Athletic Brewing's Non-Alcoholic Beer Boom: Big Growth Ahead

In an era when the traditional beer market continues to contract under the weight of shifting consumer preferences, declining alcohol consumption, and fierce competition from ready-to-drink cocktails and cannabis beverages, one company is defying the trend and redefining success: Athletic Brewing Company.
Now ranked as the eighth-largest craft brewery and 18th largest overall brewery in the United States— up two spots from the previous year — Athletics' rise is a case study in what happens when smart strategy, cultural timing, and visionary execution converge. At a time when most brewers are fighting for survival, this non-alcoholic (NA) beer pioneer is celebrating the production of its one-millionth barrel, completing its fourth production facility, and capturing more shelf space and consumer attention than ever before.
Founded just seven years ago by Bill Shufelt and John Walker, Athletic Brewing emerged from a simple but audacious premise: modern adults deserve high-quality, full-flavored non-alcoholic beer that fits their increasingly mindful lifestyles. Today, that idea has become a national movement, one that grew 27% in 2024 and is forecast to reach $5 billion in the US by 2028, according to IWSR data.

"Our emergence as a leader in the NA category isn't the result of any one factor," says Shufelt. "It's the compounding effect of sustained investments in manufacturing, marketing, innovation, and our team."
Those investments include more than $100 million invested in state-of-the-art brewing facilities on both coasts, including the repurposed former Ballast Point brewery in San Diego, which will come online this August. With this expanded capacity of over 1.2 million barrels, Athletic is ready to meet demand far beyond the nearly 400,000 barrels it produced in 2024.
With only about 20% brand awareness and peak distribution for its top-performing SKU sitting at just 38%, Athletic sees wide-open terrain ahead. Its team is executing a savvy multi-pronged marketing approach that blends broad-scale campaigns with hyper-local precision. This includes strategic media spending, cultural partnerships, and on-the-ground activations at festivals such as BottleRock and La Onda.
'We shine in person,' says Andrew Katz, CMO for Athletic Brewing Company. 'Getting cans into hands at those peak life moments, whether that's a marathon finish line or a live music set, is where curiosity turns into brand loyalty.'

Their dual strategy is built around two pillars: "moments of participation" and "moments of enjoyment." The former includes high-performance events like IRONMAN, Spartan Races, and the Leadville 100. The latter spans over 100 Live Nation venues, MLB's Seattle Mariners, the NBA champion runner-up Indiana Pacers, and international soccer matches at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium. They even have inked NIL deals with star college athletes. The approach ensures Athletic is both present and relevant wherever people gather to push their limits or celebrate life. A Category-Expanding Force
Unlike many trends in the alcohol space that cannibalize existing categories (hard seltzers drawing from light beer drinkers, for example), Athletic is additive. By appealing to drinkers and non-drinkers alike, it's expanding the beer aisle itself. A consumer who once had alcohol only on weekends can now enjoy a guilt-free, award-winning brew daily.
Athletic's role as a "chaser, pacer, and replacer" positions it as a flexible option, not just for abstainers, but for moderating consumers seeking balance without compromise. "This is a positive-sum revolution," says Shufelt. "We're not replacing drinking occasions — we're creating new ones." The Long Game: Innovation and Impact
Shufelt and Walker's willingness to take the long road is paying off. Their in-house R&D program produces over 50 new brews annually, a pace that keeps the brand fresh and fuels a continuous feedback loop from fans. With innovations like IPA-inspired hop bombs, rich stouts, and citrusy radlers, the company has made it clear that flavor doesn't need fermentation.
But the brand's vision extends beyond beer. Through its 'Two For The Trails" grant program — the largest environmental initiative in craft brewing — Athletic is donating up to $2 million annually to preserve outdoor spaces, with a total of $6.3 million given since 2018. It's not just a feel-good story; it's a values-first foundation that resonates with a new generation of consumers. Positioned to Lead a Growing Segment
While the beer industry contracts, the NA segment is expanding, and Athletic is setting the pace. Shufelt believes NA beer will surpass 10% of total beer sales within the next decade. According to Shufelt, some grocery chains are already exceeding that threshold, highlighting the unlimited short-term ceiling for NA beer.
Globally, the potential is just beginning to unfold. Athletic is already selling in Canada, the UK, and select European markets, with more international expansion on the horizon. To help fuel its growth, the company announced its latest funding round, a Series D investment of $68 million, in July 2024, bringing its total funding to $251 million across 11 rounds since its founding.

Those funds are helping Athletic Brewing continually expand its retail footprint, meet growing demand with new production facilities, and position the brand in front of consumers. It doesn't seem likely that the brand will surrender its position at the top of the charts by resting on its laurels. The Verdict
In many ways, Athletic Brewing is following a similar trajectory as early movers in the hard seltzer wave — but with greater cultural staying power. By staying laser-focused on product quality, authentic partnerships, and long-term brand building, it has established a dominant position in a segment that's still in its infancy.
Unlike hard seltzers, which peaked quickly, the non-alcoholic movement is rooted in fundamental shifts: wellness, moderation, and mindfulness. And for Athletic, that's not just a business opportunity — it's a belief system.
'We've intentionally invited both drinkers and non-drinkers alike into the world of modern adult beverages. In many cases, this means recruiting drinkers back to the beer aisle and expanding into new populations. At the same time, we're giving everyone the option to enjoy a great-tasting adult alcohol alternative more often,' says Shufelt. 'By positioning Athletic as a chaser, pacer, and replacer, we're able to appeal not only to those who abstain from alcohol altogether but also to those who are looking to moderate their consumption. We're still in the early innings of what's possible for Athletic and the broader NA category, and we couldn't be more excited." \

Supreme Court will take up a new case about which school sports teams transgender students can join

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court agreed Thursday to hear a case over state restrictions on which school sports teams transgender students can join. Just two weeks after upholding a ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth, the justices said they will review lower court rulings in favor of transgender athletes in Idaho and West Virginia. The nationwide battle over the participation of transgender girls on girls sports teams has played out at both the state and federal levels as Republicans have leveraged the issue as a fight for athletic fairness for women and girls. More than two dozen states have enacted laws barring transgender women and girls from participating in certain sports competitions. Some policies have been blocked in court. At the federal level, the Trump administration has filed lawsuits and launched investigations over state and school policies that have allowed transgender athletes to compete freely. This week, the University of Pennsylvania modified a trio of school records set by transgender swimmer Lia Thomas and said it would apologize to female athletes 'disadvantaged' by her participation on the women's swimming team, part of a resolution of a federal civil rights case. The case will be argued in the fall.

Johnnie Walker For Beginners: From Red To Blue, Johnnie Walker Colours Explained

From Red to Blue, here's what each Johnnie Walker colour really means, and which one is right for you. Mark Littler LTD Johnnie Walker whiskies are the biggest internationally selling whisky in the world. John Walker was just 15 years old when he opened a greengrocers in 1820. I'm not sure he could have imagined the scotch whisky industry today, and a future where every second, eight bottles with his name on it are sold. Today there are six whiskies in the Johnnie Walker core range, each perfected to appeal to a different whisky drinker. While it is easy to assume everyone knows the difference between the Johnnie Walker colours, if you're new to drinking scotch it can be hard to appreciate or understand the differences between each label. From the accessibly priced Red and Black labels to the premium Blue Label, this is a run down of the Johnnie Walker colours for beginners, including expert opinions and which one is the best. Johnnie Walker Red Label is the cheapest in the range. You can buy a bottle for around $26 to $33 (£20-£25) making it a perfect price point for mixing and cocktails. I don't think anyone would recommend it as a sipping whisky. For that you should take the small price jump to Johnnie Walker Black. Johnnie Walker Red label is perfect for emergencies where no other whisky is available. However, spend a few dollars more an buy the Black Label if you want a better drinking experience. Mark Littler LTD For me Johnnie Walker Black label is the best starting point for beginners to the range, as it perfectly balances complexity and price. 'Black Label 12 year old is an incredible way to introduce yourself into the world of peated whisky,' agrees Phil Dwyer, freelance whisky writer and YouTube reviewer at Whiskey Wednesday, over an email with me. 'It's ideal if you're looking for something that has multiple points of flavour.' Johnnie Walker Black Label is by far the sweet spot of the entire range; well priced and remarkably easy to drink. Mark Littler LTD Black label retails for around $30 to $40 and is one of those whiskies that is almost universally enjoyed. It combines around 40 different whiskies, all of which are at least 12 years old, to create a really consistent dram. It has a very subtle hint of smoke, built around Cardhu and the sweetness of grain, and is a really nice introduction to blended scotch. Double Black, Green & Gold: The Price Vs Quality Sweet Spot Next we move into Johnnie Walker's more premium tier. And we start with the Double Black. It is important to realise that Double Black is a very different whisky to the regular Black Label. This expression was introduced in 2011 and although it has the same 'core' as its cousin, Double Black drops the age statement and increases the dominance of whiskies from Diageo's peated whisky portfolio. It's crafted to specifically target lovers of peated/smokey notes in their whisky and at around $40 to $50 (£35 to £40) a bottle we have firmly stepped into the premium stage here. Double Black is going to be best for whisky drinkers looking to explore more dominant smokey notes. Johnnie Walker Gold Label delivers on both looks and quality. Mark Littler LTD Johnnie Walker Gold Label is the next step up in the range at around $60 to $70 a bottle. Gold Label has come in and out of the core range over the years and the current iteration has honey notes of Clynelish as its hero flavours. If you don't like dominant smoke and find single malt a bit intense then Gold Label is the sweet spot in this premium tier. Green Label is a blended whisky made of 'pure malt'—it has no grain whisky component—and a 15-year age statement. It is a hugely popular part of the range. I asked Phil Dwyer of Whisky Wednesday why he thought that was. 'I think some of it is based on the quality of the liquid, it is a wonderful product that showcases some incredible single malts. I do also think some of it is still about 'I'm still not drinking a blend' in the technical sense of the word. We like to think that attitudes have moved on but some old school attitudes still remain across the industry in many ways.' Green Label is 100% malt whisky aged 15 years making it a perfect gateway to single malts with blended reliability. Mark Littler LTD At around $65 Johnnie Walker Green Label is a real gateway to single malts; it has all the price and consistency of a blended whisky and the complexity of single malt. It combines some of Diageo's fan favourites, including Talisker, Linkwood, Cragganmore, and Caol Isla, to create a sipping experience that performs well above its price point. If you're after a gift under $70 for someone who usually likes single malt scotch then I'd say Green Label is the one. Johnnie Walker Blue Label: For Making Impressions Johnnie Walker produces a lot of limited edition expressions outside of their core range, but you will probably have to go to a specialist scotch stockist for those. Blue Label on the other hand carries all the prestige of a luxury scotch, but handily you can pick it up in most places that stock whisky. Johnnie Walker Blue Label is apparantly made using only 1 in 10,000 casks Mark Littler LTD You'll be paying around $200 to $250 for a bottle of Blue Label, so it is a big step up from the previous tier, but everything about this whisky is designed to carry that price tag. The blend is composed of only the very best casks from Diageo's warehouses; allegedly only one in every 10,000 casks is deemed good enough to make the Blue Label cut. The best whiskies from Benrinnes, Cardhu, Clynelish, and Caol Ila are then combined with the finest grain whiskies. The whisky is then housed in a glass bottle that weighs almost 1kg more than the red label bottle. Finally the bottle is tucked into a gold velvet lined box so that every step of the drinking process makes an impression. Ultimately, whether it's worth the jump in price is going to come down to your individual taste. 'Try it. That's the only real way for you to make your mind up,' confirms Dwyer. 'I think it's a product that every whisky drinker should try and make their own mind up about. It still sells incredibly well across the world, so buy a measure at a bar or online and give it a study.' If you like finely crafted blended whisky and want to make a statement, then Johnnie Walker Blue Label is the bottle to reach for. Which Johnnie Walker Is The Best? Which of the Johnnie Walker colours is the best depends where you are, who you are with and how you plan to drink the whisky. If you are on the beach sipping cocktails then anything above Johnnie Walker Double Black is probably a waste. If you love scotch and want to make a statement then Green, Gold and Blue all say slightly different things depending on your company and intentions. Personally, Johnnie Walker Black Label is the best in the range for me all things considered.
