20 Most Important Chargers of 2025: No. 14 DL Teair Tart

USA Today2 days ago
The Chargers are gearing up for the new season, which features a mix of new and returning faces within the organization. Several players are crucial to the team's success this season.
Every day from now until the start of training camp, we're counting down our 20 Most Important Chargers for the 2025 season. We'll recap their 2024 season, look ahead, and hit on the biggest question facing them this year.
Next up at No. 14 is defensive lineman Teair Tart.
Background
Age: 28
Position: Defensive tackle
Experience: Sixth season
2025 cap hit: $4.5 million
2024 recap
After playing with the Titans for the first four seasons of his pro career, Tart was signed right before the 2024 regular season. Appearing in all 17 games, Tart was a key cog up front as an interior pass rusher and against the run. He notched 29 tackles, a sack, five tackles for loss, an interception, and a forced fumble. Tart set career highs in Pro Football Focus overall (76.9) and run defense (70.9) grades. His PFF grade of 78.1 ranked 12th among defensive tackles who played at least 300 snaps.
2025 outlook
Tart was rewarded for his hard work with a one-year contract extension. Getting him back was important after the loss of their best interior defender from a season ago, Poona Ford. The Chargers also lost Morgan Fox, who provided an interior pass-rush presence. Los Angeles added some pieces in free agency with veterans Naquan Jones and DaShawn Hand, and in the draft with third-round pick Jamaree Caldwell. They're also hoping to get more out of Justin Eboigbe, last year's fourth-round pick. But despite the additions, the team is banking on getting the most production from Tart, who was a force last season in a rotational role.
Big question: Can Tart produce with extended snaps, and will he fill the void as an interior pass rusher?
We're counting down our 30 Most Important Chargers of 2025. Check back every day leading up to the start of training camp.

Brock Purdy still wishes the best for Trey Lance

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was an afterthought when he was drafted with the final pick in 2022. It took injuries to Trey Lance Jimmy Garoppolo before he saw the field, and after that, Lance and Garoppolo became expendable. Lance, the third overall pick in 2021, lasted through training camp in 2023 before the Cowboys unwisely sent a fourth-round pick to the 49ers for him. 'It's tough, because Trey and I are tight, dude,' Purdy said during a recent appearance on the Bussin' With The Boys podcast, via David Bonilla of 'Absolutely, we're boys, and we're bros.' Purdy is firmly entrenched as the 49ers' franchise quarterback, having signed a five-year, $265 million extension with the team. Lance already is on his third team, having left the Cowboys to sign a one-year, $2 million deal with the Chargers to back up Justin Herbert. Lance's career has not gone how anyone expected. 'I wanted nothing but the best for him, and I know he wanted that for me,' Purdy said. 'But that's just how this business goes and all that. When it did happen, we're about to play our preseason game against the Chargers, and right before the game, they announced [the trade of Lance to the Cowboys], and I didn't really know how to act or what to think. I was just like, 'Man, I hope he can go to Dallas and compete and have a great opportunity.'' Purdy said he and Lance have never discussed exactly how everything went down, but nothing has changed about Purdy's feelings about Lance. 'We've just texted each other, like, 'Hey, dude, hope you're doing good,' like, randomly throughout the season, offseason, or whatever. 'Hope you're doing good,' this and that. It's really just been that,' Purdy said. 'We haven't really gotten to the details of, 'Hey, how do you feel with this happening?' or whatever. We just stay away from that.'

'Needs to happen now': Fresh calls for premiership-winning NRL coach to quit

Titans coach Des Hasler is facing more questions over his future with claims he won't be coach of the battling club next year as Corey Parker doubles down on his comments. The Titans are sitting last on the NRL ladder after 18 rounds with just four wins for the season. Hasler was brought into the side in 2024 to turn around their fortunes, but finished 14th. The team is not doing any better this season and are once again set to miss finals footy as they battle to avoid the wooden spoon. Despite a number of injuries to the team, Hasler has a number of representative players available for selection and still hasn't been able to rally his players this season. There has also been reports the premiership-winning coach could be set to call time on his career at the end of the season. Hasler moved to shut down the speculation after his team's loss to the Eels in round 17. 'No, they're just whispers, mate. It's just rumour and innuendo," Hasler said of the speculation he is going to retire. The reports have not sat well with everyone. The speculation prompted Queensland great Parker to suggest the club should part ways with Hasler immediately if this season will be his last. And since the development, reporter Michael Carayannis has claimed Hasler won't be at the Titans in 2026. 'It'll be called a retirement but it's a mutual understanding,' Carayannis said on SEN Radio. 'The Titans can call it whatever they like but Des won't be the coach next season. It's been an absolute failure.' Earlier in the season, reports emerged the Titans have the option in Hasler's contract to part ways with the coach if the club don't make the top eight. And Carayannis claimed the club could move on this clause with the Titans facing a brutal run to make finals footy. 'He originally signed a three-year deal but there's clauses in his deal and one of those is a top eight clause,' Carayannis added. 'That is if they don't make the top eight this year, the Titans are under no obligation to keep him at the club next year. "There's another element to it and that's when they are mathematically no chance of playing finals footy, they can split immediately.' The Titans would have to win the large majority of their remaining nine games to play finals footy in 2025. RELATED: NSW ditch pre-match tradition in stunning move for Origin 3 Broncos cop double blow as two players sidelined for weeks Parker again addressed the Hasler reports after Carayannis' update and doubled down on his suggestion the club should act immediately. Parker feels the Titans would be better off moving on if the coach has one-eye on retirement. 'Only two people would know he is going to retire – Des and the owners,' Parker said on SENQ Breakfast. 'If that's the case, there is no upside to him sticking around for the remaining part of the year. Whether he wants to get to 500 games I don't know but if he wants to retire it needs to happen now. There is no upside (to staying)." Hasler won two premierships during his time as the Manly Sea Eagles coach. He also reached the finals with the Bulldogs in 2012 and 2014.

Marcus Freeman listed among top 10 college football head coaches

The Fighting Irish coach is in good company Pro Football Focus has named Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman to its top 10 of college football coaches. Freeman is listed fifth, behind Georgia's Kirby Smart, Ohio State's Ryan Day, Clemson's Dabo Swinney and Oregon's Dan Lanning. Freeman is ahead of Steve Sarkisian (Texas), Kalen DeBoer (Alabama), James Franklin (Penn State), former Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly (LSU) and Curt Cignetti (Indiana). Although Freeman's first two seasons as the head man at Notre Dame were marred with some inexplicable upsets, his third season saw the Fighting Irish get all the way to the national championship game, despite another hard-to-explain loss at home versus Northern Illinois. Even though the Irish lost to Ohio State in the national title game, getting to the championship and following that up with strong recruiting efforts have helped Freeman raise his -- and his program's -- profile.
