‘Ente Bhoomi' putting Kerala among global leaders: World Bank official
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government's 'Ente Bhoomi' programme will help Kerala position itself among the global leaders in land management, World Bank's Lead Land Administration Specialist Mika-Petteri Torhonen has said. He was speaking at the Bhoomi National Conclave in Kovalam on Friday.
'I have been travelling globally and I could see that the Ente Bhoomi mission by Kerala is taking the state to one among the global countries, like Estonia, Australia, etc. I had a two-year interaction with the Kerala team from the very initial stages of the launch of the Ente Bhoomi programme,' Torhonen said.
He said he was 'really astonished' by the progress made by the project in two years.

Each district to emerge as a growth driver, CM Fadnavis at IIM
Nagpur: CM Devendra Fadnavis said that under the new district strategic plan, the state will focus on making every district a growth driver, which in turn will propel Maharashtra's economy. Inaugurating 'MahaStride' and a workshop for district collectors at IIM Nagpur on Saturday, Fadnavis said the project will help in optimising resources and making policies tailored to a specific region. Fadnavis said that Maharashtra's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) can increase by Rs35 lakh crore in the next five years, with MahaStride now in place. The MahaStride (Strengthening Institutional Capabilities in Districts for Enabling Growth) project focuses on improving how districts plan, execute, and monitor their development strategies, with the aim of generating economic opportunities, attracting investment, and improving public services. "At present, the district level GSDP is not 100% accurate, it's done by using various thumb rules. But thanks to MahaStride, we will get accurate data from district level," Fadnavis added. The total estimated cost of the MahaStride project is Rs2,232 crore, of which Rs1,562 crore will be funded through loans from the World Bank, while the remaining Rs670 crore will be provided by state govt. The project represents a strategic partnership between the state and global experts to support inclusive and sustainable growth in districts across Maharashtra. The CM said that Maharashtra Institution for Transformation (Mitra) chief, and former IAS officer Pravin Pardeshi had suggested putting a 'clock' in Mantralaya to measure where each district now stands. "This clock will show where the district must reach and where they stand at present. Unless there is accountability, there is no motivation to do things," said Fadnavis. Deputy CM Eknath Shinde said districts will reach their full potential with MahaStride. "Many districts lag in development standards, but now we will ensure that infrastructure is upgraded everywhere," said Shinde.

Kerala sees 100% FDI growth: Minister
Thiruvananthapuram: Industry minister P Rajeeve said the state's new industrial policy has significantly transformed Kerala's entrepreneurial landscape and boosted job opportunities, enabling more youth to find employment within the state. Inaugurating the International MSME (micro, small and medium enterprises) Day celebrations, organized by the department of industries & commerce and the World Bank-aided Kera project, Rajeeve noted that Kerala is witnessing a rise in reverse migration amid global geopolitical tensions. He affirmed the govt's commitment to building an industry-friendly ecosystem that supports both employment and economic growth. The event's focal theme, ARYSE-Kerala (Awareness and Response for Young and Student Entrepreneurs), reflects the state's efforts to empower the next generation of entrepreneurs. "We are focusing on knowledge-based industries by leveraging Kerala's highly skilled workforce," Rajeeve said. Initiatives such as K-Store and K-Shoppe have enhanced sales for homegrown MSMEs and nano units. Rajeeve said the Invest Kerala Global Summit (IKGS), held earlier in Kochi, attracted Rs 1.96 lakh crore in investments. Kerala also recorded 100% growth in foreign direct investment (FDI), making it the top achiever in ease of doing business, as per a recent Union govt report. He said coordinated efforts by the govt and industries department have significantly reduced the failure rate of new MSMEs. Based on studies by IIM Indore and the Centre for Management Development, the govt will soon launch Mission 10000, aiming to scale up 10,000 nano enterprises to generate a combined turnover of Rs 1 lakh crore. An MoU between the directorate of industries and commerce and the Kera project was signed at the event.

World Bank grants $50 million to improve Sri Lanka's education system
The World Bank has approved a new $50 million additional financing package for Sri Lanka through its ongoing General Education Modernisation Project, which would benefit an estimated 5,00,000 students and 1,50,000 teachers. In a press release on Friday, the World Bank said the additional funding will help keep vital education reforms on track, improve teaching quality, upgrade school facilities, and enhance student well-being. The World Bank said the additional funding will focus on underserved schools, including those in the plantation communities and those supporting children with special needs. Schools across all nine provinces, regardless of grade level, are expected to benefit from this support, the press release said. This support is about making sure every child in Sri Lanka has the chance to learn in a safe, inclusive environment and that every teacher has the tools they need to help their students thrive, said David Sislen, World Bank Divisional Director for the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. We are excited to be working with Sri Lanka to help students and teachers reach their full potential, he added. The additional financing will support the improvement of teacher effectiveness by modernising pre-service teacher education and continuing teacher development, with a strong focus on digital learning, the release said. Harsha Aturupane, World Bank Lead Economist and Task Team Leader, said the additional funds will be utilised to benefit children in rural and estate areas, with special emphasis on female students. The project is implemented by the Ministry of Education, along with the provincial education authorities.
