Mardy Fish comments on Chiefs TE Travis Kelce's appearance at the 2024 U.S. Open

This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to retired tennis star Mardy Fish about defending his tournament title in this weekend's American Century Championship, which will take place July 11-13 at Edgewood Tahoe. He also shared his thoughts on today's American tennis stars and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce's viral visit to the U.S. Open last year.
"I mean, the vibes are always high, right? This is such a cool week," said Fish, "American Century does such a good job of treating us so well, including the family and everything. So we kind of treat it as a little mini vacation as well. I want to play the golf course well, but the kiddos come, and we have such a blast. So, the vibes are always high. So yeah, if you're not having fun, something's wrong."
The two-time American Century champion discussed today's American tennis stars and expressed optimism for the future of the sport.
"I mean, our women are awesome. Our women have won both majors this year, the Australian Open and the French Open. In the men's, we had two American men in the quarters of Wimbledon, and Taylor Fritz is in the semis, playing Carlos Alcaraz," said Fish, "I don't even know what their scheduling is over there. I haven't watched much of it. I'm sort of removed from it now. I certainly keep an eye on the guys I had the privilege of being their Davis Cup captain, and players like Frances Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Ben Shelton, a phenomenal player too, often show up in the big tournaments. So American tennis is a good spot."
The former American No. 1 in the ATP rankings understands the popularity of tennis, especially during major championship tournaments. He commented on Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes, and Brittany Mahomes' visit to the 2024 U.S. Open in New York City.
"I mean, that U.S. Open final is an interesting one; you get a lot of people from all walks of life, in terms of entertainment, sports, world, and stuff, sort of, who's going to show up, Travis (Kelce) and Taylor (Swift) coming out. That was cool to have them out there," said Fish, "so they can see how athletic some of the tennis players are. And, getting someone like Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz out there, two contrasting styles of play, one with a huge serve and one with just unbelievable groundstrokes and movement. So, yeah, it's just awesome for other sports to go and see if you're an athlete from another sport, going and checking out a different sport. It's always fascinating to see how they prepare and how focused they are during the process. Therefore, there is a great deal of mutual respect on both sides. When you watch someone in their craft, someone else watches another sport."
The annual golf tournament awards $750,000 in prize money, much of which the celebrity players donate to local and national charities. Over the years, nearly $8 million has been donated to non-profit causes. Network television exposure on NBC and a first-place prize of $150,000 make the celebrity tournament one of the most prestigious in the golf world.

Former NHL player Joe Pavelski leads American Century celebrity golf tournament

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Nev. -- Former NHL player Joe Pavelski scored 23 points under a modified Stableford system to take the first-round lead Friday in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe. 'The round was good,' said Pavelski, second last year behind former tennis player Mardy Fish. 'Obviously, the first tee and first-round excitement was there. Nerves were there.' Former NBA player and coach Vinny Del Negro, the 2021 winner in the celebrity tournament, was a point back. Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, the 2023 winner, was another point behind at 21 with former soccer player Taylor Twellman. Carolina Panthers receiver Adam Thielen had 19 points, and former NFL quarterback Tony Romo — a three-time winner — was at 18 with Oklahoma City Thunder player Alex Caruso. Fish, also the 2020 winner, was at 17 with former pitcher John Smoltz and former LPGA Tour star Annika Sorenstam. Charles Barkley holed out for eagle from 88 yards on the par-4 second in a nine-point round. He was tied for 24th in the 90-player field. 'I had a great day today,' Barkley said. 'I had a lot of fun. I played with Nate Bargatze and Larry the Cable Guy, two of the best dudes. But I've put a lot of time and effort in, and I was very happy with the way I played today.' Curry played alongside father Dell and brother Seth. 'It was obviously fun playing with my dad and my brother, the matching outfits and everything, getting the vibes going,' Stephen Curry said. 'As average as I think I played, I held the big numbers out, which allows you to stay relevant. Excited for tomorrow.'

Charles Barkley gets an eagle and the last laugh with his best Tahoe golf tourney score

STATELINE, Nev. — Charles Barkley posted his best score in 30 years at Edgewood Tahoe on Friday, then came to the media room and delivered one-liners like he always does. One question started like this: So, Charles, we know you've grinded and grinded and grinded as a golfer over the years … 'And sucked and sucked and sucked,' he said. But Barkley didn't suck Friday. He collected nine points in the modified Stableford scoring system, leaving him tied for 24th (in a field of 90 players) entering Saturday's second round of the American Century Championship. If this had been counted as stroke play, Barkley shot 81. He made one eagle, one birdie and eight pars. For one improbable and glorious day, Barkley seemed to know what he was doing on the golf course. Charles Barkley Hole Out! @ACChampionship — Nick Conforti (@_NickConforti_) July 11, 2025 He quickly gave credit to his coach, Stan Utley, for 'changing the entire dynamic' of Barkley's golfing life in recent years. No more mid-swing hitch. No more ugly shots hooking left or slicing right. 'It's so crazy,' Barkley, 62, said. 'Listen, man. I played one-handed here. I played left-handed. It just wasn't working, but I still had a blast when I came here.' Barkley made his eagle on No. 2, a par-4 measuring 375 yards. He had 88 yards left on his second shot: The ball landed well past the flagstick, spun quickly and scooted back into the hole. The crowd erupted in jubilation, roaring so loudly that Stephen Curry backed off his eagle putt on No. 3. Curry waited about 30 seconds, trying to figure out what might have caused the commotion. He didn't find out until a few hours later, when a reporter told him about Barkley's eagle and showed him the video a spectator posted on social media. Friday's round had been brewing in some respects — Barkley finished 58th in last year's tournament, his best showing ever. Now he has a realistic chance to rise higher. 'It was humiliating and embarrassing to suck, because I never sucked at anything in my life,' Barkley said. 'It was not a lot of fun for me. But I was really happy with the way I played last year. 'I was excited to get here this year, and I'm excited to get to that blackjack table tonight.'
