Keir Starmer responds to death of Liverpool star Diogo Jota - 'devastating'
The 28-year-old footballer died following a road traffic accident in Spain on Thursday morning.
Pedro Proenca, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, later confirmed that Jota's brother, Andre, 26, also died in the accident. The news comes just under two weeks after the Portugal international got married to his long-term girlfriend Rute Cardoso, with whom he has three children. They tied the knot on 22 June.
Responding to the news, Mr Starmer said his death was "devastating news" and that millions of Liverpool football fans would be shocked.
Asked about Jota's death while speaking in east London, the Prime Minister told The Mirror: "Let me start with Jota, because this is devastating news.

"I'm sure I speak for everyone in saying our first thoughts are going to be with his family and his friends in particular. But there are millions of Liverpool fans, but also football fans, and non-fans, who will also be shocked by this.
"I think Liverpool Football Club have just put a statement out as I understand it, but it is devastating, and it is really important we bear in mind just how difficult a period this will be for his friends and for his family."
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy also paid tribute to the Liverpool player telling the Commons: "We just received the heartbreaking news a moment ago before we came in to the chamber that he lost his life at just 28 years of age."
Ms Nandy said the whole House "is heartbroken by this news", adding: "I wanted to send our sympathies to his family on behalf of the whole House."
Shadow culture minister Saqib Bhatti had earlier said: "As we came into the chamber today there was tragic news of the passing of Diogo Jota, the Liverpool footballer, at the age of 28. So can I put our condolences to the friends and families and Liverpool fans across the world on that passing."
Earlier, Liverpool confirmed the devastating news in a statement, which read: 'Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.
'Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre's family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.'

Liverpool owners 'in talks over takeover of £100m-valued LaLiga club' - with FSG pushing to strike deal after backing the Reds big-spending summer
Liverpool 's owners FSG's big spending summer is set to continue with talks reportedly ongoing over a £100million takeover of a LaLiga club. FSG have overseen a summer of spending at Liverpool, with the Premier League champions having committed around £295million already in bringing in stats including Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike. The ownership are now reportedly set to press ahead with another significant outlay, amid reports they are in talks over a £100million takeover of Spanish side Getafe. Reports last month stated that the LaLiga side had been identified as the 'ideal club' for FSG to begin developing their multi-club model. The Athletic have reported that talks are now underway between FSG and Getafe's president Angel Torres over a staged takeover of the club. Torres had publicly denied Getafe were for sale last month and was previously said to have valued the club at £160million. His valuation is now reportedly around £100m, with talks said to be ongoing with Liverpool's owners FSG. FSG's pursuit of a second club to go along with reigning Premier League champions Liverpool has been ongoing in recent months. The pursuit among the reasons Michael Edwards returned as FSG's chief executive of football. 'It was vital for me that, if I did return, it had to be with renewed vigour and energy,' Edwards said last year. 'In practice, this means having fresh challenges and opportunities. As such, one of the biggest factors in my decision is the commitment to acquire and oversee an additional club, growing this area of their organisation. 'I believe that to remain competitive, investment and expansion of the current football portfolio is necessary.' Edwards was placed in charge of overseeing the identification of a second club, alongside former Boston Red Sox chief Theo Epstein. Reports earlier this year suggested FSG were pursuing a deal to buy Malaga, before cooling their interest amid legal hurdles. Getafe are currently in the process of redeveloping their stadium to boost its capacity Initial reports last month claimed FSG believed Getafe are the ideal club after conducting feasibility studies of several clubs, including Levante, Elche, Espanyol, Valladolid, Malaga and Bordeaux. Getafe's status as an established top flight club, the potential to develop players and the club's location in Madrid are reportedly among the factors in favour of the potential purchase. The club are also in the middle of a stadium redevelopment, which will modernise and take their Estadio Coliseum ground to a 19,000 capacity. Getafe's owner Torres, however, has claimed he will leave the club when the stadium redevelopment is complete in December 2027. Getafe have been a LaLiga club for the past eight seasons and finished 13th in the 2024-25 campaign. Next season will mark Getafe's the 21st season out of the last 22 that the club have been in the Spanish top flight. The multi-club ownership model became widely popular due to the success of City Football Group, which has included 13 teams with Man City at the centre.
