Karnataka to approach PM Modi for approval for defence corridors: Minister MB Patil
BENGALURU: Industries Minister MB Patil on Friday said they will soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek approval for defence corridors in the state. Patil said they had met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in the national capital, and he had responded positively to the state's request for defence corridors in North and South Karnataka. The Union Cabinet has to approve defence corridors for the state, he added. Due to changes in the geopolitical situation -- Russia-Ukraine war, Israel-Iran war and other developments -- there is expected to be high demand for defence, aerospace, deep-tech, artificial intelligence and other related sectors for at least the next 20 years, Patil said. Farmers are opposing the acquisition of land for a defence and aerospace park in Devanahalli taluk near Bengaluru, and the Chief Minister will be holding a meeting with the farmers on July 15. Adequate compensation should be given to farmers if land is acquired for the project, he said. Patil said they are due to meet Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu next week to discuss the second international airport in Bengaluru, and a decision will be taken after taking a look at Navi Mumbai and other new airports. On the leadership issue in the party, Patil said that the Chief Minister and state Congress president's posts are not vacant, and there is no need to create unnecessary confusion as the high command's decision is final.

Will meet PM soon to discuss defence corridor proposal: M B Patil
Bengaluru: Minister for Large and Medium Industries M.B. Patil revealed that the Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has responded positively to Karnataka's proposal to establish defence corridors in both northern and southern regions of the state. The proposal includes the Hubballi-Dharwad–Belagavi–Vijayapura belt in North Karnataka and the Bengaluru Rural–Kolar–Chikkaballapur region in South Karnataka. Speaking to media representatives at his residence, Minister Patil stated, 'We are planning to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon to present our proposal. Once approved, it will move forward for Cabinet-level consideration.' Patil emphasized the global demand for deep-tech industries such as defence, aerospace, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence due to evolving global geopolitics—citing the Israel-Iran conflict, the Russia-Ukraine war, and technological shifts. 'Over the next two decades, these sectors will see exponential growth. For instance, Nvidia has become the first company to achieve a $4 trillion market cap in this space. Karnataka must prepare itself to harness this opportunity,' he said. He also addressed the ongoing resistance from farmers regarding land acquisition for the proposed Hi-Tech Defence and Aerospace Park near Devanahalli. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to hold a high-level meeting on July 15 to discuss the issue. 'The government must ensure fair compensation to the farmers if acquisition proceeds. We consider them our own,' Patil added. Regarding the establishment of a second international airport in Bengaluru, Patil said he plans to meet Union Civil Aviation Ministry officials in Delhi next week. 'We're studying models like Noida and Navi Mumbai airports and will make a well-informed decision for Bengaluru's aviation future,' he said. Clarifying political speculations, Patil asserted that there are no vacancies in either the Chief Minister's office or the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) presidency. 'There is no confusion within the party. In the Congress, the high command is supreme, and their word is final,' he emphasized.

Prada team to visit Maharashtra next week, may roll out Kolhapuri Collection
Mumbai: Prada will send a team of technical experts to Maharashtra next week to engage directly with local artisans and manufacturers, marking a potential first step towards a formal collaboration on Kolhapuri chappals and other heritage crafts. The Italian luxury fashion house may also launch a limited-edition "Made in India" Kolhapuri chappal-inspired collection of sandals in partnership with local artisans, a senior official at the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce , Industry and Agriculture (Maccia) said. This was the outcome of a high-level virtual meeting between Prada and Maccia on Friday. Prada began the conversation "by accepting their mistake and with seriousness", the official said, referring to the fashion house unveiling sandals closely resembling Kolhapuri chappals-without initially acknowledging their origins-at the Milan Fashion Week last month. "They (Prada) are also keen to explore the possibilities for other products in jewellery and garment," Maccia president Lalit Gandhi told ET on a phone call. ET had first reported on June 29 that Prada may send a team. Gandhi said Prada's technical team will visit Mumbai and Kolhapur next week to discuss and share "standards and norms they are following for their products" with chamber office bearers, artisans and manufacturers. Maccia will facilitate this initiative by connecting the company with reputed artisan clusters and compliant manufacturers. Prada said the conversation marked an important moment in building mutual understanding and generated a meaningful exchange to discuss potential opportunities for future collaboration. "The next step will be for Prada's supply chain team to meet a range of artisanal footwear manufacturers, and the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce has kindly agreed to support in identifying GI-approved manufacturers that Prada Group could potentially collaborate with," a company spokesperson said in an email response to ET. According to Maccia, Prada's visit will focus on "identifying transparent, ESG-compliant and sustainable local supply chain partners for Kolhapuri chappal and other local artisan products manufacturers." Gandhi said Prada has agreed to acknowledge its collection as Kolhapuri sandals and complete GI compliances. Maccia further proposed collaboration on heritage crafts such as Paithani weaving, Himroo textiles, anklets and regional embroidery work. Prada responded positively and agreed to explore these crafts for potential integration into future collections, the industry body said in a press release. Both parties also discussed launching structured knowledge exchange and training programmes between Indian and Italian artisans. Prada expressed interest in supporting artisan skill development , design innovation and sustainability-led production models through cross-border collaboration and residencies. The meeting was attended by five senior officials from Prada's Milan headquarters, including group CSR head Lorenzo Bertelli and global communications director Christopher Bugg. Representing Maharashtra in the meeting were senior members and stakeholders across the chamber and artisans.
