season, Kilrea's Josh McErlean and Killeagh's Eoin Treacy brought their M-Sport Ford Puma Rally1 home in eighth place in the Vodafone Rally de Portugal, the fifth round of the World Rally Championship. Gradually building their pace over the 23 stages and watched by some half a million spectators over three days, the Irish duo were the top-performing M-Sport Ford crew.
The rally was won by French driver Sebastien Ogier (Toyota GR Yaris Rally1) for a record seventh time as the Toyota team notched a sixth successive victory in Portugal. Estonian Ott Tanak was controlling proceedings until his Hyundai i20 N Rally1 lost time on Saturday's penultimate stage that dropped him to third. He recovered to finish second, 8.7s behind Ogier and 3.5s ahead of Finland's Kalle Rovanpera (Toyota GR Yaris Rally1).
Tanak struggled on Saturday's opening three stages, suffering a puncture on SS13 some six kilometres from the stage end. Nevertheless, he managed to retain the lead - 11.8s ahead of Ogier with Rovanpera a further 24s behind in third. Tanak remained in control and increased his lead over Ogier to 13.9s but it went awry on the day's penultimate test (Amarante2) when his Hyundai developed a power steering issue midway through the 22.1km test. He dropped some 45s and slipped to third.
Eight-time world champion Ogier inherited top spot and ended the penultimate leg with a 27.6s lead over his Toyota Gazoo Racing team mate Kalle Rovanpera with the unfortunate Tanak 8.5s further behind in third.
'It's not the way you want to win any fight,' said Ogier. 'We were both pushing really hard - that's the game." Tanak said, 'It's part of the game, I guess. Very unfortunate, but we gave everything from our side.'
Rovanpera eclipsed teammate Takamoto Katsuta on SS14, the latter then dropping behind Hyundai's Thierry Neuville, who slotted into fourth on the penultimate stage. Having lost time on Friday as he opened the roads, championship leader Elfyn Evans struggled to find any rhythm even though he had a better road position, he was seventh - 17.5s behind team mate Sami Pajari.
McErlean/Treacy moved up to eighth, edging past M-Sport Ford team mate Gregoire Munster on the opening stage with the margin increasing to 28.5s at the end of the leg. "I think you have to do a mind shift to not care, but obviously you want to protect the car and try to get the experience, so it's kind of the balance between saving it and going at it." said McErlean.
Tanak won all but the first of Sunday's six stages, in the process reeling in Rovanpera for second as he claimed ten extra championship points, five each from Super Sunday and the Power Stage. Sixth placed Evans still leads the series - 30 points from Rovanpera.
At the finish McErlean added, "Crazy rally as always, so nice to come to the finish and have some good times as well. Big thanks to the whole team, because four cars (M-Sport) without any problems is some achievement."
Oliver Solberg (Skoda Fabia RS Rally2) won the WRC2 category, his seventh such victory in the category. Donegal's Eamonn Kelly and Monaghan's Conor Mohan (Ford Fiesta Rally3) were as high as second in the Junior WRC category until a double puncture cost them time, they eventually finished seventh.
Meanwhile, the Irish pairing of Killarney's Alan Ring and Newcestown's Adrian Deasy took the Munster Joinery liveried BMW M3 to a sixth place finish in Rallye d'Antibes Historic Rally, a counting round of the European Historic Rally Championship. They made a fine start to the nine stage rally and occupied second overall after the opening stage 10.23km stage. Weather conditions posed a tough challenge as they varied considerably from the service park to the stages that were some 50km away. They finished Friday's leg in eighth spot and made up two places on Saturday's stages.
The legendary Jari-Matti Latvala took a lead of a minute a minute and 6.5s into the final stage where his Toyota Celica ST185 suffered an electrical glitch that forced his retirement with French driver Tom Pieri (BMW M3 E30) best placed to take advantage.

The Irish crew of Josh McErlean/Eoin Treacy (Ford Puma Rally1) will begin Saturday's second leg of Secto Rally Finland in ninth place after a steady run through Friday's nine stages. Out in front in a tense battle and having taken the outright lead on SS3, Finland's Kalle Rovanpera (Toyota GR Yaris Rally1), who has never won his home event, leads the way - 4.9s seconds ahead of reigning World champion Thierry Neuville (Hyundai i20 Rally1) whose team mate Adrian Fourmaux is 2.8s seconds further behind in third. Pre-event championship leader Ott Tanak (Hyundai i20 Rally1) took a 1.3s lead on Thursday evening's opening Harju street stage but it was Japan's Takamoto Katsuta (with his Fintona co-driver Aaron Johnston) and Rovanpera that shared top spot after Friday's opener before Rovanpera won the next two stages that included the fast Saarikas stage - a reversal of previous years. He arrived at the service park with a 4.4s advantage over Fourmaux with Finland's Sami Pajari (Toyota) just a tenth of a second behind in third, the latter also winning two of the morning's stages. Katsuta in fourth was followed by Neuville, who like many others, was of the opinion that the stages were too fast. "It's just pure taking risks.' Eight time World champion and last year's event winner Sebastien Ogier, who was trying to find a rhythm, concurred. "The roads are almost too fast in places - they're just flat out everywhere, not the most enjoyable in places." Meanwhile, the M-Sport trio of Martiņs Sesks, Josh McErlean and Gregoire Munster were having their own battle with Sesks leading the way 6.8s ahead of McErlean. Munster had a major slide on SS3 and overshot on SS4 and was 21.4s behind McErlean, who commented, "Takes a bit to get your head around, it goes better than you expect because everything's flat out, bit more commitment needed. "It should be easier (through the second pass) - onboards to look at where you're losing (time)." Rain made the afternoon stages tricky and difficult - each of the four stages in the Finnish countryside had a different winner before Fourmaux won the short Harju street stage as a composed Rovanpera, who admitted he took a few risks, continued to lead. Championship leader Ott Tanak, who had the task of opening the roads, ended the day in tenth - his Hyundai snapped under braking some 2km into SS7 and the front right took a heavy impact after it hit a tree, however, he was quickly back up to speed. Meanwhile, Donegal's Eamonn Kelly/Conor Mohan (Ford Fiesta Rally3) are second in the Junior WRC category - 14.9s behind leaders Taylor Gill/Daniel Brkic, the Irish crew were quickest on SS3. EVs accounted for 25% of new car sales in Wicklow in July but it was just 10% in Mayo

All- electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid cars accounted for 34 per cent of the new cars registered in July, making them the most popular powertrains for 252 registrations. Sales of EVs and PHEVs are ahead of petrol versions on 26 per cent of the market, and diesels on 17 per cent. Conventional (non-plug-in) hybrids had a 22.5 per cent share. Overall, 26,787 new 252-registration cars were registered last month, up 4.3 per cent on July 2024. For the year to date, registrations total 108,531, an increase of 3.7 per cent. While EVs account for 17 per cent of the market, popularity varies sharply across the State. In Wicklow, they hold a 25 per cent market share – the county's best-selling type of car – but in Mayo it's just 10.3 per cent. Shares are 11.5 per cent in Donegal, 9.7 per cent in Roscommon and under 9 per cent in Leitrim. The top-selling model remains Hyundai's Tucson (4,220), followed by Toyota's Yaris Cross (3,171), Škoda's Octavia (3,115) and Toyota's RAV4 (3,072). In the EV segment, Volkswagen tops the chart with 2,690 sales, ahead of Kia (2,338), Hyundai (2,171) and Tesla (1,719). The most popular EV models are the VW ID.4, Kia EV3 and Tesla Model 3. Among the Chinese brands, BYD leads with 1,952 registrations. While the reborn MG brand – now under Chinese control – has 1,240, there's a big gap between these and the next new Chinese brand, Xpeng, with just 117 registrations. At the premium and luxury end of the market, BMW leads with 4,222 registrations, just ahead of Audi with 4,060. Mercedes-Benz has 2,650, Volvo has 1,716, and Lexus 1,120. Jaguar has registered just six new cars so far in 2025. In a sign of the dominance of SUVs in all segments of the Irish market, BMW's best-selling model is the X5 with 780 registrations, three times as many as the once-dominant 3 Series. BMW also sold 129 of its high-performance M5s this year, while Porsche recorded 22 sales for its 911, bringing its overall new car sales this year to 362 and putting it ahead of brands like Jeep, Smart, DS, Polestar and Alfa Romeo and just three car sales short of Honda. In the commercial vehicle market, often a barometer for economic activity in the State, van sales are static, down less than 1 per cent at 24,945 so far this year. However, sales of heavy goods vehicles are down 16.5 per cent to 2,349.

McErlean buzzing for legendary 'Grand Prix on gravel'

Motorsport The Jyvaskyla based Secto Rally Finland is one of the most iconic events on the World Rally Championship calendar. It's part of the continuing Rally1 journey for the Irish crew of Josh McErlean and Eoin Treacy and their M-Sport team boss Richard Millener wants the Irish duo to "push forward" on one of the fastest gravel events of the series, dubbed "a Grand Prix on gravel". The pair's ninth place finish in Rally Estonia was another important progression but Millener wants more, not just from the Kilrea/Killeagh combination but their teammates as well. "Rally Finland is a legendary event and while it's always a huge challenge, it's also an incredible opportunity for our young line-up to shine. Gregoire (Munster), Josh (McErlean) and Martins (Sesks) have all been consistently learning throughout the season and Finland will test every aspect of their driving. We're looking forward to seeing how they adapt and push forward, we're confident we can see some positive results in Finland.' In his fourth outing here, McErlean is relatively familiar with the terrain in Finland (round nine of the WRC) that includes the classic stages of Ouninpohja and Paijala, while Treacy had his maiden trip with philanthropist John Coyne, the man largely responsible for the MI Academy members' presence at the top tier in World rallying. McErlean said, 'Rally Finland is an event I've been looking forward to ever since we got the opportunity to compete at Rally1 level. It's a special feeling to be taking on these iconic Finnish roads in such a car. This weekend is about taking a step forward, trusting in ourselves, committing fully to the pace, and showing what we can do with this package. The key will be confidence and rhythm and I'm ready to enjoy every moment of the ride through the forests.' Up front, the title race continues to gather momentum as Estonian Ott Tanak (Hyundai i20 N Rally1) holds a slender single point advantage over Welsh ace Elfyn Evans (Toyota GR Yaris Rally1). As Tanak is first on the road today (Friday), however, unlike Evans, who led for several rounds, it isn't the disadvantage it was earlier in the season. A winner in Finland in 2018, 2019 and 2022 Tanak knows what to expect on a rally where the average speed is 125km/hr. 'It's all about pure performance. Setup is crucial to performing well because of the mix of high speeds and jumps, you need grip and stability and to be absolutely precise with where you place the car at all times." Evans is a double victor in Rally Finland and running behind Tanak, he will seek to push home that advantage as he welcomes his team mate and eight time WR champion Sebastien Ogier back to championship action, their team mate Kalle Rovanpera seeks to win his home event for the first time. In the Junior WRC, Eamonn Kelly/Conor Mohan, who are fifth, warmed up for the event with a second place finish in last week's HYAcenter Ralli - just 0.3 shy of the winners. *** Meanwhile, the FIA and WRC Promoter unveiled the 2026 WRC calendar that has 14 rounds across four continents. The rounds are: 1. Rallye Monte-Carlo (January 22-25); 2. Rally Sweden (February 12-15); 3. Safari Rally Kenya (March 12-15): 4. Croatia Rally (April 9-12); 5. Rally Islas Canarias (April 23-26); 6. Vodafone Rally de Portugal (May 7-10); 7. Rally Japan (May 28-31); 8. EKO Acropolis Rally (June 25- 28); 9. Rally Estonia (July 16-19); 10. Secto Rally Finland (July30 -August2); 11. Rally Saudi Arabia (November 11-14). *** On the home front it seems the proposed Galway Mini Stage Rally (October) remains in a state of flux. Amid discussions between the Munster, Skibbereen and Galway clubs, it appeared that a November date was more appropriate and was set to get the green light at this week's Motor Sport Council meeting. However, objections from their counterparts in Donegal and Killarney seems to have jettisoned that particular proposal - for the moment at least.
