Cinnamoroll vs Pompompurin: who's winning the 2025 Sanrio Character Ranking?

Last month's papal conclave may have drawn global attention, but elsewhere, another vote stirred near-religious fervour:
Sanrio 's annual popularity contest. Millions of fans cast ballots not for a pope, but for the crown of cutest Sanrio pup. On one side, the reigning champ for five straight years: Cinnamoroll. On the other: Pompompurin.
Online, the passion can verge on the unhinged. 'I swear to f***ing God if you troglodytes let that greedy f***ing capitalist Dog win for the seventh year in a row I am going to commit an act of resistance that is so vile,'
one user posted on X (formerly Twitter). Harsh words for an adorable pup born on a cloud, but that's the kind of fervour Sanrio characters inspire.

From April 10 to May 25, fans cast ballots for their favourites among 90 Sanrio characters in the
40th Annual Sanrio Character Ranking . For the first time, votes could be cast in Sanrio stores or Hello Kitty Cafes – complete with an 'I voted' sticker – not just online.
Fans could also head to Don Don Donki for a Hong Kong exclusive promotion, where they received a complimentary character ranking sticker and a character table flag when buying Sanrio products. The brand also held a special pop-up at Sha Tin's New Town Plaza from April 28 to March 27.
Sanrio , the Japanese entertainment company behind cultural icons such as Hello Kitty , has more than 450 characters under its name and is perhaps the biggest exporter of Japan's beloved kawaii culture
A white puppy with a quiet but friendly demeanour, Cinnamoroll was introduced in 2001 and for several years, fans mistook him for a bunny because of his long ears that double as wings. He's dominated recent contests, winning seven of the past eight years, with a consecutive first place streak between 2020 and 2024.

‘Cool' officers on Chinese aircraft carrier impress Hong Kong visitors

Naval officers on China's first domestically built aircraft carrier, the Shandong, were popular photo subjects for Hong Kong residents enjoying a rare opportunity to sing and dance with them on the second and final day of the warship's public opening on Sunday. Advertisement Visitors queued up to capture on camera the sheer scale of the 70,000-tonne carrier, with its distinctive 'ski jump' ramp, fighter jets, likely to be J-15s, and helicopters, and to seize the chance to meet and interact with officers. 'The deck was absolutely buzzing with excitement. There was a massive singalong and you could even dance with the naval officers,' said Dong Xiaoyang, a user of the Chinese social media platform RedNote. 'You got a full, close-up view of both the J-15 and J-15T jets – I heard you can't even get this close at air shows. 'And the naval officers on board were incredibly cool. They were all happy to take photos with us, which was such a rare opportunity. I seriously made sure to get a picture with almost every one of them.' A fighter jet is the backdrop for a visitor's photo with a crew member. Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan disliked this Hong Kong film director, but how good was he?

Lo Wei was one of Hong Kong's most renowned directors in the late 1960s and early 1970s, but disparagement from Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan tarnished his reputation. Advertisement Below, film historian Frank Djeng discusses how it could be time for Lo's voluminous body of work to be re-evaluated. Do you think Lo's work has been overlooked? Yes, I think it's time to reassess his accomplishments. He was one of Shaw Brothers' most prominent directors between 1964 and 1970, directing close to 20 films there. His The Golden Buddha (1966), which is a really fun James Bond-style film, was the first Shaw movie to take HK$1 million, and Lo was the first to be called a 'million-dollar director'.

Ellis Wong continues barnstorming finish to the season: ‘I love this horse'

Dancing Code and Ellis Wong (right) get up in the nick of time at Sha Tin. Photo: Kenneth Chan Apprentice jockey boots Dancing Code to victory for boss Caspar Fownes for Saturday night's Class Two Philip Chen Trophy (1,200m) at Sha Tin Apprentice jockey Ellis Wong Chi-wang continued his barnstorming finish to the season by booting Dancing Code to victory for his boss Caspar Fownes in Saturday night's Class Two Philip Chen Trophy (1,200m) at Sha Tin. Sent off the $3.55 favourite, the Aaron Kwok Fu-shing-owned Dancing Code came from forward of midfield to nail Harmony N Blessed and Lady's Choice near the line. 'I'm so happy to win for the boss again and this owner,' said Wong. 'Today, with a good barrier and the strong pace, he travelled really well for me and he tries really hard. He's a small horse but he's got a big heart. He's always fighting really hard. I love this horse.' Dancing Code darts late to grab the Class 2 Philip Chen Trophy at Sha Tin! 🏆 Owned by celebrity superstar Aaron Kwok, the 6YO speedster scoops a fourth win for Caspar Fownes and his apprentice @elliswong05... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) July 5, 2025 Wong moved to 25 winners for the season, while Derek Leung Ka-chun stayed in the hunt for the Tony Cruz Award for leading local jockey by snaring the Class Five Li Cup (1,600m) aboard Celtic Times – the jockey's 33rd success of the season and 250th victory on the Sha Tin turf. Leung trails Matthew Poon Ming-fai (36 winners) and Matthew Chadwick (34) in the race for the Tony Cruz Award. 'That's not bad,' said Leung of the mini-milestone. 'I'll do my best [to win]. I've got to catch 'The [Poon] Train' first.' Frankie Lor Fu-chuen also ticked a little box on Saturday, edging clear of David Hayes to be the most successful trainer on the dirt this season, with the win of Gimme Five in the Class Five Swaine Cup (1,200m) the handler's 10th on the surface for the term. Celtic Times dominates for Derek Leung, who rides his 250th winner on Sha Tin's turf course, while Manfred Man equals his career-best 44 wins in a season! 👏 #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) July 5, 2025 Gimme Five's win was the first leg of a double for Teetan, who also saluted aboard Ka Ying Resilience for Hayes in the Class Four Arculli Trophy (1,200m). Hayes also enjoyed a brace after snaring the Class Four Ip Jug (1,800m) with Fortune Boy, trimming John Size's lead in the trainers' premiership to seven with three meetings remaining. Hayes was pleased to see Ka Ying Resilience break through at start 11. 'We have been leading with the horse and he's looked a bit weak, so we thought we'd try and take a sit from a good barrier and hope that it would work and it really did,' said the trainer. 'I think next season we won't be leading all the time with him, especially when he draws an inside gate. I think there's a lot of upside in the horse next season. He's a good horse to follow next year.'
