‘Absolutely huge': Bombers food drive expanded to help tackle surging food bank need
A CFL-wide food drive is back for another season with hopes to score even more donations for those in need.
The Purolator-lead Tackle Hunger campaign calls on fans at CFL games across the country to bring a non-perishable tin for the bin or a cash donation to help support a local food bank.
'If you can spare a couple of items or even a bagful of food that you can bring to the game, I know there are people who would much appreciate it,' said Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Brady Oliveira.
Harvest Manitoba
Volunteers box up donations at the Harvest Manitoba warehouse on Winnipeg Avenue in November 2024.
The Bombers hosted the initiative at a home game last July, with Harvest Manitoba bins set up throughout Princess Auto Stadium. Peak of the Market also matched donations up to 10,000 pounds.
Harvest Manitoba executive director Vince Baretta said fans brought in over 70,000 pounds last season plus cash donations.
They hope to beat that this season, with donations being accepted at every Winnipeg Blue Bombers home game, as well as online.
'This year, I know we're going to be doing even better than that as we look forward to winning a Grey Cup at home,' he said.
Peak of the Market has also pledged to match donations once again.
Those who participate can enter a raffle, with golf, tailgating, and Bombers fan-centric grand prizes up for grabs.
Barletta said over 100,000 people access its food banks every month, so the donations are much needed.
'It's absolutely huge,' he said.

CFL's Blue Bombers monitor smoky air ahead of Friday's CFL game
The CFL and Winnipeg Blue Bombers say they're monitoring air quality ahead of Friday's scheduled game against the Toronto Argonauts. Forest fire smoke from northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba has drifted into the Manitoba capital. Winnipeg's air quality health index was at 10-plus — or very high risk — as of 10 a.m. CT. The game at Princess Auto Stadium was still set for 7:30 p.m., with air quality expected to improve throughout the day, the league and team said in a news release. The CFL's air quality policy states that if the air quality health index reaches eight or higher, which Environment Canada deems high risk, during warm-ups or the game, players will be sent to their dressing rooms. All CFL stadiums are equipped with real-time air-quality monitoring systems, and an update was expected in the afternoon.

All CFL stadiums are equipped with real-time, air-quality monitoring systems and an update was expected in the afternoon. Poor air quality in Regina forced the Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders to postpone their July 13 game to the following afternoon.
