Sherrone Moore and Chip Lindsey aim for balanced, dynamic Michigan offense in 2025 season
Michigan football fans got a small preview of what the new-look offense might be in the spring game, but not fully. The team was in a split-squad, but not in an A offense vs. B defense sort of way, as the teams were selected via draft. So what Chip Lindsey brings to the table as the Wolverines' new offensive coordinator remains to be seen. What will be interesting is how he meshes with head coach Sherrone Moore's vision. As the former offensive coordinator for the maize and blue himself, Moore's offense was smashmouth, and there's no indication that that will change overall. In fact, as Moore said at Big Ten media days, while 'SMASH!' is the primary directive of that side of the ball, there was a lot more capability we didn't see, situationally -- but this year it might be different. "I think where me and Chip are really similar is just he wanted to do the best for what's best for our offense, what's best for our players," Moore said. "And even when I was calling offenses it wasn't about like I wanted to just -- people say, 'Oh, we just wanted to run the football.' That's not really true. There's times we did, but I wanted to be balanced. Sometimes that balance got out of whack because either I got mad or we wanted to set a tone, and we did that, but it's really about balance. "And people say we didn't throw the ball. J.J. McCarthy was quarterback of the year in the Big Ten, as voted by the coaches. So you can't say that we can't throw the ball when the quarterback is the quarterback of the year. So I really feel strongly that it's all about balance and he wants that." As Moore notes, it's all about balance, but balance doesn't mean equal reps of run and pass or even equal outcomes. But it is about setting the expectation, having prolific production from multiple positions, and keeping a defense off-kilter. And that's something that Lindsey is familiar with. "He's been a guy that's had a 1,000-yard rusher, had a 3,000-yard passer," Moore said. "Fun stat about Chip, he was the offense coordinator at Southern Miss that had 2,000 yard rushers and a 3,000 and a 4,000-yard passer, and I was at Louisville at that time and had like a 1,000 yard rusher and 3,000 yard (passer). So he understands football, he understands the game. "Where we're different, I don't know. There's a lot of different things -- we think about different plays differently. Not necessarily total philosophy, but Chip's not like a, 'Hey, I just want to be an up-tempo, spread guy.' He's a balanced guy and does whatever's best for your program and team. We'll have those elements in the game. We'll be able to do things like that, but we've always had that. We just chose not to do it as much, where we might, where we might not. I think that all depends on the situation in the game." Fans will get their first opportunity to see the new-look Michigan football offense on August 30 when the Wolverines host New Mexico for the 2025 season opener.

Former Jackson State star signs with Dallas Cowboys
After an up-and-down journey in the NFL, former Jackson State star and Detroit Lions edge rusher James Houston has signed with the Dallas Cowboys, according to multiple reports. Houston, a 2022 sixth-round pick out of Jackson State, began his career on the Lions' practice squad. He made an immediate impact after being activated, debuting on Thanksgiving Day with a two-sack performance against the Buffalo Bills. He went on to tally eight sacks in just seven games, quickly becoming one of the league's most surprising breakout rookies. Despite that early success, Houston struggled to carve out a consistent role. In the 2023 offseason, Detroit experimented with him at SAM linebacker, but the fit didn't stick. His momentum took another hit when he fractured his ankle while covering a punt in Week 2 against Seattle, sidelining him for most of the season. He returned just in time for the NFC Championship game. In 2024, the Lions gave Houston another opportunity as a traditional defensive end. However, he began the season as a healthy scratch. An injury to star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson opened the door for Houston to get back on the field, but he was ultimately waived on November 26. Now, Houston gets a fresh start with Dallas, a team actively building depth behind Micah Parsons. His mix of speed and burst off the edge makes him a compelling low-risk, high-reward signing for the Cowboys. At Jackson State University, James Houston was a dominant force on defense. In his lone season (2021), he recorded 70 total tackles, 24.5 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, 7 forced fumbles, and 1 interception, helping lead JSU to an SWAC Championship and earning FCS All-American honors. At 25 years old, James Houston has a chance to revive his career and contribute to one of the NFC's top contenders, the Dallas Cowboys. Former BYU QB Jake Retzlaff reportedly to transfer to Tulane
Six weeks before Week 1 of the 2025 college football season, Jake Retzlaff has found a new home. The former BYU quarterback has committed to Tulane, according to a report from ESPN on July 21. The move comes 10 days after Retzlaff left BYU rather than sit through a planned seven-game suspension for a violation of the school's honor code, which prohibits premarital sex. REQUIRED READING: Big Ten's rigged College Football Playoff plan shut down by SEC Retzlaff had been accused in a lawsuit in May of raping a woman in 2023. Retzlaff denied the allegation and the lawsuit was dismissed on June 30, with the parties jointly agreeing to dismiss with prejudice. Given the severity of the allegations Retzlaff faced, Tulane spent more than a week doing background on the transfer quarterback and had the school's Title IX office review the move, according to ESPN. The report added that Retzlaff will join the Green Wave as a walk-on, as he was unable to enter the NCAA transfer portal given when he left BYU. Retzlaff threw for 2,947 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions last season and ran for 417 yards and six touchdowns. He helped lead the Cougars to an 11-2 record and a No. 14 ranking in the final US LBM Coaches Poll. At Tulane, he'll aim to win the starting job vacated by Darian Mensah, who transferred to Duke after leading the Green Wave to the American Athletic Conference championship game last season. Retzlaff is one of four transfer quarterbacks on the roster, joining Brendan Sullivan (Iowa), Kadin Semonza (Ball State) and Donovan Leary (Illinois). On3 Sports reported that Retzlaff has not been promised the starting job. Coach Jon Sumrall had originally brought in TJ Finley from Western Kentucky, but the well-traveled quarterback entered the transfer portal in April after he was arrested after police linked the license plate of a truck he was driving to a stolen car in Atlanta (Finley's attorneys claimed he was victim of a scam after buying a used truck through a social media marketplace). After going 9-5 in Sumrall's first season, Tulane is expected to be one of the best teams this season outside the power conference level, which could put it in contention for a designated spot in the College Football Playoff.
