McGregor addicted to spotlight, not fighting: Dustin Poirier

Express Tribune28-02-2025
Dustin Poirier has cast doubt over Conor McGregor's return to the UFC, questioning whether the former two-division champion is still committed to fighting.
McGregor has not competed since his trilogy bout against Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021, where he suffered a broken leg in a doctor's stoppage TKO loss. Prior to that, Poirier had knocked out McGregor at UFC 257 in January 2021.
The Irish fighter was scheduled to face Michael Chandler at UFC 303 in June 2024 but withdrew due to a broken pinky toe.
Poirier, who is preparing for what he calls his retirement fight, does not expect to share the octagon with McGregor again.
'Nah, because if I fought him again it would just be for the money,' Poirier said on the 'Outta Pocket with RGIII' podcast. 'It felt so nice – I whipped him twice. It would be just for the money and the money would be incredible. I don't know if he's ever going to come back.'
McGregor has remained active in the public eye, promoting businesses and making appearances at events such as Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC). Poirier believes his former opponent may be more invested in maintaining his celebrity status than making a UFC comeback.
'I was his last two fights. That was years ago, and he still hasn't fought,' Poirier said. 'I just think he's one of those guys who is addicted to the limelight. He just wants to be in the mix and in social media. Maybe he does come back, but I just think that he has an addiction to the light.'
Despite his scepticism, Poirier acknowledged McGregor's unique ability to compete at the highest level, should he regain his drive.
'Look, I love to talk trash on Conor, but if anybody can put it all together and come back, if he can find that passion and that fire, and put it together, this guy can,' Poirier said.
'I'm not saying anybody, but this guy can. He's special. He has something special, but only he knows when he looks in the mirror if he can really do it again. But if he believes it, I believe he could.'
McGregor has yet to announce his next fight, while Poirier continues to prepare for his final bout before stepping away from the sport.

Jon Jones responds to Dana White's comments at UFC 318

Jon Jones has expressed disappointment after UFC President Dana White voiced concerns over booking him for the proposed UFC White House card in 2026. The event, which would take place on Independence Day, is seen as a major opportunity for the UFC, but White's hesitation to trust Jones due to his past troubles has sparked tension. In a post-UFC 318 news conference, White admitted that while Jones is undeniably talented, he's concerned about his history of legal issues. "It's not even about him winning the belt," White said. "You know how I feel about him. I can't risk putting him in big positions and have something go wrong, especially with the White House card." Jones, who has had multiple controversies throughout his career, has had a rocky relationship with the UFC and its management. His refusal to fight Chael Sonnen on short notice, causing the cancellation of UFC 151, his hit-and-run accident leading to his removal from UFC 187, and a series of failed drug tests ahead of UFC 200 and 214 have all contributed to his troubled reputation. Despite these setbacks, Jones' return to fighting was reignited after President Donald Trump announced the possibility of hosting a UFC event at the White House. Jones quickly expressed his desire to headline the card, initially receiving support from White, who even suggested a potential showdown between Jones and interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall. However, White's recent comments have cast doubt on whether Jones will be entrusted with such a monumental opportunity. In response, Jones took to social media, expressing his disappointment but reaffirming his commitment to the sport. 'I heard the comments made at last night's press conference,' Jones wrote on X (formerly Twitter). 'While I was a little disappointed, I'm still in the UFC's drug testing pool, staying sharp, and continuing to train like a professional.' I heard the comments made at last night's press conference. While I was a little disappointed, I'm still in the UFC's drug testing pool, staying sharp, and continuing to train like a professional. I'll be ready for whatever comes next. In a recent interview, I shared that the… — Jonny Meat (@JonnyBones) July 20, 2025 Jones went on to stress the personal significance of the opportunity, stating that fighting at the White House would give him a greater sense of purpose beyond paychecks and titles. 'Fighting for my country gives me a greater purpose,' he said, adding that he's motivated by the chance to further his legacy. Jones' response suggests he remains committed to making a return to the UFC, with his eyes set on an iconic moment at the White House, an event which is shaping up to be the biggest in UFC's entire history.

Conor McGregor next fight confirmed? The Notorious confirms he's joined UFC anti-doping pool for UFC White House

Conor McGregor is signalling his intentions to make a UFC return after a four-year hiatus. The former two-division champion, who last fought in 2021, has announced he is back in the UFC's anti-doping program to prepare for a potential appearance on a historic fight card at the White House in 2026. In an interview with The Schmo following a BKFC press conference in Florida, McGregor confirmed his re-entry into the program, stating, "They're testing me. I'm in the pool. I thought that's what the pools were for, jumping in and out, but I'm back in the pool. So get ready and stay ready because damage will be done. Oval office. White House card." The event, planned to coincide with the America 250 celebrations, was proposed by President Donald Trump, who expressed interest in hosting a UFC card at the White House. UFC president Dana White later confirmed that discussions for the event were already underway, with fighters lining up to participate. McGregor's return to the anti-doping program comes after a series of setbacks in recent years. After suffering a severe leg injury in 2021, McGregor temporarily withdrew from the UFC's drug testing pool. He re-entered the program in 2023 while preparing for a bout against Michael Chandler, a fight that was later cancelled due to a broken pinky toe. Though McGregor has been tested multiple times in 2024, UFC anti-doping records indicate he has not undergone testing in 2025. This gap suggests he may have once again opted out of the program earlier this year. However, with the White House card not scheduled until at least July 2026, McGregor has ample time to comply with the necessary six months of drug testing required for a return to competition. While McGregor's participation in the event is far from guaranteed, his latest announcement adds fuel to the speculation surrounding his UFC comeback. Fans now await further developments on whether McGregor will indeed fight on this landmark card.

Dustin Poirier confirms Lil Wayne walkout at UFC 318 ahead of BMF title fight against Max Holloway

Dustin Poirier won't be the only New Orleans icon walking to the cage for the UFC 318 main event on Saturday at the Smoothie King Center. After teasing it in recent weeks, Poirier (30-9 MMA, 22-8 UFC) confirmed Wednesday that rap legend Lil Wayne will walk out with him for his final UFC appearance. However, Poirier said he's not straying from his traditional walkout track. ter'It will be a little bit of James Brown, a little bit of Wayne,' Poirier told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a pre-fight news conference. 'Yeah, Wayne's walking out with me. … I have to [stick with the James Brown song]. I've paid the cost to be the boss. On my last one, I can't go that far away from it. I need to hear that. I need to feel that vibe before I fight someone.' Lil Wayne has long been a vocal UFC supporter and an avid Poirier fan, often posting about fights on social media. His appearance marks a rare celebrity walkout moment, though it's unclear if he'll perform during the entrance. Historically, the UFC has discouraged live walkout performances, with a few exceptions — most notably at UFC 189, when Conor McGregor walked out to Sinead O'Connor singing 'Foggy Dew.' More recently, celebrities like Jack Black, Kyle Gass (UFC 296), and Mark Zuckerberg (UFC 298) have accompanied fighters. Poirier, 36, will face Max Holloway for the BMF title in Saturday's main event, airing on ESPN+ pay-per-view.
