Saudi Students Participate in 2025 International Physics Olympiad in France
Set to run until July 25, the Olympiad brings together outstanding high school students from all over the world.
Four students are representing the Kingdom at this global scientific event after being qualified through the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba).
In collaboration with the Ministry of Education and thanks to Saudi Aramco's support, Mawhiba has provided students with thousands of hours of intensive training ahead of the Olympiad.
Launched in 1967 in Poland, International Physics Olympiad stands out as one of the most prestigious science competitions worldwide. It seeks basically to cultivate students' skills in innovation, scientific analysis, as well as complex problem-solving.
Saudi Arabia has been participating at IPhO since 2011, securing (6) silver medals, (20) bronze medals, and (22) certificates of appreciation.
Saudi Arabia has recently made bold strides towards establishing a more knowledge-based economy focused on elevating the scientific scene in the Kingdom.
Through its participation in several international Olympiads, the Kingdom has been shown excellent performance and unparalleled skills with students securing several medals and recognitions across various fields.

Saudi Arabia ramps up coffee production with new initiative
JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia has launched an initiative to increase high-quality coffee seedling production using tissue culture technology as part of the Kingdom's push to develop its coffee sector and promote sustainable agriculture. Led by the Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program, or Saudi Reef, in cooperation with the National Centre for Research and Development of Sustainable Agriculture, also known as Estidamah, the project will plant 50,000 seedlings and boost the productivity of coffee trees by 30 percent by the end of 2025. Majid Al-Brikan, spokesperson for Saudi Reef, said the initiative began with selecting six elite genetic samples from coffee trees in Jazan, Asir and Baha. These were supplied to labs, producing 17,000 somatic embryos and 4,000 plants, now undergoing the rooting phase. So far, 1,200 plants have been transferred to greenhouse facilities for acclimatisation, and another 400 seedlings are in the hardening stage. A bioreactor growth accelerator has also been installed to speed up production and reduce reliance on manual labor. According to Al-Brikan, the project has yielded significant scientific breakthroughs, including the re-evaluation of 82 genetic patterns, now grouped into 12 genetic groups based on morphological similarities. Seedlings are also being produced through cuttings of selected genotypes, with 1,000 rooted cuttings prepared to yield traceable, high-quality plants. A key focus of the initiative is the development of disease-resistant and drought-tolerant coffee varieties, supporting the Kingdom's goals for climate-resilient agriculture. Fourteen knowledge-based agricultural products have also been developed to promote best practices across coffee farms. The program includes development of a reference book for local farmers on cultivation and post-harvest practices. To support knowledge transfer, at least 109 farmers have participated in domestic and international study tours, and more than 200 stakeholders have received training through workshops and seminars. The program has also engaged with global coffee events to promote Saudi Arabia's growing presence in the international market.

Saudi Arabia launches AI readiness index to accelerate government tech transformation
RIYADH: Saudi government agencies are set to advance artificial intelligence adoption through a new index that measures readiness and supports the development of innovative, data-driven solutions across key sectors. The National Artificial Intelligence Index, inaugurated by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority, is designed to assess the maturity of AI implementation across government entities. More than 180 representatives participated in the first measurement cycle, which also aims to provide tailored recommendations and track progress regularly, according to the Saudi Press Agency. The initiative supports broader government targets, including ranking among the top 15 countries globally in AI, top 10 in the Open Data Index, and top 20 in data and AI-related publications under the National Strategy for Data and Artificial Intelligence. AI is projected to contribute $235.2 billion, or 12.4 percent, to Saudi Arabia's gross domestic product by 2030, according to estimates by PwC. 'The index aims to unify government efforts and national priorities in the field of AI and provide the enabling capabilities to enable government agencies to adopt and develop effective and sustainable AI products and solutions that contribute to achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030,' SPA said. It added: 'The index is based on three main pillars, seven main axes, and 23 sub-fields to ensure a comprehensive measurement of government agencies' AI readiness.' This forms part of SDAIA's broader mandate as the Kingdom's national authority for data and AI development and regulation. It is intended to strengthen institutional performance and drive public-sector innovation. The newly launched index also provides results reflecting the maturity of AI adoption within government agencies, along with the necessary support to enhance their capabilities and further develop innovative solutions that sustain national efforts and expand their impact in priority sectors. As part of its continuous efforts to improve institutional excellence, SDAIA was recently awarded two international accreditation certificates by the Global Excellence Assembly, a body that specializes in developing and evaluating institutional excellence models. The recognition highlights SDAIA's alignment with international best practices in the design and governance of award models, as well as the transparency and impartiality of its evaluation and selection processes. SDAIA is also engaging the public to shape the future of digital services. The authority earlier this month launched an electronic consultation to gather public opinion on the Ehsan National Platform for Charitable Work, inviting citizens and residents to share their views on which service is most in need of improvement.

SDAIA Launches 'National AI Index' to Measure Saudi Govt Readiness for Adopting AI
The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) launched the "National AI Index," with over 180 representatives from participating government entities attending the first assessment cycle. The goal of the index is to evaluate institutional readiness for adopting artificial-intelligence (AI) technologies, regularly monitor progress, and provide recommendations to support development efforts and achieve the desired national impact, reported the Saudi Press Agency on Wednesday. The index aims to align government efforts and national priorities in the field of AI, while providing the necessary enablers to support government entities in adopting and developing effective and sustainable AI solutions that contribute to achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. The index is built on three main pillars, seven core dimensions, and 23 subcategories to ensure a comprehensive assessment of government entities' readiness in the AI field. It provides results that reflect the maturity level of AI adoption across entities, along with the necessary support to enhance their capabilities in developing innovative solutions that sustain national efforts and maximize their impact in priority sectors. The index is part of SDAIA's broader efforts as the national reference for data and AI in the Kingdom, overseeing their regulation, development, and application. It aims to promote the adoption of AI technologies and improve institutional performance, thereby advancing digital transformation across government entities. The initiative aligns with SDAIA's strategic partnerships to support the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 to build a knowledge- and innovation-based economy.
