
Alarmingly high sodium levels found in naengmyeon meal kits
Nine out of 10 prepackaged products sold in the domestic market that were examined by the Korea Consumer Agency were found to have sodium levels exceeding half of the World Health Organization's recommended daily intake of less than 2,000 milligrams.
Several of them had close to the 2,000 milligram threshold in a single package, including No Brand's mul naengmyeon (cold noodles in chilled broth) at 1,833 milligrams. One -- mul naengmyeon product from Chil Kab Farm Products -- had 2,969 milligrams.
Pulmuone's bibim naengmyeon (cold noodles with spicy sauce) product was the only one that had less than 50 percent of the daily sodium intake, at 803 milligrams.
On average, the sodium levels of five mul naengmyeon products were higher than those of bibim naengmyeon products, 1,999 to 1,270.
The study found that most of the sodium came from the broth of mul naengmyeon and the spicy sauce in bibim naengmyeon. A total of 1,666 milligrams of sodium was found in the watery broth, challenging the conventional belief that it is the milder option.
Sauce for bibim naengmyeon, which includes red pepper paste, sugar, vinegar and other ingredients, had 837 milligrams of sodium on average.
But the noodles themselves, in both types of dishes, had fairly-low levels of sodium at 333 milligrams for mul naengmyeon and 433 milligrams for bibim naengmyeon.
Although an average serving of naengmyeon provides 23-29 percent of the recommended daily calorie intake, a KCA survey of 1,000 people showed that many Koreans eat more than one serving per meal.
In the survey, 50 percent said they eat a single serving per meal while 47 percent said they eat two, and 3 percent said they eat three or more. This would lead to excessive intake of calories and sodium in a single meal, and unbalanced nutrition since naengmyeon dishes consist mostly of carbohydrates.
Researchers recommended that instead of filling up on an excessive amount of noodles, consumers should try to balance their meals by adding eggs, meat or cucumber slices, which are common toppings for naengmyeon.

Death benefit claims for delivery workers in H1 near 2024's full-year total
10 applications filed by bereaved families of delivery workers in first six months of this year Bereaved families of express delivery service workers in South Korea filed 10 applications for government death benefits in the first half of 2025, just two cases short of the 12 submitted for the entire year of 2024, according to government data released Wednesday. Of the 10 applications, seven have been approved so far, according to data from the Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service obtained and released by the office of Rep. Kim Ui-sang of the People Power Party. Last year, nine of the 12 applications were approved. Under Article 62 of the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Act, families of workers whose deaths are attributed to occupational causes may apply for survivors' benefits. Until now, no more than 14 applications for industrial accident-related death benefits have been filed per year between 2020 and 2024. This makes the first half of 2025 one of the deadliest periods in recent years for Korea's package delivery industry, commonly known as taekbae. Of this year's 10 applications, three were related to deaths caused by work-related accidents, matching the total number filed in 2024. All three cases this year were approved, while two of the three applications were approved last year. Six applications were filed for deaths resulting from "occupational diseases," of which three have been approved so far. Occupational disease refers to illnesses directly related to the nature of the job, which for delivery workers commonly involve musculoskeletal issues related to the muscles and skeleton. The remaining application was related to a death that occurred while commuting. Express package delivery service, known as "taekbae" in Korea, has become an essential part of daily life, driven by the widespread use of e-commerce. An October report by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry found that, on average, Koreans used express delivery services about 100 times per person in 2023. But there have also been concerns about the health risks faced by delivery workers, many of whom are overworked. KWCWS data released in September showed that 69.7 percent of package delivery workers' deaths from 2020 to 2022 were due to overwork. "We have to review the current system of industrial safety to see if it provides sufficient protection for those working in the field of e-commerce, from factors like extreme heat due to unusual weather and excessive workload," Rep. Kim said. In terms of total industrial accidents in the express package delivery field in the first half of 2025, 757 applications for compensation were filed, and 680 were approved. This is not particularly high compared to 1,556 filed for 2024, with 1,424 approved. But the number of applications for industrial accidents has skyrocketed from 326 in 2020. By far the most common industrial accident for package delivery workers in the first half of the year was accidents; 595 of 627 applications were approved. A total of 86 applications for industrial accidents were filed, with musculoskeletal health issues accounting for 70.

75% of South Korean adults don't exercise enough, data shows
Activity participation higher among younger men, rural regions Only about one in four South Korean adults engage in enough physical activity to meet recommended health standards, making the country one of the most physically inactive populations in the world, according to government data released Thursday. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency reported that only 26.6 percent of adults in the country engaged in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) at recommended levels in 2024. That means nearly three out of four Koreans do not get enough exercise. The moderate physical activity standard includes activities that are somewhat more physically demanding than usual and cause slightly heavier breathing -- such as leisurely swimming, doubles tennis, badminton or carrying light objects -- at least five times a week for 30 minutes. Vigorous activity, meanwhile, covers activities that are much more physically demanding and cause heavy breathing -- such as running, hiking, fast-paced cycling, squash and carrying heavy objects -- at least three times a week for 20 minutes. While the MVPA participation rate slowly rebounded post-pandemic, having dipped to an all-time low of 19.7 percent in 2021, the current 26.6 percent is still far below desirable levels, the agency said. 'It is encouraging that the rate of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity has been increasing since the return to daily life,' said KDCA Commissioner Jee Young-mee. 'However, as of 2022, the global physical inactivity rate was 31.3 percent, while South Korea's was 58.1 percent. That's about 1.9 times higher.' South Korea placed 191st among 195 countries surveyed by the World Health Organization -- a stark contrast to the global inactivity rate -- with Sweden at 8.7 percent, Denmark at 12.14 percent, and China at 23.83 percent. Inactivity is defined as performing less than 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week. The analysis also found that South Korean men (30.2 percent) are more active than women (19.5 percent), and young adults in their 20s (32.3 percent) had the highest activity levels among all age groups. In particular, 42.2 percent of men in their 20s met MVPA standards -- the highest across all demographics -- while only 18.3 percent of men aged 70 and above did. Meanwhile, women did not show a consistent decrease with age. In fact, those in their 40s (22.9 percent) and 50s (21.8 percent) were more active than younger or older women, suggesting different patterns in physical activity between genders. Where you live matters Regional disparities were also evident. Sejong showed the highest increase in MVPA from 2021 to 2024, jumping 11.6 percentage points to 29.1 percent. Ulsan and North Chungcheong Province followed with similar gains. Meanwhile, Gwangju saw the smallest change over the same period, with just a 0.9 percentage point increase. Residents in areas outside the major cities were more physically active, likely due to the labor-intensive nature of agricultural and fishery jobs. In contrast, lower activity levels in metropolitan areas were attributed to sedentary urban lifestyles dominated by desk jobs and reliance on public or private transport. In 2024, Seoul recorded an MVPA rate of 26.8 percent, while North Gyeongsang Province saw a rate of 31.8 percent and Jeju Island recorded 33 percent. The KDCA also found significant correlations between physical inactivity and chronic or mental health issues. Adults without hypertension or diabetes were 1.1 times more likely to engage in MVPA than those with such diagnoses. Similarly, those without depressive symptoms were 1.2 times more likely to be physically active than those who experienced depression. 'This reinforces the critical link between physical activity and both physical and mental health,' the agency noted, urging more proactive public health measures. Jee Young-mee, the KDCA commissioner, called the situation alarming, noting that while Korea's activity levels are improving post-pandemic, they remain severely low by global standards. 'Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity is not just about disease prevention. It's essential for healthy aging and overall quality of life,' she said. 'Neglecting it can increase the risk of chronic illness and mental health decline.' Jee urged people to incorporate movement into their daily routines, even starting with small steps, and called for continued government investment in creating supportive environments for active living.

Unsweetened coffee, especially the Americano, has become the most consumed beverage among Korean adults aged 20 and over, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. The survey classifies beverages as sweetened or unsweetened based on the presence of added sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. Koreans older than one year consumed an average of 274.6 grams of beverages daily as of 2023, a rise of more than 20 percent from 223.5 grams in 2019. Men averaged 300 grams per day, while women consumed 247.2 grams. People in their 30s drank the most, averaging 415.3 grams daily - more than four glasses. Unsweetened coffee, such as Americano, topped the list at 112.1 grams daily - an increase of 28.2 grams over five years. Carbonated drinks ranked second, with 48.9 grams consumed daily.
