Haramain Railway increases seats by 400,000 to transport pilgrims during Hajj season

Zawya07-05-2025
RIYADH — Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) will provide nearly two million seats for pilgrims traveling via the Haramain High-Speed Railway as part of its operational plan for the Hajj season of 2025. This marks an increase of 25 percent or 400,000 seats, compared to the previous season.
This increase confirms SAR's full preparedness to serve pilgrims in accordance with the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and quality. During this year's Hajj season, 4,768 trips will be operated between Dhul Qada 1 (April 29) and Dhul Hijjah 20. The Haramain High-Speed Railway runs along a 453-kilometer track connecting five main stations: Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah's Sulaymaniyyah station, King Abdulaziz International Airport station and King Abdullah Economic City station, facilitating smooth and comfortable transport between the two holy cities.
The Haramain High-Speed Railway plays a key role in transporting pilgrims as part of the Kingdom's modern mobility system. It is the fastest mode of transport between Makkah and Madinah, covering the distance in about two hours.
As one of the ten fastest passenger trains in the world, the Haramain Railway operates at speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour. Its fleet of 35 trains, each with a capacity of 417 seats, produces zero carbon emissions, making it an environmentally friendly solution that also helps reduce pressure on the road network and enhances the quality of transport for pilgrims.
SAR leverages its experience and capabilities to provide safe and efficient transportation services that facilitate pilgrims' movement between the two holy cities. Its operational plan is part of a broader national effort to serve pilgrims and reflects its commitment to collaboration with various government entities. As a national enabler of smooth and rapid pilgrim transport, SAR contributes to achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which aim to elevate the quality of services provided to pilgrims and ensure a sustainable and spiritually fulfilling journey.

25 hospitality facilities shut down in Makkah over licensing and safety violations

MAKKAH — The Ministry of Tourism has closed 25 hospitality establishments in Makkah during July as part of intensified inspection campaigns to ensure regulatory compliance in the holy city, the ministry announced Thursday. The closures followed the discovery of several violations, including operating without a valid license, poor maintenance and cleanliness standards, and breaches related to guest safety. The inspections are part of the ministry's ongoing efforts to verify that hospitality facilities meet all approved requirements and hold the necessary permits to operate. The initiative aligns with the ministry's broader objective to enhance service quality for visitors and pilgrims during the busy Umrah and Hajj seasons. The ministry emphasized the importance of all facilities adhering to Saudi Arabia's tourism regulations and executive bylaws. It warned that penalties for non-compliance could include fines of up to SR1 million, closure orders, or both. It also reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing these rules to improve service standards, safeguard guests, and uphold the reputation of Makkah as a premier religious tourism destination. © Copyright 2022 The Saudi Gazette. Big Ticket e-draw: Water salesman among four expats to win Dh50,000 each

Four lucky expats — three Indians and a Bangladeshi — took home Dh50,000 each in the Big Ticket e-draw this week. A water salesman, a safety officer and a purchase officer were among the lucky winners this week. Bangladesh's Mohammad Khorsed Alam, a water salesman, who has been living in Sharjah for the past four years while his family remains back home, purchased a Big Ticket entry for the first time as part of a group of 20 people. 'I'm really happy to hear about my win, and I plan to split the prize money among my group,' the 22-year-old said. When asked if he would continue purchasing from Big Ticket, he simply replied, 'Yes.' His advice to others is to take a chance, as anything is possible with a bit of luck. Ajai Krishnakumar Jayan, a 32-year-old purchase officer from Kerala, who has been living in Dubai for the past seven years, first heard about Big Ticket through social media a year ago. Since then, he has been purchasing tickets occasionally as part of a group of 10 friends. 'When Bouchra called to inform me about the win, I was so excited that I could barely speak, I just didn't know what to say! I plan to split the prize money among my group and use my share to continue purchasing Big Ticket entries. My advice to others is to give it a try, you never know when your luck might strike.' Sameer Ahmed, a 39-year-old safety officer from Hyderabad, currently living in Saudi Arabia for the past 15 years while his family remains back home, discovered Big Ticket through a promotional video on YouTube three months ago. He created an account and has been purchasing tickets on his own ever since. Sameer also took part in the ongoing bundle offer, which granted him 3 tickets. His lucky win came from the free ticket. 'To believe that my luck paid off in just three months is an indescribable feeling. I feel truly blessed, happy, and grateful to Big Ticket. With the prize money, I plan to bring my family to live with me in Saudi Arabia and pay off some existing loans. Big Ticket has brought me good fortune, so I'll definitely continue participating.' He also shared that he's forwarded his winning video to all his friends and is actively encouraging them to start taking part and try their luck. Hailing from India, Sushmita purchased two tickets and received one additional ticket free as part of the ongoing bundle offer. It was the free ticket, number 277-044870, that secured her win. She was overjoyed upon hearing the news. With three weekly e-draws already wrapped up, the final week remains before the grand prize draw takes place live in Abu Dhabi on August 3. And that night, it won't be just one winner, six additional lucky participants will each walk away with a consolation cash prize of Dh50,000.

Uber launches Senior Accounts in MENA to support older adults' mobility

Uber has introduced a new feature across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region designed to make transportation easier and more accessible for older adults. The launch of Senior Accounts and Simple Mode aims to help older people travel independently while giving their families peace of mind. Now available in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Lebanon, the feature allows family members to set up and manage rides for older relatives, even if they live in different cities or countries. Senior Accounts are part of Uber's Family Profiles and provide a streamlined version of the app with larger text, simplified navigation, and the ability for trusted family members to provide remote assistance. For users who prefer to ride on their own, Simple Mode can be activated through the app's accessibility settings, offering a user-friendly interface with fewer steps and clearer prompts. 'These features reflect the company's ongoing efforts to make the Uber app a platform that works for the entire family, from teens to seniors,' the company said. Building on the success of Teen Accounts, Uber is bridging another important gap in the mobility space. 'In the MENA region, where strong family ties and intergenerational support are a way of life, this offering will help older adults stay independent and connected, with the reassurance that loved ones are always just a tap away.' Read: The features come as mobility challenges for seniors in the region—such as limited public transport access, long distances, or extreme heat—can pose significant barriers. Senior Accounts bridge these gaps by allowing older riders to save favourite destinations, choose flexible payment options, and share trip details in real time with loved ones. Family members can also book or monitor rides remotely through the app. How it works: A family organiser creates a Family Profile and invites an older adult to join as a senior. The senior receives a text message with a link to download the app and register. Once set up, they can request rides themselves or allow a family member to manage trips on their behalf. For those not added to a Family Profile, Simple Mode remains available as an independent feature through the app's accessibility settings. Following successful launches in the US, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico, Uber's rollout in the MENA region underscores its broader strategy of building inclusive technology that meets the needs of all age groups. The company developed these features in collaboration with older riders and accessibility experts to ensure the platform works for every stage of life.
