Row over sound system disrupts Rath Yatra

Kanpur: Following a dispute between police and organisers regarding the use of sound system, the historic and religious Rath Yatra could not commence on Friday. The Panki Mahant announced that he would self-immolate if the sub-inspector of Naya Ganj police outpost was not suspended.
On his appeal, the traders of Nayaganj and nearby markets closed their shops. Followers and political party volunteers sat on dharna at Nayaganj crossing in support of Mahant.
According to Mahant Jitendra Das and Krishna Das of Jagannath temple, before the Rath Yatra could begin, police officials arrived and instructed that only two speakers should be used in the band. Organisers opposed this and during the conversation, police misbehaved with them.
Kanpur Police commissionerate on Thursday had implemented the provisions of section 163 BNS . The provision states that the directions of Allahabad and Lucknow high court regarding the use of loud speaker should be followed in letter and spirit. Using more than 2 loud speakers with in the limits of police commissioneate will have to obtain prior permission . Meanwhile, supporters and volunteers gathered and raised anti-police slogans.
When senior police officials tried to pacify them, the demand for the inspector's suspension was reiterated. In the meantime, SP MLA Amitabh Bajpai also arrived with his supporters and joined the agitators. The agitating crowd recited 'Hanuman Chalisa' and Panki Mahant appealed to traders to close the market.
General secretary of the temple committee, Vivek Gupta alleged that Badshahi Naqa inspector had thrashed the sound system operator with a lathi and abused both him and Panki Mahant.
Senior police officials also arrived at the spot and tried to convince Panki Mahant and others, but Mahant and his followers were adamant and clearly stated that if Badshahi Naqa sub-inspector was not suspended, Mahant would self-immolate at Naya Ganj crossing.
Later, the station in-charge of Badshahi Naka was suspended.
Deputy Commissioner of Police East, Satyajit Gupta, announced the resumption of the Shobha Yatra. "We immediately suspended the in-charge of Badshahi Naka police station. He was accused of misbehaving and using abusive language with the organisers of the Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra."

Delhi: Man on scooter dies after throat slit by Chinese manjha
A 22-year-old man died after his throat was slit by a banned Chinese manjha — a sharp string used for flying kites — while he was riding his scooter near Bara Hindu Rao Hospital in North Delhi on Friday evening. Chinese manjha, which is coated with glass, metal, or other sharp materials, has been banned in the Capital since 2017. Police said the victim, Yash Goswami, a resident of Karawal Nagar, was on his way home when he came in contact with the sharp thread near the Rani Jhansi flyover. 'Goswami suffered a deep cut on his neck, causing him to collapse on the spot. He was rushed to the hospital by passersby, where he was declared dead on arrival,' a police officer said. Goswami used to run an auto parts shop in Karol Bagh. He was alone at the time of the incident but was wearing a helmet, the officer added. Police said a case under Section 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the BNS has been registered against unknown persons at Bara Hindu Rao police station. 'The crime scene was inspected by the forensics team, and strands of Chinese manjha were recovered from the body as well as from the scooter,' another officer said. This is not the first incident of Chinese manja claiming lives in the Capital. In July 2023, in West Delhi's Paschim Vihar, a seven-year-old girl lost her life after the thread slit her neck while she travelling with her parents on a scooter. Last year, in August, a 47-year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Delhi Traffic Police and a 34-year-old businessman were injured by the abrasive string in two separate but similar incidents in Northeast Delhi. Cracking down on the illegal stocking of Chinese manja, the Delhi Police Crime Branch had conducted a raid in Rohini in August 2024. During the raid, they recovered around 12,000 reels of illegal Chinese manja and arrested three people for stocking it. Police also stated that they had arrested 79 individuals and registered 78 FIRs across various parts of Delhi in connection with the possession of Chinese manja. The officer noted that from time to time, police conduct raids against the illegal manufacturing and sale of the dangerous strings.

New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Friday flagged off 100 Devi electric buses from the newly built Narela bus depot, with a striking change—the colour has been changed from green to saffron. Traditionally, green signifies eco-friendly practices, and the colour switch has stirred up a debate. AAP Delhi convener Saurabh Bharadwaj said, "BJP wants to hurt Hindu sentiments by painting Devi buses saffron. Stains of vomit, paan, spit and mucus on buses will offend Hindu faith." Defending the move, Gupta said, "Delhi is vibrant and colourful…so, as an experiment, green and orange buses have been introduced." Gupta emphasised govt's commitment to strengthening public transport and building a cleaner, greener and more connected capital. "We promised to modernise every bus depot and terminus in Delhi, and construct new ones to ensure seamless, safe and widespread transport access. Today's terminus and Devi buses stand testimony to that commitment." She added that the Rs 2.63-crore depot was completed in just 90 days, reflecting govt's efficiency and dedication. 2am operation: Thieves target truck transporting Hayabusa bikes, flee with mirrors & batteries in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: A group of thieves recently targeted a truck transporting motorcycles from Haryana. Their primary aim was to steal a Suzuki Hayabusa, but when unsuccessful, they resorted to taking its mirrors, batteries, and key set. The perpetrators also made off with the truck driver's mobile phone and money. Nanda Lal, 45, a resident of Dungarpur in Rajasthan, is working as a truck driver for a transport company. He was assigned to transport Suzuki Hayabusa bikes from Haryana to two motor vehicle dealer godowns: one is Apple Auto Agency in Banashankari and another Aryan Auto Agency in Bidarahalli. Accordingly, he loaded the bikes in the truck and left Haryana on June 13. He came to Bengaluru on the evening of June 22 and delivered the bikes to Apple Auto Agency. When he was heading to Bidarahalli, he lost his way near East Point Hospital in Virgonagar. As it was 2am, there were hardly any people on the road. He parked the vehicle on the roadside, left the key in the truck and went to the hospital premises to get directions to Bidarahalli. Nanda searched for the truck in the surrounding area, in vain. He managed to reach Aryan Auto Agency in the early hours of June 23. He met agency employee Jagadish and informed him about the incident. He borrowed Jagadish's phone and informed the truck owner. He tracked the location of the truck to Gundur village near Hoskote with the help of GPS. Nanda and Jagadish rushed to a playground in Gundur. They found the miscreants had attempted to steal a bike from the container but failed to unload it. They damaged both sides of the bike and the silencer apart from stealing the mirrors, batteries, and the key set. They also stole the driver's phone and Rs 3,000 from his wallet. A case was registered under BNS section 303 (theft) at Avalahally police station. Police are analysing the CCTV footage of the roads through which the miscreants drove the truck to Gundur. "We have got some clues and efforts are on to nab them. We suspect the miscreants must have known about the truck driver carrying the bikes. The bike's starting price is over Rs 15 lakh," an officer said.
